It was really a fun exploration (our Visual Development team also did many awesome versions) to try to find this more extreme look for Thor for THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER. Every design decision was hinged on the fact that he didn’t want to get upstaged by this new Thor that has come onto the scene. “You ARE the Scarlet Witch!” OK here it is! The approved concept design I did for the finale of WandaVision! If you follow me you know that I’ve done a lot of designs of her through the years on the past MCU films. Those were fun. But none of that compared to working on THIS! I was finally given permission to go full on Scarlet Witch comic book costume AND do a crown yay!! What a dream! And then seeing the crown come alive by our 3D maestro @adamwross & then the mastery of costume designer @mayesrubeo & @ironhead_studio making the suit a reality was nothing but pure pleasure. And Elizabeth Olsen... what a star! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the great vfx work done by vfx supervisor Tara Demarco & her crew of vfx artisans. And lastly of course our fearless (& amazing!) leadership in director Matt Shakman, head writer Jac Schaefer, producer @marenocares & of course the top leaders of Marvel Studios in Kevin Feige, Lou D’Esposito & Victoria Alonso. Designing the Scarlet Witch CROWN: I was of course 1st referencing the source material being the comic book origins from her original creation by Jack Kirby & Stan Lee. Then I looked at all the different ways she was drawn by incredible artists through the decades from John Byrne, Alan Davis, Olivier Coipel, & Kevin Wada, just to name a few notable ones. Then I started playing with shapes- big, overall silhouettes to the more internal details. I did a ton of variations that I’ll show eventually. But the one that was approved that you saw in the show was 1st inspired by the more bejeweled look @kevinwada did in the comics. It was mainly the use of negative spaces that inspired me to explore those kinds of options. The swirling internal shapes were inspired by her magical hex shapes & the movement she makes with her fingers when conjuring those powers. It was all a very fun exploration & a joy to create under the leadership of our director Matt Shakman & the leadership of Marvel Studios. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After I got the approved design I handed it off to our master 3D modeler @adamwross He created the actual form on top of Elizabeth Olsen’s head scan & then it went to the talented specialty costume creators at @ironhead_studio to make it in reality. Them along with our brilliant costume designer @mayesrubeo made her suit come to life in a way that was simply breathtaking! Definitely one of the most fun times I’ve had leading the Vis Dev department at Marvel Studios was working on Thor: Ragnarok! We were asked to design a TON of alien gladiators for the Grandmaster’s Contest of Champions. These were the approved design picks by @taikawaititi .
