Why are social games so popular?

Social games are all the rage these days but what makes them so popular. They can be simple, complex or something that people do in their spare time but are very addicting, so why can’t people stop?

Players can broadcast their scores and achievements on social media, which can help introduce competitiveness amongst their friends and gamers in the virtual world. People are very curious about social games and can be invited by their peers or pressured into playing the games via social media (Data Genetics 2013).

Most online games involve more than one player which requires maintenance and subscriptions. Facebook has the largest online gaming market with 61% of its users playing games on their site. The top three games on Facebook at the moment are FarmVille, Mafia Wars and Bejewelled Blitz (Data Genetics 2013).

One reason why social gaming is more popular than physical games can be narrowed down to mobility. Games can be downloaded on people’s phone which allow them to play whilst on the move (Glenn 2012).

Other reasons include it can be a great stress reliever, mental stimulation, social interaction and can be used for relaxation. It must be working because the statistics show that 510 million people in the world play social games either on their tablet, computer or on their smartphone, with over 81 million people at least once a day (Glenn 2012).
