hi! co-signing the above. i'm not a kansas native but i lived in the south for many years previously, and i've lived in kansas for over a year now. it drives me nuts when people say kansas is a southern accent when they don't even sound alike.
there ARE kansas accents, but notably, only the people from smaller towns, and especially the central kansas and western kansas towns, tend to have them. but they're in short supply the last few generations, because by now the vast majority of kansans live in bigger cities on the easternmost sliver of the state. think topeka, lawrence, manhattan, and the kansas side of kansas city.
ma and pa would likely have slight accents, but as OP said, kon definitely wouldn't have one since he didn't spend his formative years in kansas. clark might have one since he did grow up in a small farming community, but... his profession is journalism. most journalists intentionally lose their accent, at least while being recorded, so that they will be as clear and precise to as many people as possible.
anyway. all this to say, if you want a reference, here's an example of a kansas accent from this small town ad (3.5K population). i've driven thru a few times and met a few people from there that generally had this accent. the men in the video are better examples, as one of the main women speaking says she's from elsewhere and i'm not 100% sure where, but the guy voices are a solid example. anyway a lot of kansans from small towns generally have a similar accent to this.
if you ever wanna know what people sound like from an area, i do recommend just finding a local small town ad, as many small towns are trying to stay alive and get people to move there.
okay, say it with me: kansas. is not. in the south. kansas. is in. the midwest. neither clark. nor kon. would have. a southern accent.
(and furthermore!!!!!!! kon probably would not pick up a full on accent from living in smallvile considering the fact he was *born* in metropolis, and before and after his stint in hawaii, spent a lot of time there. coming from someone who has moved around a lot, i may say a few words in a certain way, but i sound like where i came from mostly. like c’mon)
#also i am begging you guys to be normal about rural accents in general#knowing that most small towns have serious poverty... and that small towns tend to keep their accents more than cities.............#ask yourself: knowing the correlation between accents and poverty... are you just using an accent to make fun of poor people?#if so: stop it. get some help#anyway im just asking yall to choose not to type out your approximation of this accent. or any accent really.#typing out accents almost always comes across as making fun of them#id recommend instead (if you want to emphasize an accent) finding softer descriptors#like calling a minessota accent 'rounded at the os' or a new york accent sharp and fast#ive noticed a lot of kansans tend to murmur or talk softer than most places ive been to. and a bit flatter all together.#maybe fewer and more drawn out at the vowels too?#when in doubt of how to describe an an accent respectfully: you dont have to describe it at all. just say they have one#anyway! thank u op i love u op
