The TV in my room hasn't worked, I tried getting a free trial on hulu but I don't have US bank account, and the wiki hasn't spoiled anything on what happened

The one saving grace is the Apple TV box that hasn't been for family movie nights in a year or two. And I ain't waiting for her to come back home to know were that box is, because it ain't in her room.

I saw you reblogged the random asks post yesterday, so here you go! If you feel like talking about it, how did you first get into MBS? (i.e. hearing about it, getting involved in the fandom, whatever you want!)

Oooh! Okay so I first read the book when I was ten years old, because my father bought it for me and he thought I might like it. I didn't touch it for a while because I wanted to choose my own books, Dad! And thought I was too cool for it. And then my 5th grade reading teacher recommended the book, and I realized, oh, I have that at home, and read it. More than read, really, I devoured that thing. I have a perfect memory of promising myself I would shower after I finished the current chapter I was on, and in that chapter Curtain stood up and I was so shook but I held to my promise and took the quickest shower in the world so I could return to my book and find out what happened. I also was there when The Prisoner's Dilemma was a hardback, and paperback copies had not yet been made. Same for Extraordinary Education.

Then, I heard about the TV adaptation sometime around when I was...uh...19? 20? Maybe? This was before Disney+ was a thing and everyone thought it was going to be on Hulu.

Life moved on for a time, and then my aunt casually said she had been recommended a show on Disney+ based on a children's series, and had I ever heard of The Mysterious Benedict Society?

Record scratch. World shattered. What, pardon my French, the fuck?!

Suffice to say I watched as much of the show as I physically could a sitting before I had to move around a bit. I started watching when probably episode...7? Was out so I never had to wait for the end of the first season. The second was another matter, and I had to ensure I watched it on my own before my family because they might not be interested in the show the night it aired but I very much was.

The rest, as they say, is history. Here I am, slowly but surely getting used to participating in fandom outside lurking again, and wow it's a world of fun.

A Beginning at the End...

I made a post the other day about MBS getting cancelled and honestly that was just a quick vent post and didn't have much of my actual thoughts and feelings about what why I was so upset. So I want to tell a story about my history with the book and later adaptation, just so I can give it a bit of a sendoff and celebrate my love for the series as a whole.

To begin, I believe I'm neurodivergent in some way (undiagnosed for reasons I won't get into), so you can imagine that I wasn't very welcomed by many of my classmates. While it was a small class and I was close with them, I didn't feel that they really understood me. I often felt alone and found my home in books, as cliche as that sounds.

On a Friday in elementary school, a book on my teacher's shelf called The Mysterious Benedict Society caught my eye. I pulled it out and asked her if I could borrow it. She hesitated a bit before saying yes, as long as I promised to take care of it as it was a very special book to her. I, of course, agreed, not knowing how special it would become to me too.

I immediately began reading and fell in love with the world of the novel, finishing it within a weekend. I loved how clever Reynie was at solving the puzzles he was given, how Sticky rattled off facts like a machine, Kate's positivity and agility (I wanted to be her sooooo badly), and Constance's stubborn nature. And of course, the world-building, themes, and overall plot were superb.

But most of all, it was the kid characters I loved, because I felt they were like me in some way (the neurodivergent coding makes a lot of sense now!!), that if I knew them in real life they would be friends with me. And this only increased when I read the rest of the series. The only unfortunate part is that almost everyone I knew had never heard of these books, let alone read them. The few who actually did I didn't get to stay in touch with due to outside circumstances.

Over the years, I've reread the series several times and I still can't get over just how GOOD this book series is. First off, they're funny. There are so many good moments where I STILL laugh, no matter how many times I've read them. The characters are well-thought out and the main four kids are dynamic characters; they each have a realistic and clear arc over the course of each book (which I hope to make a post about someday!). Book Curtain is a bit of a cartoon villain I'll admit, but his funny moments add to the charm and is still a credible threat as a villain. The themes are interesting, and understandable for kids while being even more hard-hitting for adults. The plot structures are fun and while a bit predictable definitely keep you on your toes.

So in 2019, when I found out that the fourth book, The Riddle of Ages, was releasing I was SO excited and of course bought a copy as soon as I could. It was really emotional for me, as it showed the characters aged up and coming to terms with growing up and what that could mean for their friendship. I needed it, especially with the transitional period I was going through at the time.

Around that time, another bombshell dropped: it was actually getting a TV show adaptation (on Hulu at the time)!!! This was a dream come true for me, who had imagined it so many times (and had actually wanted to play Kate lol). I was a bit wary of what they would do with the characters, but honestly I was just happy it was getting an adaptation at all. That at least some people knew about it and wanted to see it come to life.

When it finally came out on Disney Plus, I watched it every week like clockwork. I loved both seasons and how much detail they put into it. While the show changed a lot of things from the book series, I actually loved what they did with it. Kate's arc of not wanting to be a team player is even more prominent from the beginning, Show Curtain, SQ being Curtain's adopted son, I could go on, but those are just *chef's kiss* 👌👌. More than that I could just feel the LOVE that went into the show from the actors, writers...just everyone!! Even the choices I didn't like still worked for me just because I could tell how much care was put into the series. The community on here shared the love even more through posts, fanfiction, art, etc. Finally I felt like I had validation for the series I loved so much and that people were seeing how great it was!

Then I found out it wasn't being renewed for a third season... and it hurt a lot. I felt (and still feel) that it's just another example of a streaming site looking over the quality of the show for pure numbers. What has helped is the MBS blogs I follow/lurk around (shoutout to y'all <3 I know I need to engage more) and the actors of the kid characters, who have all spoken out about how they're sad it's ended but also enjoyed the journey and love the time they had with getting to play the characters, which cheered me up a lot.

So in the end, I'm still upset the show was cancelled. And I'm still holding out hope that maybe it'll get renewed somehow, or picked up by another studio. But no matter what, it'll never take away the love I have for the book and TV series and the community surrounding it, so I'm glad I'll always be able to celebrate that.

TL:DR: I have a lot of history with the original book series and while I'm still sad about the show ending, the love I have for the MBS series as a whole and the community surrounding it won't go away. I'm happy there was an adaptation that got so much love from everyone involved and that people got to enjoy it.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts - Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) takes over the directing duties from Michael Bay in this Transformers film based on the Beast Wars storyline. The film is set prior to the Bay films in 1994 and stars humans like Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback alongside the Autobots, Maximals, and Terrorcons.

Flamin’ Hot - Eva Longoria directs this biographical comedy-drama about the origins of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos for Hulu.

June 16th

The Flash - The Scarlet Speedster races onto movie screens with his first feature film and brings along Supergirl, General Zod, and a par of Batmen. The big selling point for the film, loosely based on the Flashpoint storyline, is the return of Michael Keaton to the cape and cowl 21 years after Batman Returns.

Elemental - Pixar is back with the story of a fire element, Ember, and a water element, Ripple, who meet and fall in love in a world filled with the elements of nature.

June 23rd

Asteroid City - After a limited release the prior week, Wes Anderson’s newest film will be released wide on June 23rd. Along for the ride with Anderson are Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, and another dozen or so actors and actresses that we don’t have room to mention.

No Hard Feelings - Jennifer Lawerence stars in this hard-R coming-of-age sex comedy (a genre rarely seen in theaters anymore). Andrew Barth Feldman, Matthew Broderick, Laura Benanti, and Natalie Morales co-star.

June 30th

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - Harrison Ford is back on Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. in this fifth installment of the Indiana Jones series. James Mangold takes over directing duties from Steven Spielberg in what billed to be Ford’s last outing on the adventure-find professor of archeology. 

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken - From Dreamworks animation comes this new fantasy action-film that feels part Luca and part Onward.

Now for a quick look ahead to July, my top picks for next month are Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One and Oppenheimer.

第２回ファイナリスト作品１組目・てつおとゆうほ監督『ヒロインの親友はハードスケジュール！！』主演に注目の若手俳優・田鍋梨々花、生徒たちを見守る先生役に山崎静代が決定！

オンライン動画配信サービス「Hulu」を運営するHJホールディングス株式会社が主催する、35歳以下を対象とした新世代の映像クリエイター発掘&育成プロジェクト「Hulu U35クリエイターズ・チャレンジ（通称：HU(エイチユー)35）」。5組のファイナリストたちがグランプリを競う作品の1組目のキャストが発表となりました！

昨年9月27日に実施された「ファイナリスト選考会」での選考後、映像制作のプロのサポートを受け、約３ヶ月に渡り、脚本づくりと制作準備を進めてきた5組のファイナリストたち。自らが監督・脚本を務め、Huluで配信する「映像作品」を完成させるため、トップバッターとしてクランクインしたのは『ヒロインの親友はハードスケジュール！！』のてつおとゆうほ組。HU35初のコンビ・ファイナリストであるてつおとゆうほ監督が描くのは《ヒロイン…ではなくヒロインの恋を応援ばかりしている自称“プロフェッショナル親友”が主人公の新感覚ラブコメ》。てつおとゆうほ監督はこの作品を作り上げるのに際し、「胸キュン映画のメタ的な要素を用いた今作は、胸キュン映画あるあるを多用して、観ている視聴者に飽きさせないための展開や工夫を施しました」と話します。

◎監督・脚本◎てつおとゆうほ

胸キュン映画のメタ的な要素を用いた今作は、胸キュン映画あるあるを多用して、観ている視聴者の人に飽きさせないための展開や工夫を施しました。俳優さんの表情が絶妙で、かなりシュールでニヤニヤしながら撮影していました笑

特に、キャラの強いヒロインたちに巻き込まれる幸子の表情がめちゃくちゃ可愛くて、めちゃくちゃ面白いので、楽しみにしてもらえたら嬉しいです。

 ◎脇田幸子役◎田鍋梨々花

今回、35才以下のクリエイターを応援するHU35という企画で、グランプリを目指す皆さんの作品に携われてとても嬉しいです。てつお監督とゆうほ監督はお芝居をしやすい環境を作ってくださいましたし、カップル監督ならではの男の子目線、女の子目線、どちらの意見も聞けて、すごく貴重な現場に参加させていただけたなと思いました！この作品は、恋愛ドラマのヒロインの隣に必ずいる親友役にフィーチャーしている、とても新鮮な設定なので、そんな脇役のはずの彼女の恋に向き合う姿を応援しながら楽しんでいただきたいです。

 ◎達也役◎本田響矢

ヒロインの親友に着目して、ここまで深く描いた作品を観たことがなかったので、新しい発見があり読んでいてとても面白かったです。僕が演じた達也という役柄の繊細な性格や人柄も、現場でも監督と話し合いながら作り上げていきました。2人組の監督さんとご一緒する経験は初めてでしたが、てつお監督、ゆうほ監督にそれぞれの考えや想いがあって、そこに僕の考える役の想いを混ぜて、みんなで作り上げていく感覚が楽しかったです。

 ◎ともか役◎若柳琴子

今回このHU35という企画でお二人の大切な作品に出演できて嬉しかったです。現場では、監督のお二人はもちろん、他のスタッフさんや共演者の皆さんも本当に優しくて、5日間という短い期間でしたが楽しく撮影することができました。ともかの動きや喋り方を見てリハの時から監督お二人が笑ってくれたことが何より嬉しかったです。この作品は今までに観たことがないラブコメディなので、絶対に面白いです！みんなで一生懸命作った作品なので、ぜひご覧ください。

監督との年齢が非常に近く、イメージの共有や監督とのコミュニケーションも含めて新鮮な気持ちで撮影が進んでいき、とても楽しかったです。監督のお二人含め、スタッフさん、共演者の皆さんがすごく優しく、その優しい人柄が滲み出るような現場でした。演出ではお二人で真剣に話し合い、胸キュンシーンなどは監督自身が再現してくださったことが印象的でした。笑いあり、胸キュンありの今までにないラブコメ作品となっています。ぜひご覧ください！

今回この作品のオーディションを受けさせていただくにあたってHU35という企画を調べていく中で、15歳(※)の現役高校生も監督としてファイナリストに残っていることを知り、チャレンジするのに年齢は関係ないんだと改めて感じました。そんな素晴らしい企画の作品に自分も携わらせていただきすごく光栄です。役を演じる中で、少し躓いたり難しいなと感じて監督に相談しに行くと、お二人が一緒に親身になってご指導してくださったことがすごく嬉しかったです。ラブコメ好きのお二人による作品ということで、ラブコメ好きな方には絶対に刺さる作品になると思いますし、一人でも多くの方がこの作品を観て、笑ったりキュンキュンしたりしてもらえたらいいなと思いますのでぜひ皆さん楽しみにしてください。

今回この脚本を読んで、脇役にスポットを当てるなんてすごい発想だなと感心しました。ヒロインの親友＝脇役と聞くと最初はパッとしない子が主���なのかなと思いますけど、田鍋（梨々花）さんが可愛らしく演じていて、ヒロインとしても成立しているのですごいと思います。監督お二人は若くて小柄で控えめな感じの印象だったのですが、おもしろい発想をされていたので、内に秘めるエネルギーが二人にはあるんだなと感じました。カップルでの制作は同じ方向性が見えていないと難しいかと思いますが、完成がとても楽しみです。
