#theorycomp tag#today i was like 'hm i love hypermetric wonkiniess as a storytelling inflection in us folk and adjacent genres' and started digging. and lo#specifically i found patterns of repeated 4's with a 3 at the end to signal stanzaic groupings; so like a stanza of 4-4-4-3 or 4-4-4-4-3#(musically - not necessarily in terms of the poetic scansion or spoken/sung metrical grouping of text)#in a few different folk or folk-inflecting songs. punch brothers crooked still even hozier nfwmb does that though he's not american#carol overreacts to music#carol overreacts to life#though maybe this isn't just a genre-specific thing. or is a tactic that ppl consciously extrapolate to other genres. idk#glass animals flip and black keys everlasting light also use an uneven hypermeter (4+2 or 2+4 respectively) to set off lyrical breaks#ik those are random examples but i've just been shuffling my library lol#then i'm also compiling a duple-triple metric ambiguity playlist but that's another thing#maybe i want to make a pop theory sideblog? maybe i want to sidestep into theory for a phd? these are not at all equivalent but who knows#obligatory 'i am not making a conjecture or statement bc this sample size is basically irrelevant'; i just think it's cool
