A heartbreaking, but very fun to RP and write, argument between Rook and the party wizard after finding out that Rook's beloved mentor was actually a corpse being controlled by the BBEG, and the wizard knew the whole time. Oh, and just seconds after watching the wizard violently "murder" said mentor. Like, tear into him with his bare claws and teeth, and then shatter all his bones with a sonic shock wave. :)
(for a bit of context, Kroko was the island where Rook got possessed and very narrowly killed Maka. He only survived because the archfey inhabiting his body intervened.)
[as per usual, transcript under the cut]
Rook turned aside and vomited, collapsing to his knees. The world around him blurred. He was vaguely aware of the others moving in the distance, talking in quiet voices. His breath came in heaving pants as he tried to grip onto the rough stone floor.
Footsteps, and a figure appeared at his side. “Are you okay?”
Maka. Rage flooded Rook’s mind. Without turning to look at him, he spat “Get the fuck away from me.” His voice came out broken and rough.
Maka ignored him and pushed ahead. “Rook, I’m sorry if my actions of keeping quiet has hurt you. But I did it because I didn’t want to get us killed. I wanted all of us to stay alive. The more time he was with us, the less time the Children were being our enemies.”
As Maka spoke, rage built up Rook’s body. Hot, white, blinding rage that filled his vision and mind until he couldn’t think of anything else. He hated Maka, perhaps more than he had ever hated anyone in his life.
Drawing his rapier, he turned to face him. “The more time he was with us. The more time he was with us?” Rook spat the words, venom filling his voice. “So you were just going to let that happen. To let Dr.-” His voice broke, but he plunged onwards. “To let him spend time with us. To let him spend time with me.”
Maka raised his hands. “I didn’t want us to die. Any of us.”
“You could have gotten rid of him. Told him to leave. Told us the truth.”
“And if I had? The Children would have been our enemies. Would have killed us.”
Rook shook his head. “You should have told us the truth.” He took a few steps forwards, driving Maka back with his rapier. “You hid that from us. That he was-” Again, his voice caught in his throat, unable to say the damning words. “You should have told me.”
“I wanted to protect you. All of you.”Rook cut him off, pushing him back further with his rapier. “You call that protecting us? You call this protecting us?” He spat at Maka’s feet. “Fuck you. I wish you’d died back on Kroko.”
#this is a few months old but I'm still really happy with it. The dialogue is as close to verbatim as I could get it from the session.#it's the fact that Rook can't even say ''Sigmar'''s true identity (Dr. Purity) out loud. He's been given undeniable proof but he still can'#make himself say that damning name.#morrigan.text#my writing#morrigan plays dnd#oc: Rook#campaign: the vanguard#campaign: black desert#dnd writing#for those of you who follow my main blog (thinking of two of you in particular) this conversation and the reveal that preceded it are the#inspiration and reason behind the checkmate render. Because Rook felt (with good reason) that he was being used as a piece in Maka's game.#and insanely enough earlier in the campaign Maka beat ''Simgar'' in a game of chess (based on dice rolls) and his played specifically#narrated that he used the rook piece to take ''Sigmar'''s king. Which is where the idea for the checkmate render came from.#I feel like I missed an opportunity to describe the blood that was definitely soaking every inch of Maka during this conversation.#Rook's mentor's blood to be specific.#maybe I'll include that if I ever come back and edit or rewrite this scene.
