Frequently adding salt to foods was associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in a new study. People at risk for type 2 diabetes may already know to avoid sugar, but the study suggests they may want to skip the salt as well. The study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings surveyed more than 400,000 adults registered in the UK Biobank about their salt intake. Over a median of 11.8 years of follow-up, more than 13,000 cases of type 2 diabetes developed among participants. Compared to those who “never” or “rarely” used salt, participants who “sometimes,” “usually,” or “always” added salt had a respective 13%, 20%, and 39% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. “We already know that limiting salt can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension, but this study shows for the first time that taking the saltshaker off the table can help prevent type 2 diabetes as well,” says lead author Lu Qi, professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Which UK Intake is Best for International Students?
Tumblr media
When planning to study abroad, one of the most crucial decisions an international student must make is choosing the right intake. For students looking to pursue higher education in the UK, understanding the UK university intakes is essential for ensuring they are on track to start their academic journey without delays. The UK follows a few key intakes throughout the year, each with its own set of advantages. But how do you determine which intake is the best for you?
Understanding the UK Intakes
The academic year in the UK generally follows three main intakes: Autumn, Spring, and Summer. Each intake comes with its own unique timeline and requirements. Let’s explore the different intakes and which one could be best suited for international students.
1. The September (Autumn) Intake
The September intake, often called the Autumn intake, is the primary intake for most universities in the UK. It is the most popular intake and offers the most extensive variety of courses. The intake typically begins in late September or early October and runs through the year until summer. Most international students prefer this intake because it allows them to start their academic journey alongside the majority of UK and international students, making it easier to settle in and network.
Why choose the September intake?
Variety of Courses: With the highest number of programs available, you’ll have the most options.
Settling In: This intake coincides with the start of the academic year, giving you time to get adjusted to university life.
Social Opportunities: You can meet new people from all over the world, build a network, and explore extracurricular activities.
However, students opting for this intake need to ensure they apply well in advance since the deadlines for applications are typically around May-June, and many competitive courses may require earlier application submissions.
2. The January (Winter) Intake
The January intake, or Winter intake, is a popular option for international students who missed the September intake or those looking for a more flexible start date. It typically begins in January and is available for various postgraduate programs and a few undergraduate courses, depending on the university.
Why choose the January intake?
Limited Availability of Courses: Fewer programs are available compared to the September intake, but there are still a good number of postgraduate courses in areas such as business, engineering, and IT.
Mid-Academic Year Start: You’ll join the university at the start of the second term, making it easier to catch up with peers.
Less Competitive: Fewer students apply for the January intake, which may increase your chances of admission to some programs.
This intake also provides students more time to organize their documentation and finances, but keep in mind that university facilities may be quieter at the start of the year.
3. The Summer Intake
The Summer intake is the least common intake and is usually for students pursuing shorter or more specific programs, such as language courses, foundation programs, or certain specialized postgraduate diplomas. These courses typically begin in late May or June and run for a few months, making them a great option for students who want to study a condensed program or are looking to gain specific skills in a short amount of time.
Why choose the Summer intake?
Short Duration: Ideal for students who want to complete a short program, such as a foundation course or an internship.
Less Intense: Since the Summer intake doesn’t coincide with the main academic year, it can be a less stressful entry point.
However, options for degree-level programs during the Summer intake are limited, and students may miss out on a more typical university experience.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing an Intake
Course Availability: The September intake offers the most comprehensive course options, followed by the January intake.
Application Deadlines: Keep track of the application deadlines to ensure you don’t miss your preferred intake. For the September intake, deadlines may fall in May-June, while the January intake deadlines can be around October-November.
Visa Process: The visa process can take time, and the September intake often has a longer visa processing window, allowing you more time to prepare your documents.
Personal and Academic Goals: Consider your personal situation, including your readiness for university life and whether you prefer starting with a larger or smaller group of students.
To stay updated on the upcoming intakes in the UK and apply for your desired course, check the official guidelines from universities or visit resources like MSM Unify’s Upcoming Intakes UK page.
Conclusion
For most international students, the September intake is the best option due to the wide variety of courses, the start of the academic year, and more opportunities to settle into university life. However, the January intake offers a great alternative for students looking for flexibility or who missed the earlier deadlines. Lastly, the Summer intake is ideal for shorter programs or students who want to focus on a specific area of study.
Ultimately, the best intake for you depends on your academic goals, the course you wish to pursue, and your personal circumstances. Regardless of which intake you choose, ensure you apply well ahead of time to avoid last-minute stress.

đź“‹ Understanding Scholarships for Studying Abroad
Scholarships are financial aids awarded to students based on various criteria such as academic excellence, financial need, leadership, or extracurricular achievements. They can be fully funded (covering tuition, accommodation, and other expenses) or partially funded (covering specific costs).
đź“ť Application Tips for Success
Research Extensively Start by identifying the scholarships available for your desired destination, course, or university. Websites like DAAD (for Germany), Chevening (for the UK), and Fulbright (for the USA) are excellent starting points. Additionally, many universities have their own scholarships for international students.
Tailor Your Application A generic application won’t stand out. Customize your scholarship application to reflect the goals of the funding organization. Highlight how their values align with your aspirations.
Craft a Strong Personal Statement Your personal statement is a chance to tell your story. Discuss your academic achievements, career goals, and how the scholarship will help you make an impact. Be honest, authentic, and specific.
Gather Strong Recommendations Letters of recommendation from professors, employers, or mentors can strengthen your application. Choose people who know you well and can vouch for your skills, work ethic, and character.
Stay Organized Create a spreadsheet to track application deadlines, required documents, and submission statuses. Missing a deadline can cost you an opportunity.
đź“Ś Meeting the Requirements
Every scholarship has its own set of eligibility criteria and application requirements. Some common ones include:
Academic Transcripts: Proof of your academic performance.
Proof of Enrollment: A letter from your current or intended institution.
Language Proficiency Scores: Tests like IELTS or TOEFL may be required for non-native English speakers.
Financial Statements: Some scholarships require proof of financial need.
Research Proposals: For graduate or PhD students, a detailed research proposal may be necessary.
Ensure that you carefully read the instructions for each scholarship to provide the correct documents.

The French Education System: What Indian Students Should Know
Tumblr media
France has long been a global hub for culture, art, and history, and now, it’s becoming one of the top destinations for international students. With its renowned universities, rich cultural heritage, and welcoming environment, France offers a unique blend of academic excellence and personal growth. For Indian students, studying in France presents an affordable yet high-quality education option that stands out among other popular study destinations like the US or UK.
Why Choose France for Your Education?
Affordable Tuition Fees Compared to countries like the US and UK, France offers significantly lower tuition fees, particularly in public universities. With tuition fees ranging from €200 to €3,000 per year, it’s an excellent choice for students who want quality education without the hefty price tag. For Indian students, a budget of 12-18 lakh INR is generally sufficient for tuition, living expenses, and other costs, making France an accessible option.
English-Taught Programs Over the past few years, France has made tremendous strides in offering programs in English. With more than 1,700 courses available in English at the Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. levels, students from non-French speaking countries can easily find suitable academic programs. Whether you’re pursuing business, engineering, or the arts, there’s a course for you in France.
Post-Study Work Opportunities France’s post-study work visa (APS - Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour) allows international students to stay for up to two years after graduation to search for work. This opportunity to gain professional experience in the country can help students build valuable networks and launch their careers.
Part-Time Work International students are allowed to work part-time (up to 964 hours per year) while studying in France. This not only helps students manage living expenses but also provides a chance to gain practical experience and improve language skills.
Scholarships for International Students
France offers numerous scholarships for international students based on academic merit and financial need. Scholarships can cover partial or full tuition fees, and there are specific scholarships available for MBA courses, with some offering up to 50% tuition fee coverage. Students with good academic records, strong standardized exam scores, and notable extracurricular achievements are more likely to qualify for these opportunities. Be sure to apply early to increase your chances of securing a scholarship.
No IELTS? No Problem!
One of the most attractive features of studying in France is that many universities do not require IELTS for admission. Instead, a Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate from your previous educational institution may suffice as proof of your English proficiency. This flexibility makes France an even more appealing option for students who may not have taken or excelled in standardized tests like IELTS.
Intake and Admission Process
France has two main intakes: Spring and Fall. This gives students flexibility in choosing when to start their studies. The admission process is straightforward, usually involving two interviews: an admit interview and a final interview. If you qualify in the admit interview, you’ll receive an offer letter from the university, bringing you one step closer to starting your journey in France.
A Rich Cultural Experience
Beyond academics, France offers a vibrant cultural scene. From world-class art museums and historical landmarks to the food, fashion, and festivals, studying in France is not just about gaining a degree—it’s about immersing yourself in a diverse and exciting environment that will enrich your personal and professional life.
Studying in France offers numerous advantages, including affordable tuition fees, scholarships, English-taught programs, and excellent post-study work opportunities. With a welcoming environment and a rich cultural heritage, France is an ideal destination for students who want to grow academically and professionally. Whether you're planning to pursue your undergraduate degree or advance your career through a master’s program, France provides the resources and support you need for a successful academic journey.
