The Central Railway (CR) initiated restoration work on Wednesday to repair height barriers next to the Rail Over Bridge (ROB) at King’s Circle station in Mumbai’s Matunga, which were damaged by heavy vehicles. The repair work is expected to be completed by late Wednesday night, according to an official. The incident occurred early in the morning, when two vehicles struck the height barriers on the southbound carriageway of the road beneath the ROB. At approximately 3 am, a truck collided with the sacrificial height barrier situated before the actual height gauge. A few hours later, another vehicle hit the actual height gauge, installed further away from the bridge for added protection. Swapnil Nila, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) for CR, explained that the railway typically installs two height barriers—one before the bridge and another a few meters away—to prevent oversized vehicles from damaging the structure. He added that railway employees have been stationed at the site to ensure that no vehicles exceeding the height limit pass through, safeguarding the bridge. “Considering the safety of the bridge, we have taken immediate action to restore the damaged barriers and prevent further incidents,” Nila said. Meanwhile, the police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the truck driver involved in the collision, booking him for negligent driving and endangering human life.
