@kacchand (i couldn't tag your main but i wanted to make sure you saw this fdlkjfdlkj)
hello dear! i’m sorry it took me so long to respond to this dflskjfdlkfdj i decided to answer your ask in a text post so i can link my thoughts to yours more easily! also, i know i'm going to Ramble, so i wanted to be able to keep it under a cut sdlkfjd
Hi rowan!! I've just finished the final chapter of aot and I just wanted to ask your opinion on it!
(SPOILERS THAT DEPICT MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE STORY'S MEANING AHEAD. READ ONLY IF YOU'VE FINISHED THE CHAPTER)
(FR )
(THERE'S STILL TIME TO BACK OUT)
(DO IT NOW. SPOILER ALERT)
I'd also like to ask a follow up question about it, because it seems that I've come to a different concl. from many of my friends and I'm feeling dumb abt how i feel w it.
first of all (and i say this as sincerely as possible, and if i'm coming off as condesending please let me know hh), please don't feel dumb because you've come to a different conclusion :(
we all read media at different levels (i’ve been told it’s ‘not that deep’ before fdljkfsdlkj) and identify different aspects in it, so the fact that you've had a different experience to some of your friends is absolutely not a reflection on your intelligence. and if anyone's making you feel that way, drop their @. i just want to talk :) furthermore, you’re not wrong for responding to something emotionally, especially if it really... makes you uncomfortable, you know?
i'm from the PH & I've put off determining whether i'm comfy w the manga til the last chap,,,, but is it wrong that I can't shake the feeling that it's a justification of japanese expansionism and genocide? ik this manga has always been in the grey area, and that's what I love abt it! It often shows that no choice they make is absolutely good or bad, and does such a good job at showing you how each complex character came to that understanding (role of environment, etc...) but this last chapter felt too positive abt the rumbling? Like it was justified because paradis was able to advance and there wasn't much choice? idk.
that's totally valid! some of the best think pieces on the show i read mentioned that the concern with the narrative is less "is isayama a nazi sympathiser?" (he most likely isn't), but if he's a imperial japan apologist. and...
well, let's just say that my father is british, and when i was trying to say that colonisation was bad, using british india as an example, he said "well, we gave them railroads." it's... it's uncomfortable and gross and i think it encapsulates how countries with imperial pasts tend to talk about them; even if they don't officially endorse it, there's often a lot of talk about how "well colonialism was good for this country, actually--"
and if the manga felt like it was justifying japanese expansionism, then chances are it had elements that very much did point towards that. i've had a lot of trouble grappling with reiner, annie and bertolt, because they've existed in this grey area of 'victim of oppression' and 'war criminal'; and their existence raises the question of "do people who commit war crimes simply do what needs to be done?" and by victimising them it... it plays into the whole nuremberg defense of "i was just following orders". it's making you feel bad for the people committing said war crimes (and similarly with eren, and all the awful things he's done). but i'll get more into this point later dsfkjfd
i haven't read the last chapter yet (and don't worry about spoilers! i've been approaching aot from a very... specific perspective anyway, so i actually don't mind spoilers -- i read a bunch of analyses of the series before i'd even watched it hh), but... i think if it came off as too positive about, you know... an awful thing that happened, then it absolutely makes sense that you'd feel uncomfortable?
the modernisation narrative in general is one that always skeeves me out. it's one japanese imperialists use to justify the invasion of korea (and even those infamous tweets from the one account purported to be isayama talk about how the population of korea boomed under japanese imperial occupation, which... stop.)
it's also commonly invoked in cases of development. certain members of society (usually the poor), just 'had' to die for the good of the future. who gives a damn if they consent to that? they have to.
similarly, the 'we had no choice' narrative. that's... a concerning one that crops up time and again with history apologists, the argument that "oh if x country hadn't done y, then someone else would've!" or that acts of aggression were done as pre-emptive self-defence, which is so... ugh. i just. i just hate it.
It also feels really weird w the ymir and the whole loving fritz thing. i wish we got to see more of her thought process and what conclusion she came to that led her to destroying the power of the titans.
i... hate this so much. i get that abuse is complicated and victims often have multifaceted feelings towards their abusers, but... most people would focus on that in their story? the story would be about that? but instead, it's just... a thing in the history of the world and that's... icky.
also having the genesis of the titans come from a slave girl in love with her captor... there's many levels of ick to it and i highly doubt it was handled with the appropriate level of grace and sensitivity.
honestly, this might be one of the things that pissed me off the most because of how... contradictory her backstory was with That One Chapter (you know, instead of ymir crying because she wants to be free or because she’s been trapped she........ wants to see mikasa kiss eren’s decapitated head? i guess? what the fuck?)
idk...I just think that context is sometimes everything. and i understand that media can portray incorrect things,,,, and that isayama likely didn't intend for it to become a global sensation, but i guess i'm just uncomfortable w the right wing nazis getting a comfort book ahaha.
i totally get that! even if attack on titan is meant to be anti-fascists, the fact of the matter is... a lot of fascists love it. and relate to it. which is... alarming. especially given just how popular aot is worldwide.
it’s hard because before the ending, attack on titan did feel like it was more grey; i remember saying that i wouldn’t know how to feel about it until the ending because the story was either saying “the military is corrupt and war is hell”, or it was saying “the military is corrupt and war is hell, but it is necessary.”
still sorting out my thoughts, but yeah. I think i'm having a hard time understanding what they really accomplished with the rumbling and how they gave eren a sudden lelouch role and a lot of how they made it out to be a happy thing? perhaps I'm too biased to see it fully but to me it gives a "woah. eren was a hero. he saved us from destruction. those people needed to die for us to achieve this temporary peace and new start". i suppose the rumbling gave them a levelled playing ground?
OH MY GOOOOOD okay. i haven't finished code geass. but i really don't like lelouch. i mean... i think i just don't like characters that sacrifice other people for a purported 'greater good' (i could write an Essay about how much i hate erwin smith looking at him is enough to send me into an unhinged rage), but where i'm up to in the anime, i don't like the direction they're going with eren? i mean, i've never liked eren, but... that whole "martyr for the eldians" is just. ew. especially when you see several eldian characters disagree and resist him.
why does this one guy get to make choices for everyone else? because he’s sPeCiAL? fuck off
sorry for not being coherent. maybe i'm basing this too much on feelings ahaha. trust aot to finish it's scandalous run with a scandalous end.
no omg you're being perfectly coherent :( also, if anyone's making you feel bad or stupid for how you experience media, they’re... definitely not as smart as they think they are fdslskjfdlk.
i'm of that mind that, while media consumption is in part an intellectual exercise, it is inherently very emotional; narrative media tries to make us feel as much as it makes us think. that’s what stories are for, you know? intellectual analysis is well and good but what’s the point of a story if it doesn’t make you feel anything?
that's to say, i don't believe there's such thing as basing your opinion too much on feelings :') especially since it's your personal experience with a piece of media; you don't owe anyone 'objectivity' (which is always a farce when it comes to this sort of thing) or 'logical analysis', because nobody's got any right to criticise you for engaging with media the 'wrong way'.
tl;dr I feel like the mood was too celebratory abt the rumbling, and didn't entail enough on the tragedy so much that it felt like a justification for genocide and expansionism. how do you feel abt it's ending and the message it leaves? is isayama responsible to give a morally correct answer to the cycle of hatred? you're not obligated to answer! and sorry for the rambling.
hhh yeah i guess that’s the thing at the end of the day... is isayama responsible for giving a “morally correct” answer? no, but the way the ending plays out is very telling.
like armin thanking eren? mikasa’s e n t i r e character boiling down to being in love with a mass murderer no matter how poorly he’s treated her? and one could argue that kind of ending is supposed to be unsettling, supposed to hint that the cycle will just continue, but...
framing is everything. and it’s framed like a Good, Emotional Thing, Aren’t We So Grateful Eren Did All Those Awful Things
YI think I would've been fine if we got to see more of Eren's or Yif you have a different perspective on how eren is being portrayed please do share! I just felt really yucky watching armin say "thanks for murdering all those people for us" with love,,, I suppose he was trying to make eren feel better. ach maybe I'm just overreacting. idk. im dumb ahaha . i'll send this in anyway cuz I'd love to hear your take!
HHHHHHH i just hate eren and i never got him. i felt bad for him in the beginning, but he's always been too... violent for me. there was a very short period of time in season 2 where i felt bad for him, but otherwise it’s just been... ugh. the main three have always been the weakest part of the series imo, so it’s really not surprising they’re part of the reason the ending was so. bad.
and... well, that one infamous quote pretty much sums up my issue with armin. he's supposed to be the 'intelligent' one, but he's hopelessly devoted to a homicidal maniac with whom he has a very artificial, unbelievable bond with.
at the end of the day, the "thank you for becoming our monster" thing just makes it seem like attack on titan's core message is "war is horrible, but it is necessary." it feels like it's justifying massacre. and while fiction is fiction, and sometimes it's as simple as that, i think something as politically loaded as attack on titan needs to be looked at with a critical lens when discussing what it’s trying to say or what it means.
do i think it makes someone a Bad Person for liking aot or being attached to it in some way? no, because that’s dumb, and what media someone likes =/= their Moral Goodness TM. ofc trends are a thing and certain pieces of media appeal to certain types of people, but it’s a false equivalency that misses the point.
but by that same breath, nobody is wrong or stupid or has Less Valid Opinions just because what they took away from it makes them uncomfortable.
i’m sorry this is So Long i have so many thoughts about this dskljfslkj
but at the end of the day,

So I finished reading Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality
This isn’t so much a review, as an attempt to cement some of my thoughts, and to at least write something down, the better that I will not look back in a year and not be able to remember a thing of what I thought of HPMOR. But overall... that was quite a thing.
HPMOR is long. Longer (by word count, which isn’t a perfect method of judging this) than War and Peace, the normal benchmark for “really long books”. I don’t consider getting through it to be an accomplishment, in the sense of say, getting through Homestuck, though maybe that’s only because I have tried, and failed to do the latter several times. It may also be because the plot is, for all it’s time travel and scientific tangents, less complex than Homestuck. I do not expect it to stick in my mind the way the canonical books do. While I do not consider them to be high literature, the canonical Harry Potter books, in addition to being entirely an entirely decent story, had a certain... Depth, of sorts, to them. Some of this may come from the midi-chlorian effect; the workings of magic are never discussed greatly in the canonical books, but much of HPMOR Harry’s efforts are devoted to understanding magic from a scientific perspective. I think it is more likely that it is because HPMOR simply had a more limited scope.
HPMOR set out to be a puzzle, an encouragement of rational thought patterns, a demonstration of how they might be applied to great benefit. And it does this. While potential plot holes and inconsistencies exist, it does this fairly well on the whole. But there isn’t that much beneath it, at least not that I have seen. It’s a good enough story, and the way it chooses to fill in the unfinished coloring book of Rowling’s world creates a compellingly interesting universe, albeit not a pleasant one. It has some good humor at some parts (more on that later), many clever moments, and some moments that are, frankly, just plain awesome, though these often contribute to the monstrously overpowered being that Harry is. Both versions shared the core theme of (spoiler warning: the rest of this paragraph. If you’re interested, I’d really advise you to just read it so that you don’t have the dramatic tension reduced) Harry ultimately triumphing by virtue of who he is. Triumphing by being, as we would describe it, a better human being than his opponent. The difference is that in the canonical books, this is a much more theological process. By the final book, Rowling is pretty much bashing us over the head with a crucifix. I still maintain that, unless the hill you wish to die on is unmarried teen snogging, declaring Harry Potter as heresy for the simple fact that it includes magic is to foolishly ignore the veritable flood of Christian messaging the books contain. I thought I’d made a post about that, but apparently not, so I’ll divert myself to that briefly.
Spoilers for the whole canonical Harry Potter main series in the following paragraph:
The entire story is based on an innocent child who was permitted to live because of the intensely real power and protection offered by the selfless sacrifice of another to protect said child. So there, straight off the bat, right in the premise. And then in the 7th book, Harry does the exact same thing, but more so, and pretty much pulls an Aslan, “dying” willingly to protect others, but not by this being truly killed. And it’s not like the Christian messaging in Narnia is obscure. And at the end of the first Harry Potter book, Dumbledore, the most “good guy” character that the series has to offer goes off explaining how “to the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure”. Then, in no particular order, having not done anything like a read through specifically looking out for these: the primacy of the soul over the physical, the specifically soul-corrupting nature of evil and killing, the power of redemption and forgiveness, the ultimate triumph of good over evil, the concept of powers that, while attainable, will damage your soul forever, and the existence of life after death. Anyway, back to the main matter.
HPMOR lacks any semblance of this depth (not that this is the deepest thing in the world mind), at least that I have been able to detect, and this makes it a lesser story to me.
The first ten or so chapters of HPMOR were pretty great as comedy. Harry constantly befuddling the wizarding world, and being befuddled by it, makes for some great laughs. Later on it undergoes a pretty significant tone change, and I had a very hard time adjusting to it, and enjoying the latter portion (which makes up most of the fic) for what it is. I did ultimately reach that point, but it was jarring.
This fic has some pretty obscure references. Have any of y’all read “Negima!?”? The author of this fic has. ( or at least, he’s watched some of the show.) It also had an offhanded reference to Madoka Magica, which is less obscure, but I still appreciate it.
HPMOR Harry just keeps on getting more and more powers. (potential spoilers ahead, less severe): It seems like every month he’s making some discovery of how to do something that the entire wizarding world “knows” is totally impossible. It makes a certain sense, in context, but it certainly does contribute to some Mary Sue-like feeling. But on the other hand, Harry routinely oversteps his cleverness, failing to think things through enough, missing obvious points that would have counter-indicated his action. And some of the consequences are rather severe, so I don’t knock too many points off for it. Harry is powerful, but he is also rather a child genius in this telling, and all things considered, most of his discoveries don’t seem too ridiculous.
I earlier mentioned that the world HPMOR painted was rather interesting. It (mostly) doesn’t directly contradict the wizarding world as portrayed in the common, but it does color in many of the blanks, and this author paints in dark colors. Wizarding britain, as portrayed in HPMOR, would be considered barbaric to most of the people reading this. Or perhaps it would merely be considered “medieval”. It certainly has some things going for it. It is portrayed as a place with relatively little history of institutional sexism, or racism amongst wizards. Even the stodgiest pure bloods find it silly to discriminate based on skin color. Wizarding Britain sees little wrong with homosexuality, and it is entirely un-taboo. But things get worse from there.
It is implied, or at least, I took away the message from my last reading some years ago, that the Wizarding power structure in the canonical books is... incompetent. That the benchmark of being a “fully qualified” witch or wizard does not in fact entail very much true competency, and many of the more powerful figures are somewhat dumb. HPMOR confirms this, and brings it into the light, offering more examples of just how useless most wizards are in matters non-magical. Wizarding Britain is controlled by an incompetent government, which is primarily controlled by one or several “Noble and Most Ancient House(s)”. The extent of Lucius Malfoy’s influence is brought up often in the canonical books, and the same is true here. This is a world where (minor spoiler for something before chapter 10-ish) a young noble raping a girl, and yes, girl is the proper noun here, repeatedly, and getting away with it indefinitely, is an open secret. Where this young noble’s security is secured by: a) the victim and her families’ fear of his familial power, b) memory charms, and c) a court system where the interests of the Noble Houses are often a primary concern.
Wizarding news is minimal, and it seems to primarily toe the ministry (which is to say, aristocratic) line, save for the Quibbler, which... on the whole, isn’t great news either. There is no particular concept of a fair trial at play in this world, especially if your crime was committed against a noble house. Less than three days investigation is considered enough to go from crime to a sentence of ten years in Azkaban. And then there’s Azkaban itself. For all it is a prominent feature in the books, and Dumbledore’s opposition to it is often mentioned, Azkaban doesn’t get much light shone on it in the canonical books. This is likely in part because it is such an incredibly, ridiculously cruel place that it becomes very difficult for many of us muggles to imagine it being an appropriate punishment for anyone. I won’t go into great detail, but there are very few crimes capable of causing enough pain that, even working from a perspective of vengeance, instead of justice or rehabilitation, it becomes very difficult to mathematically justify Azkaban.
To clarify, by mathematically justify, I mean, what percent of the pain a criminal inflicts by his misdeed can fairly be unleashed upon the criminal as punishment. Is a beating a proper punishment for beating someone? What about two beatings? Or three? At what point does the severity of the punishment become so much greater than that of the crime that it stops being sensible? If you slapped me, would I, absent any concerns about self defense or ensuring my future safety, be justified in immediately shooting you? Or boiling you? Or beating you to death? The murders who are so successful that we stop calling them murders and start calling them statesmen might have a shot at a mathematically (if not necessarily ethically) justifiable cell in Azkaban. For everyone else, it’s pretty difficult. And in both versions of the story, wizarding justice is NOT perfect. Innocent people go to Azkaban, and are exposed to this as well. Azkaban is pretty terrible, and most of the wizarding world just sort of... accepts it.
Anyway, I probably have more to say, but I really need to wrap this up. This probably wasn’t very coherent, so sorry about that.

Fate Cards
All Fate Cards we’ve encountered, and who pulled them. Bless Feo for compiling this here.
The Angel
Description: It depicts a being floating among golden clouds and arcs of dark red flame, shadowed face turned upward, silver halo shining bright around its flowing black locks. It’s dressed in brilliant blue robes, two dark grey wings outstretched, both hands planted firmly on a brilliant sword the colour of the sky. There are numerous vibrant golden eyes dotted across its wings, looking to the heavens, lined with black. Meaning: Divine intervention, guidance Victim: Wally
The Bluebird
Description: The card is a simple design- a small blue, red breasted bird on a branch of a white tree with black leaves and purple berries, a gorgeous red sun setting behind it. Meaning: It represents having to leave a part of yourself behind for the sake of your freedom. (Jasper) Victim: Sadie
The Caretaker
Description: The card shows a light grey figure with curly white hair and a brilliant gold tunic on a pale green background. It's hunched over its work- one hand in the air holding a black needle, pulling taught a red thread keeping its project together- a patchwork quilt. Every square is another dazzling colour, a different pattern, seeming to change every time you move your eyes over it. The quilt takes up the bottom half of the card completely. Meaning: It represents relationships where people rely on you to look after them. Deepening a bond with someone you care for deeply or like... Adopting another teen or something I guess. Victim: Poppy
The Chessboard
Description: The card depicts a battle scene, blocky silver and gold soldiers frozen in the middle of a scene of battle, spread out on a long expanse of black and white checkered territory. All the pieces are in full armour, some wield bows, some swords or axes, but all of them are bleeding, looking weary, standing under the same blood red sky choked with black smoke. Some lie dead by the feet of their comrades. Meaning: It represents being thrown into a dangerous struggle between opposing forces. The outcome is up to you. Victim: Poppy
The Cinders
Description: The card depicts a somber scene, dark ash spread mingled with snow, a single jagged, charred cross poking up through the salvageable wreckage around it. Embers still glow faintly, dotted around the burned wood like Christmas lights, red smoke spilling up into the dark sky above. Meaning:  Victim:

Either that or you're gonna learn a big secret about someone else's identity. (?) Victim: Saorise

Meaning: Absolute truths - Clarity through interference from otherworldly forces. Something to keep you grounded as you try to find what you're looking for. Victim: Poppy, Sadie
The Storm
Description: The card depicts something... it's hard to tell, really. Every time Wally moves it, it seems to change colours, a flurry of cool blues that seem like they could be a tropical hurricane, then a dark storm cloud, then a windswept canopy of lush forest. (Ledge) Victim: Saoirse
The Trickster
Description: This card depicts a hooded figure against a gold background, standing on one foot on a dark floor as their dark green cloak billows behind them with both their amber hands outstretched. Playing cards are flying everywhere, floating around them in a circle. Looking at it too long seems to make golden, animalistic eyes appear in the darkness of the hood where their face should be.  Meaning: This one's... Well. Tricky. Multifaceted. It's an unexpected happening- mostly a new power, or a new ally. Could be a revelation- something terrible, or something joyful. Something to make you feel like you're the plaything of the gods. Exciting! (Ori) Victim: Jimothy
The Troubadour
Description: The card shows a figure standing at a music stand. It seems they're addressing an orchestra, both arms in the air, notes of music bending and shifting around on their lines, dipping to weave through their fingers. They're in a ratty coat, however, plain brown clothes contrasting with their copper skin and mousy brown hair.  Meaning: A self made hero from humble beginnings. The resolution of a problem in a peaceful way. Power and prestige. Not bad! (Character?) Victim: Othello
The Vulture
Description: The bird depicted on the card is really just the skeleton of a vulture, black and red bones with dingy, dark orange feathers still clinging to them. There's a silver dot in the otherwise empty eye socket, and black smeared over its beak. Meaning: An opportunity to gain something from someone's death. Victim: Jasper
The Wanderer
Description: The card shows a silhouette in a cloak that only reaches to their shoulders, face covered in shadow. They have a billowing cloak, rainbow in hue, primary colours on one side, secondary on the other. Half of their body is white, the other is red. On the red side, they hold a bag, brimming with... something. On the white, they hold a sword, golden and glowing. Meaning: A vagrant. This one’s new! Huh! Well. This is something big wandering into your life. Or wandering out. Could be good, could be bad. That’s the spirit of the wanderer. Sometimes it’s both. (Jimothy) Victim: Saoirse, Poppy, Jimothy
The Wasp
Description: The card depicts an wasp, curled up into a perfect circle. It's black and yellow, stinger long and gold and engraved with the same symbols adorning its blue metal armour. Its face is covered with an ornate helmet, angular and sharp, all its legs covered in plates. The background is white. Meaning:  Victim:
The Witch Bottle
Description: The card depicts a green glass bottle. There's an assortment of items at the bottom, warped, with their colours mottled by the colour of the glass. There seems to be a bird skull, resting on a bed of dry grass and dark flowers with big, heart shaped petals. A faint lavender smoke comes from the open top. Meaning: A brush with a very old, often forbidden sort of magic. Victim: Poppy
The Wolf
Description: A wolf- an old one, by the looks of it, thin and lean and battle scarred, walking through a forest of silver trees and black grass. Patches of fur are missing from its golden coat, mottled with dark black scars, stained with purple blood, wary red eyes downcast. More blood blooms from its coat where arrows have pierced through it, and there is a hole in its chest dripping violet in a pool on the ground, possibly because it’s missing its heart, which it carries gingerly in its blood streaked jaws. Meaning: It represents breaking free of a relationship that was holding you back.  Victim: Calypso

The Wonkru Politics of 5x10...
The fact that Madi has the flame and is in place where she is questionably the next commander has introduced new risk into Octavia’s life.
I made a... little table to show where we are and what Octavia begging Indra in the preview was trying to do. In the below table is a sort of corrupted version of the Prisoner’s Dilemma. What it is meant to show is who has personal safety from the mob that is Wonkru based on their relationship with Wonkru. Or in plain English - If you are an enemy of Wonkru, you are in peril.
Tumblr media
At the start of 5x10 - our characters are in the (Safe, In peril) scenario. Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia’s actions were publicly witnessed. According to the number 1 (and only?) law of Wonkru - they are now the enemies of Wonkru. Octavia was sedated for most of the last episode so she is safe.
Octavia begging Indra in that promo was her desperately seeking any sort of advice on how to get back to that ( safe , safe ) scenario.
So here’s some quick commentary on where Octavia could possibly go from here:
1 - Octavia can’t pardon Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia.
If she does - she will move to the (In peril , In peril) scenario because she will be breaking the one rule of Wonkru. These people are enemies of Wonkru and if she makes special concessions for them - then she is an enemy. It is also just plain bad politics while her authority is weakened by the presence of a half-way empowered commander and the presence of Eligius.
2 - Octavia can’t run away with Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia.
I thought about this for a moment and then came around to why this doesn’t work. In theory - Octavia could get a bunch of the Indra loyalists and use them to break out Bellamy, Gaia, and Indra. However, how would they run away? The rover is gone. Plus there’s worms in that desert which would kill her; assuming Wonkru doesn’t catch her first. Never mind the fact that there’s only one place to go (Eden) and the people there want her dead. If she tries to bust Bellamy/Indra/Gaia loose, Octavia will find herself in peril again.
I mean... this could temporarily work. But it’s definitely not a long-term (i.e. longer than half a day) solution.
3 - Octavia can’t wait for more prisoners and give Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia one-sided fights they would certainly win.
When Clarke was arrested Octavia commented that Clarke would be executed because there would be no one for her to fight. This implies that there is a very short period of time between arrest and action against the arrested. Although I got some serious questions about how the battle arena worked with having multiple fights on the same day before the season started.... I’d take the most recent statement by Octavia about how executions do happen to mean that there’s no “wait til the end of the month” rule for when pit battles occur. There’s three people, and they can fight.
4 - Octavia can at least pick whether she can live with the consequences of losing Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia.
Octavia can embrace that what she has done will lead to her losing these three incredibly important people and become a hardened “love is weakness” closed-off person.
Or Octavia could also become a sort of... martyr isn’t the right word... but she could self-sacrifice and say something like “I will be the one who pays the price of their crimes. With my death, Wonkru will have been returned to the surface and my time is over. You will go back to following the commanders and these three will be spared”.
However it is not a no-risk path. Even if she makes this move there is no guarantee her self-sacrifice would work. We saw how Octavia’s last dying wish (Indra being in charge) wasn’t followed, and since Wonkru is divided in two on who they follow the in-fighting that could (and on this show - would) follow could cause injury or death to the people she is trying to protect, which would make her sacrifice be in vain.
5 - It might be too late for Octavia to re-frame Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia’s actions as being in favour of Wonkru.
I had some other speculation that maybe Octavia will discover that Monty’s algae has solved their farm problems, and that this action could help save the people in the pit.
There’s some grand-lies Octavia could tell around how she bravely tried the algae first to make sure it was safe for Wonkru, but the first batch wasn’t good and she nearly died, which is why upon Jackson’s suggestion that Bellamy, Gaia, and Indra went ahead with planning for her succession.
Is there too many holes in this narrative? Could Octavia even figure out this convoluted lie to tell on her own? I’m not sure...
But either way - it is in direct opposition to Octavia yelling to the entirety of Wonkru that Bellamy, Gaia, and Indra are traitors and enemies when they were first put on their knees in the pit.
6 - Octavia needs a miracle.
Most of the wishing and hoping that I’ve seen on my dash is for Clarke to realize the error of her ways and to go back with Madi to rescue Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia. In this scenario - assuming Madi retains control over the masses, Octavia might make it out alive.
Although a miracle may occur, Octavia can’t plan on having a miracle and Kane used up the divine intervention escape rope in 5x03.
7 - Octavia needs to act on information we don’t fully know about yet.
Yes it was inevitable - if I’m writing something eventually it has to talk about The Dark Year. Especially since the next episode is called “The Dark Year”.
Octavia made a choice “alone” during that year. We don’t know what her choice was or too much about the nature of how that choice was came about. But perhaps that choice can somehow resurface in favour of Bellamy, Indra, and Gaia.
Or it could be something else entirely... but I can’t think of anything else foreshadowed we could guess as a possibility at the moment.
We’ll wait and see.

Bits and Pieces
A gem that does illegal modifications on pearls, her own pearl, and the space between them.
.....
Bits and Pieces
Author's note: a commenter on ASOP said she'd like to see more of the Orthoclase and pearl characters from the most recent chapter, and I felt like expanding a little on their story too, so Lyprelia here you go!
Also, because I'm a somewhat shameless self-promoter, please support my novel if you like my work:
US link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BGSPPBY
UK link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07BGSPPBY
…..
“That last one had some shimmer left over. They really do go overboard with the new line....you want some?”
“No thank you.”
“Why not? You'd look like new, I've got nowhere else to put it...”
“I'd just prefer to stay like this, thank you.”
“Fine, be boring. I'll keep it in the back in case you change your mind.”
…..
Orthoclase hadn't set out to be one of Homeworld's most sought-after underground remodelers. She'd fallen into it quite by accident, during the waning cycles of the zoatox war. She had come out of the ground much smaller than the average Orthoclase and therefore unsuited for direct combat, but a knack with machinery had put her in the hangar squad.
The Jaspers had a set of three pearls at the start of the war (illegal, of course) and had broken one. When a second one seemed on the verge of breaking, one of the Jaspers brought it to Orthoclase.
“What do you want me to do with it?” she had asked, only getting a shrug in response.
“At least get it to stop making that weird noise,” the Jasper begged sullenly, already walking away.
The 'weird noise' was a high-pitched whine coming from the back of the pearl's throat. Orthoclase only took the job because she had nothing better to do; she took out an old half-scrambled manual on pearl maintenance and deduced that the only way to stop the noise was to sever the pearl's manifested vocal chords.
“That can't be right,” she muttered to herself, searching the databases for other solutions.
In the end, she found that applying the right amount of pressure to the edge of the pearl's gem setting would get it to stop making involuntary noises. She fashioned a somewhat crude splint out of a polymer base and soldered it on, and sure enough the pearl stopped making the noise. She sent it back to the Jasper.
Word soon spread that Orthoclase was some sort of genius when it came to pearls. The fact that the pearl was broken two cycles later didn't seem to matter.
…..
“That last customer paid us a bit extra. Fancy some new apparel?”
“No, I'm all right, thank you.”
“Come on, you've been wearing that old thing since you left whats-her-face...pick something comfortable.”
“I am comfortable as I am.”
“Okay, guess I'll spend it all on compound then.”
…..
Everything she learned about pearls, she learned on her own. She tracked down all the manuals, even for the old, outdated and the limited editions. She picked up tips and tricks on the underground information banks. She experimented on broken pearls during her brief time as an impound worker, before they were due to be processed.
It fascinated her; they were so alien and yet also more like real gems than appliances. She'd heard the comparisons to zoatoxes and scoffed. There were superficial similarities, but they resembled gems more closely. Even their creation was gemlike, though it was the slow water-based buildup rather than growing in the earth.
The potential they had made Orthoclase a little sad that they were just used as a luxury item. From what she had learned, pearls had a versatility that was rare in gems. They adapted perfectly to just about any task. Perhaps if they had been used more effectively in the zoatox war, Diamond Core wouldn't have had to make the sacrifice she did.
…..
“How about a recolour? All the fashionable pearls are in pastels right now.”
“I'm happy with my colour, thank you.”
“Really? Not even your hair?”
“Really. I am fine.”
“You know it won't cost me anything....I have all the stuff here, I can do it no problem, just say the word.”
“I will keep that in mind. Still, no thank you.”
…..
Given how fascinated Orthoclase had become with all things pearl, it took quite a while for her to get a pearl of her own. She couldn't afford a brand new one, and the black market pearls came with heavy damage (that she could probably fix, but it made her uncomfortable for reasons she didn't quite understand.)
In the end, it was a pearl that came through the impound that caught her eye. It looked to be in near-perfect condition, if plainly dressed in a short indigo tunic with its dark red hair pinned back in a thick tail. It had unusually large eyes, typical of the 5VO series, and something in its expression captured Orthoclase's attention.
She pretended to crush it, but instead she slipped it into her pocket. The impound had sensors to prevent this kind of thing, but she knew well how to get past them.
She remodeled it, not extensively but just enough tweaking to satisfy herself. She removed its spike, and when it had finally stopped crying and flinching at everything she gave its functions an upgrade. She set it to work on simple tasks at first, handling her stocks and orders, filtering her requests and organizing her tools. After a while, she started trusting it with more important things.
“I should've done this a long time ago,” she said one cycle, midway through a mass tweaking on a pearl that her pearl was assisting with. “You're better than Jade ever was.”
Her old partner Jade had been good, but suffered from bouts of squeamishness. The pearl, on the other hand, was holding both sides of the worked-on pearl's ribcage open without even blinking when she got a splash of liquid nacre on her face. Her stoicism when it came to the really messy parts of pearl remodeling was nothing short of astounding.
…..
“That was a strange one, right? It's not just me?”
“No, that was very strange.”
“Maybe she had some sort of thing for fused gems or something...she got lucky we had a scrap pearl on hand. Speaking of, since we only used the arms, the legs...”
“No, thank you.”
“Figured you'd say that. Think of what you could do with four legs. Doesn't appeal?”
“Not really, no.”
…..
The pearl turned her more-like-a-hobby-job into a fully fledged operation. She efficiently sorted through Orthoclase's requests as they came, memorized at least as much of the manuals and notes on pearls as Orthoclase had in the early cycles, and handled the risks Orthoclase took with as much indifference as she handled everything else.
The few remodelers Orthoclase had worked with before had balked at the idea of picking up pearls in public areas, or gathering scrap pearls directly from the impound, but thanks to Pearl's subspace transporting whatever she was working on was easy.
It allowed her to take on riskier jobs, jobs that other remodelers would never risk. Jobs disguising stolen pearls, fixing what was left of the barracks pearls, even disguising pearls as other gems. That one was particularly tricky, because it involved opening up the pearl's manifested form and warping its skeletal base to allow for extra mass. If done incorrectly, or if the gem doing the operation made a wrong move, it could potentially corrupt the mass and turn toxic.
Pearl, however, was perfectly fine with holding another pearl's innards while Orthoclase worked on them. At least, she thought she was fine with it. If Pearl wasn't, she gave no outward sign.
…..
“That's the third one this cycle. We're not doing it.”
“Can we afford to turn it down?”
“Yes, if we wait to order those spray matts next tripcycle. We just have to lay low for a while. They can find someone else.”
“....”
“....”
“....”
“....you can act relieved, you know.”
“What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean. I know you hate those jobs. You don't have to pretend you don't.”
“I will do as I'm told.”
“I know you will, that's not the point....look, be honest with me, okay?”
“All right.”
“You hate those jobs.”
“Yes.”
“And you're relieved we're not doing this one.”
“.....”
“Well?”
“...no, I'm not relieved.”
“Okay....tell me why.”
“At least if we did the job we could block her pain receptors. If another remodeler takes the job, they won't do that.”
“Oh.”
“....”
“....”
“....fine, we'll take the job.”
…..
It was getting harder and harder to do the remodelling work, as she got to know Pearl better.
She had always known there was something more to pearls than Homeworld imagined, but she hadn't seen it properly until the first time she caught Pearl modifying a work-in-progress. And now...how could she not see it?
Orthoclase found herself watching Pearl out of the corner of her eye as she shaved down another pearl's gem, cracked open a chest or sawed off a limb, watching for a telltale flinch or even a blink.
Nothing.
It was frustrating. Beyond those first two cycles after her spike had been removed, Pearl had never really shown any emotion. Orthoclase knew they were there, they had to be. If they weren't, where had her sense of mercy come from?
Ultimately, the more she probed and refashioned and rebuilt pearl after pearl, her own Pearl stayed distant, unknowable.
…..
“Have you got a glitch or something?”
“I don't think so. I feel fine.”
“Your fingers....they look a bit twitchy lately.”
“It is nothing to be concerned about.”
“Did you pick it up from one of the new jobs? I see them do it too, is it some sort of virus?”
“No.”
“Right. Whatever.”
“.....”
“....if there was something wrong, you'd tell me. Right?”
“Of course.”
“So this finger thing....it's not something to worry about?”
“Not at all.”
“Well then.....get back to work.”

I am half way through s5- so far I haven't loved it, it's sorta disconnected for me. But o have 3 questions maybe you can answer1. Do we find out why felicity liked Billy? 2. Do we find out why Lila doesn't like felicity and asks if she's gonna be a problem? 3. The 100- is there a fan theory as to why she wasn't in it much? Also was it supposed to be his "dream life" or a "what if" if Dream life- says something about Olicity I think, what if- why isn't he a cheat? Lost.
1. If you mean is there ever a conversation where Felicity talks about what she saw in Billy or a moment where we go back and see the beginning of their relationship then no, we never get that. But (and I’m not sure exactly where you are in the season so I’m going to assume you’re somewhere around episode nine) I do feel that we see enough of Billy to judge for ourselves what she saw in him. From what we’re shown, Billy is very much in keeping with Felicity’s type. He’s pretty similar to Ray or Barry actually. He’s a detective- he’s trying to do good and help people in a similar way to Felicity’s superheroes she’s fallen for. Just.. less extreme. He also stands out for his honesty, being one of the few non-corrupt members of the scpd. And Felicity is specifically looking for honesty at this stage of her life. He seems sweet and respectful. He takes Felicity’s secret about working with the Green Arrow in stride and doesn’t pressure her. I’m trying to remember further details but it’s been a while since I’ve watched that part of the season and, ultimately, he’s not that important. All we really need to know is that some six to eight months after leaving her fiance, Felicity was trying to move on. Billy was supposed to be nice but unremarkable; sort of a guy who on paper is great but never going to be the love of her life. Really, Billy does bear strong resemblance (in general type) to Ray and Barry, and I think what we see is that that is the type of man that Felicity goes to when she’s trying to get away from Oliver. When Oliver does something to hurt her or push her away, and she’s trying to move on she goes to this same sort of man which is sort of “Oliver Lite”. The heroism without the complications is sort of the goal. So a guy who is heroic in some way, without the total self sacrifice. A guy who is strong without being as scarred (metaphorically). A guy who can lead but isn’t such a leader that he’s completely single-minded and independent. And so on. She’s looking for everything she loves about Oliver without all the things that cause her so much grief. But ultimately those men aren’t Oliver and so she cares about them but doesn’t love them like she loves Oliver. And Billy is just a piece of showing this.
2. Lyla doesn’t dislike Felicity. That’s never shown and we have a fair amount of evidence to the contrary. However, the instance you’re talking about takes place in very specific circumstances. Lyla is trying to rescue her husband who is in prison and doesn’t want to be rescued and she knows/feels that Felicity is going to disagree with her methods of rescuing him. Felicity does disagree. When Lyla asks if Felicity is going to be a problem, she’s just asking if Felicity will try to stop them or deter them in some way. Lyla and Oliver are very similar people, they go about solving problems in much the same way and they view the world with the same time of objective oriented, ends-justify-the-means kind of attitude. Felicity is not the same way. So there’s potential to butt heads, but no in a way that indicates resentment or dislike. Felicity and Lyla end up on different sides of things again later in the season for slightly different reasons (I’ll try not to spoil anything specific) and it’s again because of different personalities, different world views, different positions. And again there isn’t really anything personally between Felicity and Lyla, no dislike or resentment breeding the conflict. Just some tension borne from being different people and some complicated circumstances affecting one of them personally.
3. I don’t know about any fan theories regarding this I can only offer you my own thoughts. The 100 isn’t purely a What If or a Dream World. It’s a mixture of both. So basically it appears to have been a dream with some specific parameters. There’s a base What If scenario- what if Oliver never went on the Gambit, what if Diggle were the Green Arrow, what if Sara never went on the Gambit, and Ray’s ‘What If” is harder to pinpoint but it appears to be something along the lines of what if Ray never lost Anna. And their minds seem to have filled in the details as a form of wish fulfillment. So in some ways it’s bound to the logistics of the what if and some ways they get to dream a better version. So Sara just sort of dreams up a version of herself that wasn’t ever interested in Oliver so that she never hurts Laurel and never becomes Canary/White Canary and all the stuff that goes with that. Diggle gives himself a lot of attributes of what he associates with the Green Arrow, even though it doesn’t make sense for him individually- he has the same lair, the same costume even though it was inspired by a man he never met, there’s no way Diggle would have known archery etc. Oliver basically starts with the idea of the Gambit never happening. Now realistically that could happen one of two ways: no cheating or no undertaking. And he seems to have chosen both. And from there he has sort of this wish fulfillment belief that he still would have eventually become a good man, that Tommy would be successful, that his family would be whole. But there are certain logistics in his mind that are obvious enough that he doesn’t seem to be able to escape them. It’s a strong association that no Gambit means no Green Arrow, no Diggle, no Felicity. So his mind supplies that. It doesn’t mean those are parts of his life he wishes gone, it just means that he has a deep seeded sense of causality that his mind didn’t get past. And once you remove those elements (Gambit, Arrow, Diggle, Felicity, cheating) it becomes very natural that Oliver would eventually marry Laurel. And Oliver did love her at one point so I think the desire to fix that, and seeing that as a happy thing in an alternative life is very natural to him. And I also think that there were certain things Oliver craved resolution for that he never got. His parents and his relationship with Laurel are the two main things. So, given the chance, his mind tried to provide that, much the same way that in Three Ghosts his mind tried to give him resolution for Shado and Tommy (and was fairly effective).
As to more generally why Felicity wasn’t a bigger part of the 100th- I think there are several story telling needs that  pushed this. 1. They needed a main Arrow character in the real world to drive that part of the story- Felicity makes the most sense since she’s the most capable at what they needed. 2. Having Felicity abducted is difficult for several reasons, one being that Felicity’s big regrets that would need to be changed are much nearer than everyone else so it’s hard to have a dream world correct them when the base premise takes place so long before them and virtually erases anything to do with them (a lot of her regrets and things she’d fix are very tied up with actual events of the series and with Oliver) there are things that you could do with her but they come sort of at odds with the rest of the Dream World instead of fitting in with it. A dreaming Felicity doesn’t end up in the Arrowcave with Dig, or dating Ray Palmer ( I don’t think). But she also doesn’t end up having anything to do with Oliver, Thea or Sara. So you’d almost need a whole new Dream Felicity sub plot and that’s just not feasible. 3. The big cathartic climax of the dream is action based and Felicity doesn’t fight. 4. Felicity’s issues and regrets are also being played out differently in the course of the larger season, so addressing them too much in the 100th diminishes the effectiveness of her season arc 5.Felicity is very present in the story nonetheless. She’s with Diggle as a foundational part of being the Green Arrow. She’s with Ray as an embodiment of what happiness looks like. She has the B storyline in the real world. And she’s symbolically present through Smoak Technologies being what guides Oliver et al. home. While giving her a primary role in the episode didn’t fit in with what they’d built and the concept they were exploring, Felicity’s importance was never undersold because she’s woven through every part of the episode and is emphasized heavily as the light guiding them all and one of the big missing pieces of this dream life.
