I'm back to wrap up this 6/5 doubleheader!
Yesterday I wrote a bit about the 6/5 in general and a lot about the "Thatch" in particular, but now I'm going to focus on what is arguably the centerpiece of the show, a great version of Goose's "Red Bird" paired with one of my favorite covers of theirs: the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." Though any version of "Tomorrow Never Knows" that's longer than four or so minutes is, I guess, technically "jammed out," this is the first version the band has played in my memory that really gets out there. It may have even replaced my previous favorite version, which the band played at Radio City Music Hall with both Trey Anastasio and Father John Misty sitting in. That one wasn't really jammed at all, but, I mean, come on.
Anyway, I wrote about the "Red Bird" from the '24 Cap run previously, so I'm just going to jump right into the music this time.
I love any and all versions of "Red Bird," but especially ones where I listen on my fancy studio monitor headphones and hear Trevor clearly in the mix!
The jam starts here at 5:05, right after another iteration of the layered-vocals outro. As is pretty typical, it starts with Rick soloing over the outro's chords, reprising the song's vocal melody here and there. Then he smashes a chord at 6:45 that feels like a signal to the rest of the band to Get Weird.
I hear Trevor out front here initially, with Peter coming in pretty quickly with a repeating motif on the piano. This initially feels like a very Ted Tapes 2024-ish space, the kind that the band has been so good about exploring patiently and to great effect so far in 2024.
There's some really solid interplay between all three of the melody players in the band starting around the 8:00 mark.
Rick's playing starts to dominate the mix a bit more starting at 9:30 or so, but the jam continues to feel collaborative rather than "solo"-focused. Trevor's tone here sounds reverb-y as all hell, almost to the point where it seems like you're feeling it instead of hearing it (though, technically speaking, I suppose you're doing both).
By the 12:00 mark, Rick has fully taken the lead, though Cotter has moved from more or less holding down the beat to flying all over the kit, which makes this jam feel even more dynamic.
While I'm listening: the lights are on point for this jam as well. They aren't as integral to a Goose performance for me as they might be for, say, Phish, but when they're on, they're on.
Anyway, the initial jam space finally gets built up a boil around 14:00, leading to a big guitar peak at 14:15 and from there we're in bread-and-butter Goose territory, albeit with Trevor still ripping away in the back of my headphones.
At 15:20, Rick introduces a bit of chaos to the proceedings and the rest of the band follows along. I said something similar in my "Thatch" write-up from yesterday, but this is the kind of move that the band has historically used to (you guessed it) build a lot of tension over thirty seconds or a minute so that they can then return to balls-out rocking with another peak. I don't not like that, but it can sometimes feel a bit repetitive when they fall back on it, say, five or six times in one show. In my listening so far in 2024, one thing that feels like a positive change is their willingness to let these spaces breathe more, rather than just using them as transitions or shortcuts to another guitar peak.
In this particular case, I was fully expecting them to drop back into rock-and-roll mode around 15:45, but instead, Rick takes a left turn and the band slows and quiets down into a really great, mellow space. Cotter is fantastic here as they're easing into it. Also, Rick's tone at 16:50 is pretty amazing. Peter's chording and Trevor's bass bombs are just the icing on the cake.
I'm obviously just projecting here based on my experience listening to the band since I don't actually know the guy, but I also feel like the band's new willingness to hang out longer in and explore these mellow spaces has made Rick better at playing sparsely but melodically. Clearly, the guy can fucking shred and I've also always though he's great at playing rhythm and/or adding touches when Peter or Trevor is leading a jam. But sometimes when things get slower and/or quieter and he's driving, it can feel like he's not quite sure what to do, like he gets kind of uncomfortable and then suddenly we're back to shredding to get out of the situation.
I bring that up, though, because his playing here is gorgeous and I kinda want to just hang out in these few minutes of this jam for a few hours. It feels a lot like Trey's playing on some of my favorite late 90s and early 00s jams, but not in a derivative way, just an evocative one.
Sadly, the band doesn't hang out in this space for an hour, but only for a few minutes: by the 20:00 mark, Cotter's added some swing to the beat and the energy starts building again.
I do appreciate that Rick continues his minimalist playing until around 21:30, when it feels like everyone sort of collective hits a new groove. Trevor really starts crushing it here for a bit, too.
Cotter starts to speed things up more at 22:40, and there is (I think?) a key change to get the band into the right key for "Tomorrow Never Knows." The drawn-out transition here is pretty fantastic, though. When I watched this show initially, I thought that the band had just discovered a new, awesome gear here. In reality, of course, they're "just" intentionally moving into a second, composed song. But it happens to be one of my personal favorites, so I'm okay with that.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" starts properly at 24:30, after a great, slow transition. Cotter's drumming here even during the composed part of the song is unhinged, and Rick's octave-shifted solo(s) ain't bad either.
The band moves from the song to the jam at 27:05, but like with "Red Bird," we get a bit of an outro solo initially before we drop into the meat of the improvisation at 28:45. We get a brief space here where Rick and Peter's melodies are overlapping and intertwining with on another in a really cool way, and then somehow at 29:28, Rick and Cotter both change tacks at exactly the same time into something that can only be described as...space blues?! Quickly on the heels of this change, Peter starts laying down a piano riff that sounds a lot like (but isn't quite) the "Welcome To Delta" riff. By 30:35, it has fully become a "Welcome To Delta" jam. This transition sends the entire band to Groove City for awhile, and it is a fun trip.
Once again, lights is crazy.
Okay, apparently when I wrote "for awhile," what I meant was "for the rest of the entire jam." Whew!
Well...technically not the entire jam: Cotter gets a neat little spotlight/almost-solo near the end, starting at about 37:30, then the rest of the band piles back on for a big finish.
Lots of different facets of the bird band in this one!
My basement is completely destroyed right now thanks to some emergency repairs/renovations, but I'm hoping to be able to keep watching at least a few shows while the work is happening, so I'll keep the videos coming.
Up next is "Jive Lee" (newly a pretty monstrous jam vehicle, believe it or not!) from Fiddler's Green on 6/7! It's a fun one!

1st Album Review
Firstly, Hi! This is my first album review. I'm very excited to get to do this since music is something I really enjoy and I love to talk about it and analyze lyrics (I do take a look on Genius to see what other people, who may know more about the singer and their lyrics to see what they have to say about the song and lyrics.). With that being said, these are all MY personal opinions. Please do not attack me if you do not feel the same. But I am open to hear your opinions in the comments (please be nice and respectful about it). And please be respectful to others too. Anyway, that's it. Please enjoy!!! <3
“Scaled and Icy” By Twenty One Pilots
Release date: Friday May 21st, 2021
Genre: Like a mix of rock, rap and pop.
Tracks-
Good Day: I think this was a good song to open the album with. It has a very upbeat and catchy tune, along with the lyrics. But with that being said, it is definitely different from their past style. But I will go more in depth with that later. Overall for this song I do quite like it, and it seems like something I would play to make myself happier or even just for fun with friends. I give this song a 7.5/10
Choker: This was their second single that they dropped before the album was released. This song's lyrics seem to give off more vibes from their past albums. Mostly “Vessel”. The lyrics that seem to try and sort of hide the pain but also show it in different ways, “Self-sabotage is a sweet romance. Seems like all I'm worth is what I'm able to withstand. Sooner I can realize that pain is the middleman.” These lyrics hit at pain, but hide it with the very upbeat and catchy tune. I give this song 8/10
Shy Away: The first single released before the album. Again sort of like “choker”, these lyrics seem to have vibes or a similar writing style from their past albums. “Shy Away” seems to be about self acceptance. Don't be afraid to be yourself, don't hide the person you are or who you want to be, “Don't you Shy away”. Through the song, the character or person that they may be singing to has a change. In verse two it says, “When you get home. You barely recognize the pictures, they put in a frame.” Sort of showing that you can't find your true self, or can't even see it. Then in verse three it switches, “When I get home. Boy, you better not be there. You're long gone” Now, I think this can mean two different things. Either that their “true self” is gone and that they cant find it or keep pushing it away because they are too scared to be their true self. Or that their old self is gone. They finally shed their skin (“And leave your skin on the floor”) and found themselves and they are able to be themselves. I think that because I really love the meanings and the message behind the lyrics, I'll give this song a 9/10.
The Outside: Again, the beat is very, very catchy. That's the main vibe I get from the album so far. This seems like the first song that really brings out the sort of rap style in different parts of the songs that we saw a lot in their past albums. Though the beat is catchy and so are the lyrics, I’m not a huge fan of this song in particular, 6/10.
Saturday: Their third, and final single (As of 5/21/21). Okay. . .so the beginning sounds like a song they would use on an “Old Navy” commercial. Buuuutttttttt I will say that this song's lyrics are actually quite cool. The chorus seems to align with an old song of theirs, “Migraine” from their 2013 album “Vessel”. “Slow down on Monday. Not a sound on Wednesday. Might get loud, on Friday. But on Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, we paint the town.” I think that the way they describe the days could correlate with the lyrics from Migraine, “Thank God it's Friday, Cause Fridays will always be better than Sundays, Cause Sunday's are my suicide days.” Either saying how, over the time they have gotten better, their days have changed and no longer feel the way they did. I give this a 8/10, mostly for the lyrics and how it may align with their past song.
Never Take It: This song is calling out to everyone. How people are fighting back, fighting to know the truth about our world. Speaking on how people profit off of lies and separating the world from each other. I think this song has a great underlying message. 9/10
Mulberry Street: Fun Fact- Mulberry is actually a real place in New York. This song is like, when you're feeling out of place. You're different and “Everyone relies on synthetic highs” to sort of deal with that, to deal with not having control over everything. I actually really love this one, the beat and the instruments actually feel like “a synthetic high”, it makes me feel light and airy. I love it, 10/10.
Formidable: This song was written by Tyler and is very close to him since it is about his daughter Rosie. With this being said, I’m not going to diss this song because it is something close to him. Plus I think it's a great song and makes me feel happy and like everyone deserves love. 10/10
Bounce Man: Like a man running from maybe his life or trying to find a new life. They are happy and their friends are begging them to come back home. But his friends are trying to know if he is okay while trying to search for him or giving him reasons to bounce back to them. Like almost all of the songs on the album, I truly just adore the beat of the songs, 7/10.
No Chances: This song gives me so many vibes that take me back to their “Trench” album and era Sort of a dark, twisted beat with lyrics that make you feel like people are after you. 9/10, because I love the way it gives me “Trench” vibes.
Redecorate: This song ends the story. But it actually tells a story of the story in the album. . .does that make sense? Through the album we hear a story of this person who seems to be running in circles trying to find themself, to try and be a better person. In the end they find a way that they can change their life, using the metaphor, “Should I keep it on display? Or redecorate?” 10/10
Recap: Going into this album review, I was scared that I wouldn't like it that much. Since I, and many others, were so used to their old style of music, this was a big change. But with the big change there is a lot of good that comes from it. With this album, Tyler and Josh both seem much happier, like they are in a better head space. And I am so thankful for that, because even though they gave us great music in the past, they really were not in the best head space. I feel like many people have pushed away from “Scaled and Icy” because of the change. But I would much rather Tyler and Josh to give us a different style of music, than to stay how they were. I can't express how proud I am of the both of them, not only for getting help but for fighting through what they did. And for giving us a great album that we can cherish. It is truly amazing.
I love the story that comes with the lyrics, how it shows that even if you're an “outcast” you can still be amazing and push through. You can still become the person you achieve to be. Some songs in the album have a truly great message behind them, and I think that's import. Since many people these days spend forever idolizing their idols or favorite band, they look up to them and it makes a huge part of who they are. So I find it important that artists speak on issues in today's society and pledge for a better life in the world we live in.
My final rating. . .8.5/10.

It worked! Sorry to bug you with a message! But I'd like to request a cake now!
So, about me. I have an actual name but I don't think I've heard it in months😃, instead I have a bunch of nicknames! (Rion, ri, oreo, onion, o, etc), I'm actually nb so I chose that name, however I 100% consider naming myself Arson💀My pronouns are they/them and I'm about 5'5, I have short, fluffy brown hair that I usually dye the front blue. I'm Asian hispanic, but I really don't look like either- my favorite foods are either really spicy and salty or sweet. Not the overwhelming chemical sweet tho, like a natural sweet flavor. My personality type is infp, and ig when I first meet people I can be shy (that's an understatement, I was mute for the first week of school🕳🏃‍♂️) but once I get to know people I can be pretty chaotic (once again, arson). I'm not a 100% demon spawn though, I don't really like making scenes in public and I probably will cry if I do- but I still have fun lol. I'm also the person who copes with severe mental health issues using humor, to an alarming degree 😔 I'm the therapist friend when really I'm the one who needs therapy. I also have a social battery that can die at random times, so I really like/need friends who can handle random mood changes of me going from energetic to silent in seconds. Academically, I'm really book smart, I'm a tutor, but my grades don't reflect it. I tend to procrastinate a lot and avoid studying, usually I catch myself last minute or trust memory on tests, but every now and then there's something that tanks my grades. I'm not very athletic, but I still try to play sports. I enjoy the feeling when I do something right, but the rest of the time I usually beat myself up for messing up.
And now just random facts 😃👍
My favorite color is yellow, not the bright eye sore shade that makes you want to throw up, but the nice softer, light shade. And I like anything that comes with that color! (Sunflowers, flowy sundresses and flip flops, summer activities, burning concrete, warm rain, etc). Nobody knows my music taste, it changes weekly, however I usually come back to mitski/cavetown or summer themed songs a lot! I enjoy playing music, but I have the curse of being a fast learner so that usually leads to be being bored and learning a new instrument at any given chance. And my birthday is a weird date that fucks with zodiacs so I can be considered either a leo or cancer, my personality changes a bunch, so take your pick lol. (Though emotionally I tend to be cancerous, I just express it and show it in a way a leo would) And someday I wanna be a long term traveler, or a florist. Just a job that makes me happy :). And I guess if I had to classify my aesthetic it would be bloomcore or soft grunge. I like wearing big sweaters and if I could I would wear a bunch of butterfly clips in my hair and wear mom jeans. (I would also wear man crushers, I mean, platforms if I was confident)
Aaaannnnd that was really long sorry!
To sum up, I'm just a bipolar bitch with depression and anxiety 👍
Thanks a bunch for just taking the time to read this!

Ok so I just Hc that Bokuto LOVES flowers
So he would always just go to the local flower shop to look at them
Pls hes to precious I cant-
But anyways you we’re working a summer job at the flower shop
And you grew fond of our little owl boy
You would always talk to him whenever he visited
He just made your job that much more enjoyable :)
So one day you stopped him right before he left and told him he could pick a bouquet of flowers if he wanted
He BEAMED at you and picked a bouquet of flowers he always looked at whenever he came
But what shocked you was instead of walking out with them
He gave them to you!
He then went on talking about how he really liked you but didn’t know how to tell you
At this point he was just rambling
So you laughed and asked him if he would like to go to the ocean with you after your shift
He agreed and you swear you saw stars in his eyes
After your shift you met up with Bokuto and went to the beach
You guys literally spent ALL day there!
And even some of the night 👀
Being the gentleman he is offered to walk you home
And when you two got to your house he asked you to be his s/o
What They Love About You
Ok starting off with a strange one
He loves the fact that your favorite color is yellow 💛
He just thinks it fits you so well 😊
He loves that you have to ability to turn your trauma into humor

He LOVES your aesthetic!
He thinks it’s so cute
And once again he thinks it fits you 👀
He appreciates the fact that your smart

Winter - Snowball fights/Making Snowmen, Christmas movie marathons, hot cocoa/ baking, etc
Spring - Dancing in the rain, picnics, gardening etc
It’s a vibe year round with bf Bokuto
Random Hc
His favorite season is summer
And his second is winter
Ik...polar opposites
Oof
He TOTALLY gets your mood swings
Although they may not be the same as his
He still understands them and respects them
Every year on your anniversary he buys you the exact same bouquet he gave you at the flower shop
Speaking of the flower shop 👀
He got a job there with you the following summer
So you guys basically spent most of your days together
Bokuto is REALLY bad at dark humor
But for some reason he still tries 😭
It’s either TOO dark
Or not dark at all 💀
Astrology
(We’re gonna go with your cancer zodiac 😂)
When Cancer and Virgo make a love match, a strong, down-to-earth relationship with staying power is the happy result.
This is a relationship with great potential to get better and better over the passing years.
Both Cancer and Virgo are goal-oriented and disciplined.
They are sincere and devoted to one another and share a strong sense of purpose.
No lightweight love here: These two were not really built for flings!
Cancer and Virgo deeply admire one another: Virgo respects Cancer’s quiet strength and dedication while Cancer appreciates Virgo’s keen adaptability and intelligence.
These lovers may get off to a slow start, but over time, bonds will only grow stronger.
The Cancer-Virgo love match prides itself on common sense and strong principles over fluff and inconsequential or fleeting connections.
They enjoy the material comforts of life, but they will only feel good about their bounty if it has come as a result of honest hard work.
There could be tiffs if Virgo becomes too critical for Cancer’s easily bruised feelings; Cancer needs to understand that it’s just Virgo’s nature to point out what they observe, that it’s not a personal attack.
A Virgo may bristle at their Cancer mate’s stubborn streak, but it’s a trait that a patient and understanding love partner like Virgo could come to appreciate.
Also, Virgo’s urge to serve suits Cancer’s affectionate, nurturing nature well.
Their dedication to working toward the same goals.
Both partners in this love match enjoy a stable home life and nice things, and Virgo truly enjoys helping Cancer along the way to achieving their goals.
Their shared goals and desires make theirs a highly compatible love match.
