Oh boy, I get to share my con story! Okay here goes.
September 9th, 2001. The Alexis Park Hotel in Vegas, site of Slanted Fedora's 35th anniversary Trek con. It was their attempt at "let's celebrate the four series and 35 years of Star Trek!" (ENT didn't exist yet) and they tried to pull out all the stops. All four casts invited, shit ton of guest stars. All the things possible.
Sunday was DS9 Day for the Q and A Hall. It was also the day the room's AC died. Hotel staff brought some big portable units/fans for the cast onstage. The rest of us sufficed with wet kerchiefs, fanning your seatmate with your program, whatever.
L to R onstage for DS9 Day: Nicole deBoer, Siddig, Andrew Robinson, Nana, Cirroc Lofton, Aron Eisenberg, Max Grodenchick, James Darren, and I'm pretty sure Casey Biggs and Armin were there as well. Each of them had a cordless mic and a bottle of water. Some held their water the whole time; others set it on the floor unless they wanted a drink. (Remember this for later.)
The cast took turns calling on audience members, and this was back when if they called you and you were in row 30, you had to holler to be heard 😂 there were no helpful con staffers with cordless mics running to the lucky person that got picked LOL.
One thing I noticed about Siddig was if someone had a question for him, he tended to focus on that person and give them his full attention, even if they were way back in row 30.
About two hours in, every other audience member who got picked seemed to have a question for Sid (or Sid and someone else), which left the others to chat quietly amongst themselves...or fool around. Cue a brief water bottle duel between Cirroc and Aron til Nana went Mama Nana on them and bopped Cirroc on the knee to get them to stop haha.)
Meanwhile the questions had come back to Nicole deBoer, then Sid's turn to choose a questioner came again. Someone in the third row right in front of him asked him a question....
And he proceeded to mix up which hand had the mic in it....and talk into his water bottle.
Luckily, the mic still picked up most of what he was saying because apparently it was close enough? But half the room was snickering helplessly by this point, while others in the first six rows tried and failed to get his attention without looking too rude. Two full minutes passed before some dude in the first row's "Mr. Siddig, wrong hand!" finally got Sid's attention partway.
Sid: "I'm sorry?"
Nicole deBoer backhands him on the arm. "Talk into the mic, not the bottle!"
Needless to say, the whole room EXPLODED in laughter. And it took at least a good five minutes for everyone to recover so things could continue on. 😂😂😂😂
My absolute favorite Alexander Siddig story - and oh boy I have a lot of favorites - is that one day he noticed everyone on the DS9 set was suddenly asking him these weird very carefully phrased gentle questions like hey buddy, how you doing? you feeling alright? Can we get you anything? you know you can always come to us for help if you need it and he was like wtf why is everyone being weird and it turned out that he had been showing up to set late and generally looking tired and the whole crew thought he had gotten into hard drugs but in reality what he was doing was staying up till 4 AM every night playing Ultima Online
