About the wiki thing: what is so bad about using a similar translation to the wiki ones?

The Jp original has a meaning and the wiki just translates it. Why does EnSekai hate having similar translations? The meaning won't change regardless of them being in the wiki or not.

I’m pretty sure it’s because they are not meant to use the wiki and are trying to not get caught in the act. This started with the Phoenix event. If you look at nguc and events before then, there are many instances where card and event names would end up translated exactly the same or very similar, because if that was the best localisation then yeah ofc it’s gonna end up the same. I understand sometimes the wiki TLs are pretty stiff or otherwise could do with some better localisation into English but it’s annoyingly obvious that they’re just using a thesaurus (figuratively or maybe literally) on the wiki names to the point it’s kinda ridiculous.

I won’t argue that some of their names are better than the wiki, because they are, but once they accidentally put wiki stuff on stream back in February it suddenly became very apparent that they started using those names as placeholders and basing their own “translations” off of them. Take Honami’s wedding card as a good example, the wiki called it Under the Bells of Gratitude and Blessings, ensekai called it A Bell of Gratitude and Blessing. They were right to make it singular on the bell but there was literally no reason to remove the preposition? Until you consider that they would’ve ended up with an identical TL to the wiki and it’s kinda obvious what went on behind the scenes. Also just look at the card and event names since Phoenix next to the fan TLs and it suddenly becomes very apparent.

just to be spicy for one second i find it very odd when people see L as 100% white bc visually he’s probably got the most stereotypical asian qualities out of literally anyone in this entire series — like, straight black hair, eyes so dark you can’t see his irises & also arguably the general shape of his eyes. if you take htr13 as canon, he’s officially half mixed japanese. his chosen name is japanese, he is constantly eating traditional japanese snacks, his proxy has a japanese name. obata has an extremely distinct way of drawing white characters and he does not do this for L.

like it really seems to me that the main thing convincing people he’s white is that lived in england & i would gently like to remind everyone that this is not an ethnicity and that there are many, many asian people who live there. he’s a heavily styled comic character and therefore ethnically ambiguous so i wouldn’t go so far as to say this is whitewashing or anything like that but i do think it’s maybe worth taking a step back and reflecting on what it is about this character that cues as white u know.

One thing i wish more people would consider when watching shows/reading comics is "if the narrative doesn't treat this seriously, then maybe neither should I"... Obviously there's some nuance to it, but people forget about slapstick and asides to the audience and if I have to see one more person in the year of 2024 claim that "Winry is abusive" for lighthearted wrench visual gags I'm going to lose my mind.

I understand wanting things to be resolved right away but like it or not if you’ve been friends with someone for years and it’s revealed they’re a terrible person you’re going to need some time to process that and come to terms with it before you can make any sort of statement. please don't use the safeutdr tag for callouts

posting this publicly since this has come up before and may come up again and i really personally can't deal with it every time this happens. there are a few reasons why this just really isn't a great idea.

first of all posting about these people in the safeutdr tag only will bring their attention to the tag. the tag operates on an honor system the way it remains something we can use is because it doesn't interest people who will post things against the rules. if you are calling them out by name and posting repeatedly about them, there will be interest, they will be pay attention, etc. the tag literally won't be able to serve its purpose anymore.

second if i am (for example) triggered by incest shipping and trying to use the safeutdr tag to avoid seeing or hearing about incest shipping, the first post being a giant callout about how someone ships incest is frankly going to make me stop using the tag. people who want to avoid these subjects won't use the tag anymore. the tag won't be able to serve its purpose anymore.

i am not saying you cannot make warning posts ever but this tag is not the place to do it. please, if you want people to still use the tag as it was originally intended, don't post callouts in the tag. thank you.
