I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I feel like the reaction to Ozzy at the Stick or Switch was kind of exaggerated. This said by an Ozzy stan who would’ve also liked to have more, btw.

It’s just:

— Ozzy and MC aren’t in a relationship. They’re not even in a couple. That doesn’t mean he can’t have a reaction when seeing her, but it’s obvious that the point of Stick or Twist was to capture how the couples were doing.

— Ozzy did still have a reaction when seeing MC. Even two, actually. Maybe they’re not what a lot of his stans were imagining, but they make perfect sense. Ozzy was rattled when he was MC, in a “I knew you were still here but having you right in front of me is another thing” kind of way. He even felt discomfort towards Grace, and they weren’t doing anything romantic.

— Ozzy was even more rattled by seeing Amelia bring Marshall back, and that was clearly taking center stage in his mind.

— In all of this, yes, Ozzy was happy to see Grace, but nothing romantic happened during Stick or Switch. The only thing Ozzy showed us with his reaction is that he cares for Grace.

— But, most importantly, Ozzy went on the show to find love. If that’s how one wants to play it, so has MC. Yes, they have clearly found something great together, but they’ve also known each other for nine days (three of which weren’t even spent together). It’s normal to have doubts, it’s normal not to rush into abandoning the Villa, it’s normal to explore one’s options and work on figuring out what one’s feeling in the process.

(That goes for both Ozzy and MC. Some people make it seem like it’s a one-way street.)

— And to top it off, MC got “eliminated” before she and Ozzy had the chance to define anything except that they have feelings for each other. That’s good, but not a solid base for certainty when you’ve just met one another and are on a show to flirt, fall in love, or even just take the money. Again, it’s totally normal to have doubts. And it’s totally normal to want to respect your partner’s feelings in a delicate moment (such as Stick or Twist), even if your heart lies elsewhere.

Plus, have we forgotten that the postcard is also a thing in the main Villa? MC had every right to have fun in CA, but it’s normal to have Ozzy and\or the other LIs form doubts about the postcard. Hell, FB will have probably taken an “innocent,” out of context moment and framed it so that even MCs who didn’t do anything in CA looked bad.

So, again, why are so many people so angry? Ozzy’s reaction wasn’t bad; it was even pretty understandable. We don’t even know if and what he saw of CA\what the authors may have made him believe. Give the guy time to process things, he’s human too.

Then, if he talks to MC and things still don’t evolve, the hurt will be completely justified. For now, let’s just wait and see.

(Btw, am I the only one hoping that Elliot leaves MC single and we’re actually given first choice at the next recoupling - end of this week, max. next week - for some reason? I saw some people expecting that Elliot’s choice will be based on ours, but I don’t think so. Considering the point we’re at and the fact that even slow burn routes usually get unlocked around episode thirty, leaving MC single at this stage would be the perfect opportunity to open all routes\lock in with the LI one has chosen. If one hasn’t switched, of course. If one has, they could simply get first choice at the next recoupling, no explanation needed.)

I dont think it's an exaggeration but more so a collective sigh on FBs terrible writing coupled with our s5 trauma. if you weren't a Suresh girly in S5 you might not have had as many deja vu type flashbacks with this last update. Consider this.... last season Suresh basically told us he wanted no one else but us and he gave us a big show on the terrace only to be whisked off to Casa, come back with another girl on his arm and barely acknowledging that we were in the villa. Cut to this season, MC + Ozzy have they've told each other they want to be coupled up and MC kissed Ozzy on her way out of the villa. And then we walk back into the villa to him barely acknowledging our presence. Just saying "we were sure you'd gone home" but then acknowledging Grace the same girl he supposedly isnt attracted to.

look im not writing off Ozzy AT ALL. but I fully feel people are justified in feeling slighted by that last update. it was giving mediocre. and literally every single post casa fan fic Ive read has been better than anything fb strung together. For me THATS why im annoyed. why is the fandom better at writing meaningful stories over people who actually get paid to do this??? Even if AI is writing the scripts someone has to read this over to make sure it makes sense and it's very obvious no one has.

PLAYER_HAPPY: Tell me about Flo. I haven’t had the chance to speak to her properly yet.

{0}_HAPPY: I think you’ll like her. Chilled but no nonsense and lots of fun.

{0}_FLIRTY: I think you two have similar vibes.

PLAYER_HAPPY: And what about you and her?

{0}_HAPPY: It’s going really well, she’s a great girl!

{0}_IDLE: But in truth there was a bit of an ulterior motive to coupling up.

PLAYER_SURPRISED: Oh?

{0}_EMBARRASSED: The postcard.

PLAYER_EMBARRASSED: Oh yeah?

{0}_EMBARRASSED: Seeing Amelia getting vibey with Marshall… I kinda knew she would twist.

{0}_HAPPY: So me and Flo decided to give things a shot.

{0}_IDLE: But I think Flo isn’t closed off. Which is fine, neither am I.

PLAYER_IDLE: Interesting.

{0}_IDLE: I also think I’m not quite her type.

PLAYER_HAPPY: What is her type then?

{0}_HAPPY: Who knows.

{0}_FLIRTY: But she described the type of girl she’s into too…

PLAYER_FLIRTY: And…

{0}_FLIRTY: And she basically described you.

PLAYER_SURPRISED: Really?

{0}_HAPPY: Yep…

Suddenly you hear the sounds of an argument starting inside the villa garden.

PLAYER_IDLE: What’s going on over there?

You head back over to the lawn to find out what’s happening.

You arrive with Elliot at the villa entrance. He lets go of his suitcase handle and turns to you.

ELLIOT_IDLE: I really didn’t think it would end like this.

PLAYER_IDLE: You didn’t?

ELLIOT_SAD: No, I thought maybe I had what it takes to last longer.

ELLIOT_SAD: I really hoped I’d make it to the final couples.

ELLIOT_IDLE: Make it there with somebody like you.

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: I didn’t come in here with a gameplan or anything, but…

ELLIOT_IDLE: I really thought that I’d at least find somebody to develop something with.

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: Always the bridesmaid, I guess.

Elliot smiles to himself.

PLAYER_FLIRTY: What are you smiling at?

ELLIOT_HAPPY: I was just thinking about my late arrival.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: I’ll never forget you opening that treasure chest.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: When I jumped out and saw your face, I knew I was gonna be in for a wild summer.

ELLIOT_SAD: Just wish it had been longer. Maybe if I’d been your day one?

Elliot trails off.

ELLIOT_SAD: If you don’t mind me asking, what made you re-couple?

{0} is the better choice for me

PLAYER_IDLE: I made the right choice by re-coupling with {0}.

PLAYER_FLIRTY: I have a stronger bond with him than I ever did with you.

ELLIOT_IDLE: That’s a pretty great reason. I can’t compete with that.

It could have gone either way

PLAYER_IDLE: To be honest, it was a tough decision.

PLAYER_IDLE: I might as well have tossed a coin.

ELLIOT_SURPRISED: Well, that’s unexpected. I guess small decisions can have big consequences.

PLAYER_IDLE: I just don’t think we click.

ELLIOT_SURPRISED: Really?!

PLAYER_SERIOUS: Is it really that surprising!

ELLIOT_SURPRISED: I guess not, I just thought we had a pretty good connection.

PLAYER_HAPPY: Agree to disagree I guess.

ELLIOT_EMBARRASSED: I guess so.

I’m not gonna tell you

PLAYER_IDLE: Elliot, I’m afraid you’ll never know.

PLAYER_HAPPY: I’ll be keeping my reasons to myself.

ELLIOT_IDLE: Fair enough, your reasons are your reasons. None of my business.

PLAYER_FLIRTY: So, are you going to spill the tea like you promised?

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: My pleasure. I guess I’ll start with the Ozzy and Grace fight.

PLAYER_SERIOUS: Yeah, what was that about? Ozzy said she broke his trust?

ELLIOT_EMBARRASSED: Well, it was kinda about me. Grace told him that I’d turned her head.

PLAYER_SURPRISED: When? When we were coupled up?

ELLIOT_SERIOUS: No, it was before then. I had a chat with her before I coupled with you.

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: We had a bit of a flirt, but nothing hectic. My head was on you.

ELLIOT_IDLE: And we had a laugh, it felt more friends vibes really.

PLAYER_SURPRISED: Then why did she tell Ozzy you’d turned her head?

ELLIOT_EMBARRASSED: Honestly? I think she was trying to make him jealous.

ELLIOT_EMBARRASSED: She could tell that you’d turned his head. I think she wanted to turn the tables.

ELLIOT_IDLE: Plus, she told me some personal stuff about Ozzy. I think that upset him.

PLAYER_EMBARRASSED: What personal stuff?

ELLIOT_SAD: I think Ozzy’s got more insecurities than you’d expect deep down.

ELLIOT_IDLE: I think that’s why he comes across a bit unsure of his own mind sometimes.

ELLIOT_SAD: He’s an overthinker and gets in his head.

PLAYER_SERIOUS: Interesting.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: But I chatted to Ozzy a lot during Casa Amor. He’s a good guy.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: He’s got serious morals, even if he makes some mistakes.

ELLIOT_SERIOUS: And I think if he could’ve twisted with you, he would’ve.

PLAYER_SURPRISED: Really?

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: For sure. He might still be coupled with Grace but I see you two ending up together.

ELLIOT_SERIOUS: If you want that, of course.

PLAYER_FLIRTY: Interesting hearing your take. So, who wrote my love note then?

PLAYER_IDLE: Grace thought it was you.

ELLIOT_EMBARRASSED: It wasn’t me, sadly.

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: It was {0} who wrote the letter.

ELLIOT_FLIRTY: I think she felt a bit upstaged by Ozzy and {0} making big plays for you.

ELLIOT_IDLE: She’s a much less showy person than them.

ELLIOT_IDLE: She told me she wanted to do something more intimate.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: She wanted to make you smile when you were unpacking at home.

ELLIOT_IDLE: That’s when she thought you’d been dumped.

ELLIOT_HAPPY: Did you think it was her that left the note?

Greetings from the villa! Finesse is back with another update.

Toby arrived in the villa today. He’s very fit and as much as I wanted him to sweep Grace off her feet, he’s taken more to Amy. To my great surprise (just kidding, I saw this coming), my sister’s head turned from Ozzy as soon as Toby’s arrival was announced. I enjoyed my speed date with him. Ozzy got proper jealous actually. It even led to Ozzy & Grace officially ending their relationship! He even pulled me aside to tell me he wants to be the one walking out of the villa with me. Things are really looking up for us. However, the weirdest thing happened to me. Marshall said he has feelings for me! I gagged. I told him I was not interested him and never would choose him in a coupling. Harsh? Maybe but he needed to get the message.

We had the biggest challenge of the summer: Snog, Marry, Pie! I got snogged by Flo. Chloe and Ozzy asked to marry me. And I got pied by Jamal and Roberto. For my snog I chose to snog Chloe, marry Ozzy, and pie Amelia. She barely acknowledged why I pied her so let me make it clear: she keeps chasing all the men I’m interested in. When she can’t get to them (like Ozzy), she goes for a close substitute (like Marshall). She hasn’t told me the full truth about Zeph and I don’t know if I can believe what she’s told me. She took it well, all things considered. Marshall and Ozzy pied each other and squashed the beef. I guess Amy should look into family counseling (thank you, I laughed at that too).

I spoke to Grace and it’s official: she and Ozzy are over. She’s even given us the green light to crack on! Ozzy and made the most of the shower after Snog, Marry, Pie. We started off washing each other but it got pretty steamy. Yes, that’s right. Ozzy and I went all the way. We both agreed that it was worth the wait. We’re going to choose each other at the next recoupling. I’m so ready to be official with Ozzy.

Then in the evening we had to vote on a girl and boy to dump. The girls voted for a boy and the boys voted for a girl. Unfortunately, I told one of the boys to vote for Flo. As much as I like her, I did tell Chloe I wanted us to stay casual after Casa Amor. However, I told Roberto to tell Flo how he feels about her. He’s got a crush on her and they’d make the cutest couple! Jamal advocated for Flo to stay but also wanted to vote me off the island! How dare he! As if he didn’t forget kissing Amy her first date in the villa. Well, I didn’t stoop to his level. I actually said Marshall should get voted off. However he said he’d hate for me to get dumped because he’ll always wonder if we could’ve become a couple. Yeah, he’s that delusional. In the end, we each voted privately. Flo and Jamal were voted off. Flo seemed heartbroken, as were we all. However, Jamal threw a fit that was totally out of character! He flew off the handle insisting he’s not just an OG but “the OG.” In the end, he did leave. I hate that it ended this way but c’est la vie. The final recoupling is right around the corner. Next time you hear from me, Fozzy will be an official ship in the villa!

“The Road to Rock n’ Roll - Guitars” Date: March 14, 2019 © Scott Fraser Photography

Dedicated to Rod Coulter. The first guitarist in my life.

In 1971 legendary guitar player and song writer Alvin Lee wrote the song “I’d Love to Change the World”. I was born in 1970, so it’s before my time. But I did grow up listening to it, thanks to three amazing uncles. In 1994, the Sunset Strip based band, L.A. Guns released a cover of it on their album Vicious Circles. With all respect to Alvin Lee, I prefer Tracii Guns’ version of the song. It’s got an edge to it. It touches my soul. Tracii’s chops, his notes, pure, clean, defined, at times ethereal, and delivered with a punch - I can’t help myself, but smile. I end up air guitaring to it every time. In my head I see his fingers on the fretboard, and his other hand as he strums and picks. I see the body of the guitar, the pick-ups, the dials. In my head while I am listening, Tracii is playing live on stage, and I am front-row right in front of him, soaking up with every sense, the moment.

But let’s back up a bit.

1975 was a seminal year for me. It was the year I decided I wanted to play drums, and it was the year I took an active interest in photography. I was five at the time. Thanks to the music of Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys, and a couple of photographers named Linda McCartney and  L.A. based photographer Greg Papazian.

Uncle Art was cool enough to allow this little kid, hang out with him and his friends. CHOM FM would play in the background while Art and his friends would flip through rock magazines. Here I was this five year old kid hanging out with a bunch of fifteen to twenty year olds, while they chilled, played cards and listening to music. I loved it, it was my sanctuary. I would sit quietly out of the way, and just listen as they talked about the music playing, and the photographs in the magazines. They would discuss for hours on end the merit of this song, or that song. Who played it better? The meaning of the lyrics, how “deep” a note went, the crunch of the electric guitar. How cool so and so looked in that shot. And they would ask me what I thought, including me in the conversations. They were teens in the mid seventies in Montreal, had long hair, and cool clothes. Leather jackets and denim, like their heroes in the bands they listened to. That bedroom in that little house on the east end of Montreal is where my rock n’ roll journey began.

In the fall of 1975 I would buy my first albums at a local record store. I knew I wanted a Beach Boy album, and I had enough money saved up to buy a second album. I had hoped that Art would come along to advise me as to what to buy because I wanted something that wasn’t my mom and dad’s music. I wanted something like the music I heard on the FM station and like what Art and his friends listened to. I ended up purchasing a K-Tel album with a bunch of different bands playing songs on it. I figured it was the best way to own new music.The first song I fell i love with on that record was ���Smoking’ In The Boys Room” by Brownsville Station. I had hoped when I bought the album that I would have new songs to play my drums along to. But it was the guitar playing that caught my attention. The twang, the rhythm and the way it sounded. Yeah, I loved the drums in it as well, but it really did catch my attention because of the guitar. It’s a balls out blues tune done rock n’ roll.

The music photography of the early seventies until the late1980’s would show case some of the best photography ever done. Before the internet and modern social media, bands and musicians used photographs in magazines to define their image and look. The record labels had long ago realized you could sell more records if your band was being showcased in a music magazine. It was also the era of the fanzine as independent writers, journalists and photographers documented the local scene. It was the era as a teen that you hung posters of the bands you loved on your bedroom walls. And many went a step further, like myself, cutting photos out of magazines to pin to on our walls. Punk and Metal came of age, and Generation X grew into teens and young adults. Raised on the photographs, posters and the FM waves we grew into young adults as we searched for our own identities. Static images had been our visual medium of consumption, that is until video came along and killed a radio star.

As a teenager I got five dollars a week allowance, so it would take me three weeks of saving to buy a new album which was anywhere from ten to fifteen dollars. Birthday, christmas or any gift money went towards music. In a month I could save and buy one album and one to two rock magazines. Babysitting and odd jobs were a means to an end. It was an era where a lot of the time that meant I bought an album without hearing more than one song on it. Other times you bought because you had liked the artwork, or photos on the album cover. Or maybe your friends had talked about it, or you had read about it in Circus or Hit Parader magazine.

My friends and I would make agreements as to who bought what album so that we could get together and share them. I’d buy Metallica, Rod would buy Ozzy Osbourne, Jay would buy Def Leppard. My friends and I would trade albums with one another so that each of us, could get a chance to hear new music. You went out and bought the albums for yourself so that you could look at the photos, the artwork, and the credits and if you were lucky, the lyrics while listening to the album play. You went to concerts and bought T-shirts, posters, back patches and tour books and when you got home from the concert, you’d share it all with your friends the following day.

Back to the guitar…

I’m a Randy Rhoads guy. Yes, I appreciate what Jimi Hendrix did. But I prefer the sound, the tones and the classical influence of Randy’s playing. Randy was a metal/hard-rock/classical guitarist. Those iconic photos of him with his Les Paul and Jackson V are forever burned into my memory. That first time I heard Crazy Train by Ozzy off of the Blizzard of Ozz album, I was blown away. In that moment I knew I would never ever play that good, and I was okay with that. I didn’t have to. I knew right then and there, I wanted to either play in bands and with people who could play like that, or somehow be part of the scene. Maybe I would be a roadie, maybe a guitar tech, maybe a lighting guy. I didn’t care what I did, as long as I was part of it. Over the years I played in bands, worked as a lighting tech, help promote shows and gigs, created gig posters, designed album covers and T-shirts, and have done roadie more than I care to admit.

To this day I can’t play guitar to save my life. That is on me. I have owned some beautiful guitars over the years including a 1986 USA made Kramer, but I never put the time and effort in to really learn. There was always something else I wanted to do, and I liked singing, so I would work on vocals. I did however fill my life with guitar players. Starting with Rod Coulter who had been a childhood friend and it has continued to players like Benny Kemp who plays in a rising speed metal band Roadrash. They are my friends, they are people I call Brother and Sister, they are my Rock n’ Roll Family. They have been my mentors and others have been my protege. We’re a family and I am so grateful for that.

At fourty-eight years of age, I still love my music loud. I love my punk more than ever, and am still listening to my metal. I still air guitar along to the songs I love. If I know the words odds are I am going to be singing along. I still think of putting a band together form time to time and recording album, maybe one day I will. These days though, I am happy to be the Photographer. I love photographing musicians and their instruments. I am an editorial music photographer. I’m there to document the moment and in the process make the musicians look good. I am shooting first and foremost for the musicians. I am also an artist, so i want to have something that means something to myself as well as the musician in question.

At this stage in my life my photographs have been published in music magazines, used as album covers, album art work, promo posters and T-shirts. I’d like to think I have my own style, and I thank my mentors for taking the time to teach me how to do what I now do so well. Thank you Mike, Scott, Greg and Frank - my shots wouldn’t be what they are without your tutelage.

The photographs within the series is for the musicians who play the notes. It may just be “a piece of wood, with six metal strings” but in the hands of a musician who knows how to play, it is tool of magic. It’s my attempt as an artist to create a visual representation of the moment, the energy, the sound being played. To capture in colour and monochrome, the feel of it all, at that moment the music is playing. The use of noise and grain to match the distortion and saturation of the Marshall amps. It is my humble attempt as an artist to say Thank You.

2017 NFL Preview: Can we count on Ravens to be contenders anymore?

Shutdown Corner is previewing all 32 teams as we get ready for the NFL season, counting down the teams one per weekday in reverse order of our initial 2017 power rankings. No. 1 will be revealed on Aug. 2, the day before the Hall of Fame Game kicks off the preseason.

The Baltimore Ravens are still a reliable brand name in the NFL. They’re one of the few NFL franchises you expect to contend each year.

The Ravens, with the rock-solid duo of coach John Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome, have been in that select group of consistent, elite franchises for a while. But are the Ravens in that circle of trust anymore?

The Ravens are just 31-33 since winning Super Bowl XLVII. They’ve finished third in the AFC North three times the past four seasons, with one second-place finish. They’ve made the playoffs once in that time. In the NFL Network’s “Top 100 Players” list, the Ravens had just one entry: guard Marshal Yanda (No. 43), who doesn’t play an impact position. Only three teams had fewer top 100 players. That list has its clear faults every year, but it does point out the Ravens lack of blue-chip talent.

We generally assume the Ravens will be in playoff contention. The track record is strong. They’re well coached. There’s still talent, especially in the secondary, although a few poor drafts have hurt depth. The Ravens weren’t far off last season either; the Pittsburgh Steelers scored with nine seconds left on Christmas to beat the Ravens and clinch the division. If Baltimore won that game, they’d have been in the driver’s seat to win the AFC North in Week 17. Had Antonio Brown’s stretch been a little short, maybe the Ravens would be coming off a division title.

It’s hard to ignore the warning signs, though.

Quarterback Joe Flacco is coming off a poor season. Running back Kenneth Dixon has been suspended for the first four games of this season. The Ravens lost right tackle Rick Wagner and fullback Kyle Juszczyk when they signed huge contracts elsewhere. Tight end Dennis Pitta was let go after another hip injury. They lost linebacker and leading tackler Zach Orr to an apparent retirement, until free agent Orr decided on a comeback and started visiting other teams.

There are holes on the roster. The skill-position groups are surprisingly thin, and even though Jeremy Maclin helps, he was cut in June by a Kansas City Chiefs team that isn’t exactly deep at receiver. The dropoff from Wagner to James Hurst (or whoever wins the right tackle job) will be steep. The pass rush wasn’t great last season and is still way too dependent on the great Terrell Suggs continuing to fight off an inevitable decline. He’ll be 35 years old in October.

This is a turning point for the Ravens. You can talk yourself into the Ravens being good again, because that’s the norm. Or perhaps a dip has already started, Flacco won’t be able to carry a talent-thin offense and the Ravens will miss the playoffs again. Even Harbaugh’s job security seems shakier than it ever has been, and perhaps huge changes will occur if there’s a losing season.

The Ravens have been a remarkably stable NFL franchise. We should see this year if they’re still in that group.

It’s hard to say it was a great offseason. You expect players to come and go in free agency, but linebacker Zach Orr’s retirement announcement was a blow. Steve Smith retired too, and even though that wasn’t a shock, he will be missed. The Ravens traded defensive lineman Timmy Jernigan and center Jeremy Zuttah. Rick Wagner and Kyle Juszczyk were made the highest-paid right tackle and fullback in the NFL by other teams. There were some positive moves, though. Re-signing nose tackle Brandon Williams was a must. Grabbing safety Tony Jefferson from the Arizona Cardinals was a smart move and adding cornerbacks Brandon Carr (free agent) and Marlon Humphrey (first-round pick) gives the Ravens great secondary depth. The Ravens desperately needed a receiver and Jeremy Maclin fell in their laps in June. Danny Woodhead can be a good contributor if he’s back from ACL surgery at age 32. The Ravens would benefit greatly if second-round pick Tyus Bowser or third-round pick Tim Williams help the pass rush right away. Still, a lot of talent left the building. Grade: D+

The Ravens should have one of the best secondaries in the NFL, and that’s crucial in a passing league. Safeties Eric Weddle and Tony Jefferson are both tremendous players. Brandon Carr, Jimmy Smith and Marlon Humphrey are a good trio of cornerbacks. Baltimore had one of the 10 best defenses in the NFL last season and it should be in that range again because of the secondary.

You still need to score points in the NFL, and I’m not sure who scores for the Ravens. Their running game was a mess last season, and Kenneth Dixon’s suspension doesn’t help. Dennis Pitta was by far the Ravens’ most reliable tight end, and he’s gone. Jeremy Maclin has had a good career, but he’s coming off an injury-plagued 536-yard season. The Ravens offense was poor last season, didn’t get much help for Joe Flacco this offseason and now will be relying on someone like Breshad Perriman or Crockett Gillmore to break out.

It’s fair to blame the talent around Joe Flacco. It’s also reasonable to assume Flacco was still recovering from a torn ACL suffered late in the 2015 season. But Flacco clearly wasn’t very good in 2016. He threw only 20 touchdowns on 672 attempts, the lowest percentage of his career. He averaged 6.4 yards per attempt, tied for the lowest of his career. The Ravens offense had a few ugly games, and Flacco was part of that. Since the offense lost more talent than it acquired, Baltimore is relying heavily on Flacco playing better.

The Ravens have a bunch of third- and fourth-year players they could use a breakout from, but receiver Breshad Perriman is the most important one on that list. Perriman was a first-round pick in 2015 but knee issues set him back. He didn’t play in 2015 and had just 499 yards last season. The talent is still there, but the Ravens signing Jeremy Maclin (and their reported interest in Eric Decker) says a lot about their trust level with Perriman. Perriman needs to produce soon or the Ravens will completely move on. And the Ravens could definitely use a talented, young No. 1 receiver. Perriman was drafted to fill that role, but time is running out.

The Ravens led the NFL with 679 passing attempts last season. In 2015, Baltimore’s 676 passing attempts were tops in the NFL. The Ravens would surely like more offensive balance, but it’s hard to see where it comes from. The running backs aren’t special, especially with Kenneth Dixon out four games due to a suspension, and the offensive line lost two starters including one of the better right tackles in the game. If the Ravens had an MVP-level quarterback and a great set of receivers, another 670 or so passing attempts would make sense. But that’s not the case, and Baltimore should not be leading the NFL in passing attempts again. Then again, the lack of a running game might not give them much choice.

IS NOSE TACKLE BRANDON WILLIAMS WORTH $52 MILLION?

The short answer: Yes. Williams signed a five-year, $52 million deal as he was set to become a free agent, and it was a smart investment. Williams is a load at 340 pounds, and he was the main reason Baltimore’s defense was fourth in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt allowed. Williams hasn’t offered much as a pass rusher, with just 4.5 sacks in four seasons, but that’s not his job. He stuffs the middle and allows the Ravens linebackers to make plenty of clean tackles.

The Ravens’ defense is very good, and that will keep them in most games. If Joe Flacco can bounce back, the Ravens should be right back in playoff contention, especially since they have an all-time great kicker in Justin Tucker to finish those close games. There’s a good reason this franchise has been so consistent. And don’t forget, the Ravens were really close to beating the Steelers, who everyone seems very excited about, for the AFC North title last season.

As good as the defense is, the pass rush is just OK and might really struggle if Terrell Suggs doesn’t have another productive season left. And even if the defense is good, the offense probably won’t be. There’s just not enough skill-position talent for the Ravens to find an effective run-pass balance or for Joe Flacco to throw 30-plus touchdowns. You could see a lot of 10-9 type losses and as crazy as it sounds, perhaps some calls for Harbaugh to get fired.

In Las Vegas, most sports books have the Ravens at either 8.5 or 9 wins. I don’t see them finishing over that mark. I like their secondary, especially their safeties, but I’m not sure where the offensive improvement comes from. It was a bad offense last year, then it lost some key parts and didn’t do much to replace them. I think the Ravens miss the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons.

The USMNT needs what Cristian Roldan brings to Seattle Sounders every week

Cristian Roldan should be on the United States men’s national team roster for this year’s Gold Cup. That’s a bold proclamation, but the youngster is already one of the best central midfielders in MLS. There are other young prospects with more hype, but they don’t have an MLS Cup victory or as much professional experience on their resumes. Roldan is more of an under-the-radar type, and his playing style is one that his coaches and teammates love.

He has an odd career arc. Roldan was a Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, but somehow went barely recruited by colleges. He then earned a Generation Adidas contract in MLS, leaving the University of Washington after just two seasons. That was followed by a draft day free fall to No. 16 overall, where the Seattle Sounders traded up to acquire a talent they knew better than anyone else. Now, in his third professional season, Roldan is the only member of head coach Brian Schmetzer’s ideal XI who doesn’t have senior national team experience. Roldan is just 21, but he should not have to wait too much longer.

In his rookie year, Roldan’s role was in question. The Sounders knew they needed him on the field, but their central midfield pairing was set — MLS best XI regular Osvaldo Alonso and experienced Mexican international Gonzalo Pineda. Then-head coach Sigi Schmid played him as a right midfielder, in the box-to-box role, and as a defensive mid. Now, in his third year, Cristian has a firm role on a side whose goal is to compete for trophies every single season.

It was Pineda, who by 23 had collected nearly 1,000 minutes repping El Tri, who mentored Roldan as a rookie. The veteran helped his eventual replacement learn the professional game and the role that suits Roldan best. Pineda is now Seattle’s assistant coach in charge of the attack.

There are other young prospects with more hype, but they don’t have an MLS Cup victory or as much professional experience on their resumes.

“I’m very curious about how he can perform with the national team,” Pineda told SB Nation. It is a sentiment shared by those who follow the Sounders. Roldan’s position, at its simplest, is as a central midfielder. He combines the primary skill sets of a defensive midfielder and an attacking one at the same time. What he offers the Sounders — and could offer the USA — is the tactical awareness and bite of their top defensive mids, while also adding strong passing in a possession game. His 105 passes against the bunkering New England Revolution on April 29 were a demonstration that Roldan knows his role is also about controlling tempo and possession.

His current mentors are Alonso and Nicolas Lodeiro. Alonso is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, while Lodeiro is the attacking midfielder who changed Seattle’s fortunes in 2017, taking them to MLS Cup.

Alonso is Cuba’s best player. Only his defection to, and now citizenship with, the United States keeps him from representing his home. He knows the Gold Cup — he was at one when he defected. He is fully confident that Roldan is ready for that level.

“He’s got great talent. He’s showing by the year here in Seattle he can play at a high level. He’s a great player. He can pass. He can dribble. He can score,” Alonso smiles when he talks about Roldan. “I would be very happy if he gets the opportunity to join the national team. It would be good for him.”

If the United States is serious about replacing the aging midfield of Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones, Dax McCarty, Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Kljestan, and others, the Gold Cup is probably the time to do so. MLS has several young talents that can play as the defensive mid or in a box-to-box role. Roldan, Tyler Adams, Ian Harkes, and Kellyn Acosta should all be on the shortlist to make the step up, but so far, Acosta is the only one of that group with a senior cap.

Gold Cups and January camps are the time to test those young talents. It’s the time to see if what they are doing in league play translates to the national team. And on current form, it’s getting harder to justify not giving Roldan his shot. Roldan is Jones with fresher legs and better passing range, Bradley with better defensive range, and McCarty with the ability to surge forward in attack.

But Pineda is cautious. Now a coach, he thinks like one, and thinks his young protégé still has work to do.

“He’s very smart tactically. We all know the effort that he puts in every single game. He runs for everyone. He covers. He fills a lot of gaps, but the most important thing is that he’s very smart tactically. I think he reads the game really good,” Pineda said. “I think if he can be a little cleaner on his passes and he can be thinking a little more about long passes, he’s doing that with Jordan [Morris], I think he’s doing better in that case, he’s getting better every day. I can see that, but he has to be better. This is because I can see the potential in Cristian. He can be better, but he has to improve in those qualities that are excellent for us and he continues to improve.”

Every member of the Sounders talks about three things when they speak of Roldan — his rapid improvement to key player on an MLS Cup winner, his ability to play at a higher level, and his hunger to get better.

Schmetzer makes that hunger most obvious.

“Last game his running was maybe a couple hundred meters less than Nico [Lodeiro],” Schmetzer said after a nil-nil draw with Atlanta United. “But his speed at which he ran was higher than Nico’s, and in a couple other categories he was higher than Nico and Nico is usually the guy that is top on those lists. Cristian was pretty fired about that so he asked our sports science department, Dave and Ravi and those guys [the analytics staff], for his stats from 2015, 2016, and up to day in 2017 to see how he compared in his rookie year, his sophomore season, and this year and how he’s formulating a plan so that the level he put himself at at the last game, how he stays there. It’s all on him. We don’t have to do it. He’s hungry to learn. He’s eager to learn. That was to me just another sign of being a good pro.”

Roldan is putting in that work. He is typically one of the last players to leave the training field. He works with Alonso and Lodeiro during the managed sessions and his age contemporaries like Morris, Sounders 2 players, and academy talents until forced to head to the lunch room or video room.

He knows he may have a U.S. national team future, and the players he studies, not just watches, are among the best.

“He’s hungry to learn. He’s eager to learn. That was to me just another sign of being a good pro.”

“I think when I watch Argentina and Uruguay and Paraguay and Brazil,” Roldan told SB Nation prior to the last international break. “I will look at Paulinho, Fernandinho, and [Javier] Mascherano, all these players that are in the big leagues. I will take a look at what they are doing because there’s a lot of different situations that they get put in but I like to critique and analyze them a bit more. I will definitely visualize certain players and try to put some of their qualities in my game.”

The statistical case for Roldan’s importance to Seattle is easy to make. He is among league leaders as a central midfielder in tackles, interceptions, crosses blocked, dribbles, keeping possession, passes, and accurate long balls. He is a true two-way player with incredible range.

Chris Henderson, former U.S. national team player and current Sounders vice president of soccer and sporting director, points out one of the significant issues facing Roldan: He’s eligible to represent the U.S., Guatemala, or El Salvador.

“I think Cristian has come on so strong in a pretty short period of time,” Henderson said. “He keeps improving. As an American I would love to see him with the American team. I know he’s eligible for two other countries, so for me I would prefer him to play for the U.S. as a former player.”

Roldan is following all of those teams. He last spoke with U.S. national team head coach Bruce Arena around the January camp, but did not get the call. Schmetzer regularly says that his conversations with Arena are about capping Roldan.

That call has yet to come. Roldan follows the situation with all three sides, and has friends playing for each nation, but eager U.S. national team fans can relax a bit. Guatemala is suspended from international play until July 2017, while El Salvador is going through coaching changes.

And his heart is clearly in Seattle. He adopted the region as a second home. Morris is his best friend, and his younger brother, Alex, is at Seattle U.

“I will definitely visualize certain players and try to put some of their qualities in my game.”

Pineda, despite his critiques, thinks that Roldan can become a regular with the full U.S. side. He also thinks that his experienced international training partners — like Lodeiro, Clint Dempsey, Chad Marshall, Alvaro Fernandez, and Roman Torres — will aid him in his improvement.

“I think that helps a lot, but also the most important thing about Cristian is that he’s hungry,” Pineda said. “He wants more. He always wants more. He’s always working on something else. Every single day he’s putting in 100 percent and that’s the best environment that he needs. What he shows, the way he tries to push himself every single day that’s the best environment that he needs. All of those guys — Dempsey, Nico, Ozzie, Roman Torres, Marshall are valuable. All of them help him, but the most important part is that he helps himself every single day.”

When Roldan helps himself, he helps the Seattle Sounders. In his two-plus seasons the team has never been worse than seventh in goals against. This 21-year-old is as much a part of the team’s success as the more famous players around him.

“When you have the ball you have more chance to score a goal, and a chance to finish the game,” Alonso explains. “I think Cristian, me, Nico, Clint, Jordy, we have success getting the ball and finding a way to score a goal.”

That’s as elite of company as a player can find in this league. Roldan is ready for the next test of his talent. It’s time for Bruce Arena to give him that test. Cristian Roldan will reward the United States coach with hard work in practice, incredible range, great tactical vision, and a mind hungry to learn.

He pulls back slightly from the kiss and looks deep into your eyes, more emotional than you’ve seen him before.
