Hey!
2. That one genre you always try to avoid writing about and why?
7. Which OC do you want to punch in the face?
I've already done #7 so here's #2!
2. High fantasy. I just... I never really got into it as much as other people did, and my few attempts to write it have felt really limp and half-baked. I think it's just the nature of the genre: high fantasy stories typically need a shitload of exposition and setup before the plot kicks off, otherwise you're introducing totally foreign concepts to the reader at every turn. I know this isn't a hard and fast rule, but with a genre less grounded in human experience, you have to make a lot of concessions.
Note that I'm not disparaging fantasy in any way! If you're out there stumbletumblr-ing over this post and you write high fantasy, you're cool as hell! This is just my experience with reading and writing high fantasy :P
