Oooooueeeee fam, have I got some news for you!!! Two weeks ago, I started working at @mauiyogashala and I am soooo thankful / happy to be teaching yoga in a studio again. ππ³ββοΈπ I am teaching 6 yoga classes a week right now and adding more fitness based classes soon. On top of teaching yoga, my 8 week group fitness and nutrition program has been keeping me on my toes! The group engagement has been phenomenal and the feedback has been equally as awesome. ππͺ I pulled back from social media a bit to allow for balance in my schedule, but I'm starting to adjust my routine. Strength training has decreased quite a bit to make room for the multiple yoga classes per day, but I am still getting some super sweaty grunt sessions in each week. ππ This workout was after a hot flow class I taught and before an Iyengar yoga class I was taking so I tried to get as much bang for my buck as I could in the time I had. This brings me to the snatch + reverse lunge combo. πͺπ This was my first attempt at this exercise, and I am really liking it. This is a great (and definitely more challenging) progression to the single arm snatch. The opposite leg steps back while the weight is in transition, so you land in the reverse lunge at about the same time you catch the weight overhead. π€π The stability challenge is a lot greater and it adds work for the legs too, so definitely a great full body choice to throw in the roto if you're looking to get upper back and delts with some core and legs all at the same time. I was doing sets of 6 with a 35lb DB for my first time and it felt just heavy enough to create a good stimulus but light enough for me to keep practicing form. π Main point is you don't need a ton of time of equipment to build the body of your dreams. Research shows deep belly breathing in a calm / relaxed state downregulates the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight, adrenaline and cortisol, run from a tiger) upregulates the parasympathetic nervous system (rest, digest, relax, repair, recycle, rejuvenate). π€π€·ββοΈ As little as 6 deep, diaphragmatic breaths can initiate this process and a minimum of just 7 minutes a day caused long term adaptations in the physiology and biochemistry of the body / brain. π°π§ββοΈ Increases in telomere length and reduction in biological age (signs of longer life span), increases in the production of neurotransmitters and growth factors that stimulate neurogenesis (the production of new neurons in the brain). Decreases in inflammation markers, improved co2 buffering, decreased blood pressure, increases in stress resilience AND pain tolerance (some cool research there). π¨ββοΈπ©ββοΈ We have all experienced burnout or stressful situations. Think about how easy this deep belly breathing is to apply, and how immediate the benefits are. Do it right when you wake up, while you're driving to work, before a high pressure situation like a big meeting or a speech, on the drive home, before you eat dinner, as you fall asleep, you get the point. π€£π€£ How neat is that? You can literally change the physiological and chemical state of your brain and body to optimize your function / performance by just deep belly breathing, any time and anywhere. AND the more you do it, the more benefit it has! We have a built in rechargeable battery. Sounds like those yogis weren't so crazy after all. ππ³ββοΈ These two movements, the floor slides and the leg extensions, are both wonderful mobility exercises for people who spend more than a few hours a day in the seated position, on the phone a lot, or at a desk. π¬π₯ I start most of my yoga classes/ clients with some form of deep belly breathing for 5 to 7 minutes and then usually a couple movements like these to reset and readjust the brain body as part of their daily "movement hygiene" aka flossing. @mauiyogashala is my new home away from home where I am teaching yoga and training clients on da aina. I am currently teaching yoga flow Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 430-530pm and hot core yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 830-930am. ππ§ββοΈπ³ββοΈ We are also brainstorming different ideas for more fitness style formats and group training classes, so stay tuned by checking out the schedule at www.maui-yoga.com.
