Well, I waited until the last possible second, but here it finally is: my liveblog of MBS episode 2, Catching a Bird!

No I don’t have anything to say, that’s just a really good line.

I still prefer “Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened” because I think it flows a bit better, but changing it isn’t really a big deal.

I will say this- I do wish they had Constance ask that question, like in the books, because her apology afterward was a huge moment for her early characterization. That said, it does seem like they’re taking her character arc more slowly than the book did, so maybe we’ll get some moments like this with her later on.

the institute is a LOT bigger than I pictured as a kid WOW

Hm, these two are a lot more eerie than threatening in this version. In fact, that seems to be a theme with the Institute. I guess they’re trying to be subtle- although their initials backwards are still EVIL, so...

I love that they’re really emphasizing the book’s message that there isn’t just one kind of intelligence! Kate may not have a photographic memory, genius puzzle solving skills, or a knack for composing insulting poetry, but that doesn’t make her any less smart than the others!

Yeah, that’s a bit disappointing, but I won’t assume that they’ve “ruined his character” based on a few seconds of screentime. Plus, if they’re trying to avoid harmful stereotypes, good on them. 

And he goes by Dr Curtain! I did wonder why he went by Mr in the book, he certainly seems the type to flaunt his credentials.

Okay! So that was Carrying a Bird. I give this episode an 8/10. Not as strong as the pilot, but to be fair, this was mostly a transition episode. Now that they’re actually at the Institute, the plot can really get going!
