LOCKDOWN DAYS
These are the lockdown day's going on, sitting home ideal, no work to do. It's my 47th day today where I am home, sitting on the balcony, just watching the deserted market road which used to be fully crowded once. Every shop is shut, few people can be scene, assuming they must be going for their groceries or for the duties of essential services. Something louder these days can be hear is azan from neighbouring masjid and then Maulana urging people to stay home and complete their namaz from the home itself. During these fearing days such namaz and bell sounds from mandir are the only hope which was giving spirit to everyone that sooner everything is going to be alright. However staying at home is also not that bad, our busy life has never allowed us to spend time with our loved ones. To speak about me, I got married to Krashmi and after 2 days I was on my site for the work. People would hardly believe I was on leave of 4 days for my marriage. On the 5th day of my marriage I was on site, I still remember her face that day morning she was okay with me for going to my work but somewhere inside she was hoping me to stay back home at least for a day. But I'm kind of workaholic, my site schedule was critical, we were at foundation level. Although I’m having only 2 hobbies which I had developed after my college days, first is work and second is hard work. After almost 2 year of my marriage I am getting time to be with Krashmi, seeing her face with my full satisfaction, seeing and laughing with her on her notorious things is the best. Even on Sundays, when we both used to be at our homes, our maximum time used to go with doing some household works or groceries shopping. Like every married couple, we never got time for each other to spend together except for going on holidays like Kerala, Goa and Udaipur. But still to think about holidays, our most of the time went in wandering on places rather than spending time with each other. Unlike those days now I am holding her hand, grabbing her from the waist, kissing her on cheeks, seeing her being smiling is priceless. I love when she makes the cutest face and she makes it when I don't listen to her. I don't know why, she every time wants me to keep my face clean, keep scrubbing it, keep doing massage? And every time I say her, “being a man I should not be doing it" and at that time she shows her cutest face, I am like going flat for her. She has something which is dragging me every time towards her.
Although not every time she makes the cute face. Sometimes she is also makes her face red, when she is angry, I never understood, why do she expects rice can be serve with only the serving spoon but not with the small eating spoon, what matters is she just to get the rice anyhow, how much we want. I think this problem is with every wife. Why is it necessary to tuck the bedsheet very tightly in the mattress, government should intervene here and address on public announcements that only sleeping is important, one who is faithful to his/her sleep can sleep at any conditions. As I am home these days, like a good husband I am helping her with most of the activities like using washing machine, drying clothes. Why is it necessary to hang clothes in the manner like thick clothes on the exterior part, thin on the inner. We are staying in Mumbai, here all the 12 months the only season is hot and humid. Even if we leave the clothes as it is on the window, it is going to be dry anyhow.
Hahaha.... Anyways she never stops poking me and I will never stops poking her and this is how the marriage goes if I am not wrong. Our mom and dad must be knowing the true mantra but what I learnt in these 2 years is, if you can't give your wife time, give her the moments, keep poking her, let her scold you for the wrong tucked bedsheet and for wearing unmatched clothes because after that when you hug your wife she smiles beautifully, well I don't know about other wives but my wife smiles beautiful. And this is how moments are created. We can talk in future with our kids we use to do alot of fun. Or we can also share what we used to do in our lockdown days. In the completely silent road when we can see an idiot roaming around without any reason, we used to shout from balcony to go home like crazy. And people used to look up and that used to be very weird.
Infact to mention one incident, we live on 6th floor and there is a building in front of our window of 3 storeys, once in a night there was an incident when on terrace someone's AC's compressor catches a minor fire and people around the building started shouting and raising alarms we can see the fire from our window and we were also shouting for using blanket to cool it down. But I don't know how a fire rumour got spread in our building, almost half of the building crowd were gathered on our building terrace and we were clueless what was happening. As we were busy watching that not so thrilling and not so adventurous but entertaining acts of people using fire extinguisher. After staying for so many days in lockdown we are finding so many humans together and fire must be common but watching crowd these days is not so common, that reminded me of my train and platform days. Suddenly our doorbell started ringing like hell we rushed towards the door for new entertainment. On opening the door, we saw our neighbour uncle red faced, we can sense he was angry.
We were innocently and with no clue listening him, "we can hear u were shouting for the blankets but can't see what is happening in our building first, people gathered on terrace against the fire scare and you guys are enjoying the scene for your window. Bhai, how irresponsible you can’t even sense what is happening in our neighbourhood. Atleast you could have come out and tell the fire is not in our building. Aaj kal k generation…." and the saga went on without hearing us…
but we were really sorry for that, it was foolish to enjoy that incident.
Another incident still gives me laughter-
Currently the situation everywhere is not hidden, people are rarely getting anything due to the lockdown, every family was scared to step out due to coronavirus, once after almost about 2 weeks of home stay we stepped out for our basic needs, like groceries, vegetables and all... My wife saw an ayurvedic medical shops.
She- bhaiya do u have saunth powder (ginger powder)
Shopkeeper- No bhabhi
She- then do u have dried sounth cubes (only she knows what was that but- ginger, may be)
Shopkeeper- No bhabhi
She reacted on the shopkeeper- No worries I had dried ginger and made the cubes at my home, I can make the sounth powder now. I don't need from you.
Shopkeeper was stunned. I am still confused why she went there, if she was having it.
Sometimes even she doesn’t know what she is uttering, but she just utters. That was peculiar and hilariously she has got lots of useless talent of talking unnecessary.
However, everyone is scared, everyone is hoping to be good soon and everyone wants to go and start working again even me wants my site back. But if I would flip to see the other side of the coin I would see from crazy incidents to Ludo games from public announcements to pillow fights unwanted Lockdown is creating moments, Today, it’s our 2nd anniversary and anniversary to anniversary years will be passing, we will be busy in our work, but still when we will be together after the hectic day I’m sure we will be keep making the moments.
I love you…
Happy Anniversary Honey!!!
Always be there for you…

Alleppey Coir
COMFORTABLY COIR
Coir mattresses are the best. They give you an extremely comfortable, relaxed and a good night’s sleep. We all must have heard these words at some point or the other in our lives while shopping for mattresses. But what exactly is coir?
Coir is a natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of a coconut. It is the fibrous material found between the internal hard shell and the external coating of coconut. The word ‘coir’ comes from a Malayalam word ‘kayar’. Some historians believe that coir was first used to make the rope of ships by the Indian navigators, travelling to South East Asia and Gulf countries in around 11th century. The first coir factory ‘Darragh Smail & Company’ was jointly set up by James Darragh and Henry Smail in Alleppey, Kerala in 1859 which majorly produced coir mats and other floor coverings. Impressed by the versatility and strength of coir, the Britishers during their rule in India further promoted and expanded the coir sector. Soon Alleppey became a hub of Kerala’s coir industry.
The coir fibre is extracted from the hard outer husks of coconut. These husks are then carefully bundled and dipped in water for almost a period of 8 to 10 months. This is known as the Retting process. After taking out from the water, these husks are thrashed with a wooden mallet to extract the fibre and separate it from the decomposed husk. The fibre extracted is then spun to make the yarn. The yarn is then woven to make ropes, baskets, mats, rugs and other coir products.
Owing to the availability of economical labour and abundance of coconut as the raw material, the Coir Industry is the largest Cottage Industry in Kerala. Giving direct employment to millions of people, both men and women are actively involved in the production of Coir handicrafts. The women are mainly involved in the yarn spinning sector while men are engaged in the product-weaving sector of the industry.
With the growing awareness of using the eco-friendly products made from natural fibres, beautiful and affordable handicrafts made from coir like ropes, baskets, mattresses, floor coverings, rugs, doormats, lamps, scrubbers, etc are gaining momentum among the youngsters of our country.
The Kerala State Coir Corporation Ltd. has been successfully exporting coir products to several countries like the U.S.A., U.K., France, Russia, Poland and Brazil. The major exported products include coir pith, tufted mats, coir Geo-textiles, rugs and carpets, ropes and power-loom mats along with hand-loom mats, coir yarn and rubberized coir.
According to a government survey, the export of coir and coir products from India worth Rs. 2757.90 crore for the year 2019-20 was registered making it one of the topmost export item in India.  It is estimated that 9, 88,996 MT of coir and coir products were exported during the year 2019-20 as against 9, 64,046 MT that was exported during the year 2018-19.
The Department of Coir Development, Government of Kerala has recently organized an international event on Kerala coir and natural fibre products, ‘Coir Kerala 2021’, in the month of February 2021 on Virtual platform. With an aim of exploring and expanding the international market for coir products from Kerala and with the vision to support women empowerment by making the coir products easily available to all, the eighth edition of the annual Coir Kerala fair encourages the use of the latest machinery and technology in the coir production sector.
Furthermore, to bring a new wave of development in the coir industry of the state by enabling the villagers, especially the rural women of Allepey, the geographical indication status was granted to Alleppey coir in 2007.

THINGS FOREIGNERS SHOULD BE AWARE ABOUT INDIAN  TOURISM 1. The Traffic is Insane Believe the hype and the movies that show cars not sticking in the same lanes. In Delhi there are a lot of stop signs and red and green lights, but regardless of the rules no one seems to give a damn and no one seems to be doing anything about it. You cannot pay me to drive in India. Driving in Kashmir and other cities like Lucknow, Aligarh, and Meerut is even worse. I haven’t seen that many traffic lights and people indicate their turns by honking. I’m sure it’s the near equivalent everywhere in India. I haven’t been to every town so I don’t want to say something that’s not true but 95% of the roads I’ve been on can be treacherous if you’re not a skilled driver. But people do get around. 2. Do not have the street food or water This is a given. Food is amazing but if you’re not used to the street food you’re probably going to get sick. Most of the diseases are also water-born so instead of tap water stick to bottled water or sodas, especially if you’re traveling to smaller villages and towns. 3. If you’re a woman, be very careful when traveling alone As a foreigner you’re probably already going to get strange looks. Cover up; it’ll help. In a conservative country, a lot of men aren’t used to tank tops and shorts. Sadly, India has been reporting a lot of rape cases, as well. Don’t let this stop you from wandering, though. In any country any thing is possible, just keep your guard up. Knowing the exact direction and location when taking a cab is helpful too. 4. Become an expert at bargaining Do not get intimidated by the fact that you’re a foreigner. When going to street markets or shops, bargaining is natural in India. In my experience, vendors will often give you a high price first thinking that you’re ‘foreign’ and that you’re not going to know it’s worth. Give bargaining a shot. Don’t be afraid to argue. 5. Be aware of the pollution It’s getting really bad but it’s tolerable. I’ve had asthma so at times a little more dust and car traffic here and there can spark it up again. Don’t feel silly wearing a mask and or covering up with a scarf. Also, it’ll help to carry make up remover with you. The pollution can really sneak into your skin and cause breakouts. If you need to, clean your face as much as possible. 6. Do not pet stray dogs I recently rescued a newborn puppy from a dog that had been living outside my house for months. I gave it shots immediately and had it cleaned. Dogs in India shouldn’t be messed with. Yes, I did something risky because of the risk of rabies strays carry but that doesn’t mean you should not try to help using safety precautions. I saw a European couple enamored by puppies on the street and they decided to feed and pet them. Next thing you know, a herd of dogs came to get their share of food and it became ugly. Luckily, they escaped. The woman lost her scarf though. There are stray dogs everywhere in India, it’s sad but you have move along for your safety.   7. There are a lot of poor people begging for money There’s a huge poverty rate in India — due to the overpopulation, there are a lot of people begging for money. It sucks. It sucks even more that most of them are children. I’m someone who gets the urge to help everyone, so it’s hard not to help when I can. I’ve learned, however, that you have to understand everyone has a different way of living. Begging has become second nature. It’s a job. I went to a shrine called a “dergah” in New Delhi one day, where you can buy food stamps for people, give the stamps out and they’ll be able to get a plate of food. I bought so many I couldn’t keep count. It was worse when people kept lining up and hoping you’d get a stamp for them too. You have to tolerate it and find easier ways to help so you know you’re money is going to necessities and not other things. 8. Dress to Respect In certain areas and places in India, you have to know when to cover up. It’s a different culture with different values. Even if you’re a foreigner, you have to respect the rules if you’re visiting a shrine or some other tourist spot. Research the dress code before going to places. 9. You’ll often hear the azan (call to prayer) played on the loudspeakers. In the north (and many middle eastern countries) there’s a huge Muslim population. Especially traveling to Kashmir and places like Lucknow and Aligarh, you’ll sometimes hear them played throughout the night. Respect the religion and culture. 10. There are different dialects and very distinct cultures throughout India. Many people I’ve encountered in the US and overseas think Urdu or Hindi is the only language spoken. That’s not true. There’s Kashmiri, Tamil, Punjabi—the list goes on. South Indians look and dress different from North Indians. It’s a diverse country. Every part of India is different, from the beautiful beaches in Goa and Kerala to the Architecture in Agra. People look different and are from different cultures. A common misconception and sadly, racially profiled remark, I’ve heard is “You don’t look Indian?” I always fire back and ask, “What does any Indian look like?”. This confuses them. People think Indians are always dark skinned. If you notice in many Bollywood movies, the actresses have lighter skin tones. My point being, all Indians look different. 11. The public transportation is like no other. If you thought the subway in New York is nuts, the buses and trains are in India are crowded like crazy. When buses or trains are moving, you’ll see a lot of people running along and hopping on. This is not uncommon and I think it’s sweet when people reach out a hand and help each other get on a bus or a moving train. You have to know how to do this. It’s a skill. 12. There are a lot of guesthouses Depending on what part of India you’re traveling in, sometimes families open their homes and welcome visitors for a stay. In my opinion, it is more of a “welcome home” feel when you stay at a guesthouse.  Compared to staying in hotels (which are actually super luxurious in New Delhi), guesthouses are much cheaper and you get home-cooked food. These are really popular in Kashmir. Be aware though, in a lot of guesthouses and households in India the mattresses are hard—but like comfortable hard. In the US, we’re used to bed from Sleepys and Mattress King but many orthopedic surgeons have suggested that sleeping on a harder surface is better for your back, and from my experience it’s has done wonders. 13. There’s a tremendous respect for elders You’ll hear kids call you didi, aunty, bhai, or uncle. Even younger siblings refer to the elders by bhai or didi.  These are just signs of respect.

Cycle Touring: A Beginners Guide
Have you ever been sitting at your terribly boring office job looking at a picture like the one below and wandered: “Hmmm, that looks nice, I wish I could do that.”
Well, guess what?  You can. In fact, it’s a hell of a lot easier than you think. I should know, because I do it, and I’m by no means a professional at anything. (I’m still proud of myself when I make a cup of tea successfully.) So, after a few requests (and since my bike is currently being repaired), I decided to use the time to write a blog about cycle touring for beginners.
Tumblr media
What are you afraid of?
Funnily enough, the thing that scares most people is the fitness, thinking they won’t be able to cycle the long distances every day. In reality, this is the LEAST of your worries. Cycle touring is not the Tour de France, it doesn’t require any level of fitness at all. Seriously, it’s about as tiring as watching a particularly tense episode of Peaky Blinders. I mean, think about – you’re sitting down and you can move at 10km/h if you want – it’s chilled, homie.
So what should I be afraid of?
For me, the hardest bits are finding somewhere decent to camp and fixing mechanical problems. Depending on the country you’re in, camping can be VERY HARD (India) or VERY EASY (Sweden). Depending on your mechanic skills, bike issues can be VERY HARD or NOT QUITE AS HARD. (My mechanic skills are non-existent, which is why my bike is currently in the shop). I cycled across Africa with hardly any real bike repair skills and I somehow survived, so don’t worry – help is usually not far away.

After injuring my knee, a Warmshower host accommodated me for two days (Sweden, May 2019)
So let’s get down to details
In this blog, I’ll go into detail about all aspects of bike touring for those of you that feel you need to get ALL the info about something before doing it. However, the honest truth is – there is only ONE thing you really need to start bike touring: a bike.
My first bicycle tour I did with a friend at 19 years old from Paris to Cannes on a second-hand $30 mountain bike. The first day we stopped to rest almost every kilometer and only made it 10 kilometers in total. By day six we were doing 50kms a day easily.
It took about a month and cost about €100 in total, most of which was on food. We camped for free almost every night and cooked most of our meals on a cheap gas stove. (Nowadays, free camping in most of Western Europe is illegal and not as easily done, but in the countryside, many farmers will happily let you camp in their field if you ask nicely.)

If you’re lucky you’ll be offered a bed in a spare room (Zambia – Feb 2019)
The Bike
Okay, so the main thing you want with a touring bike is something strong. I travel very light but still carry about 10kg, which means I need more than just the standard cheap alloy frame and wheels that come with a basic road bike. A good starter touring bike is either a cheap touring bike, a basic mountain bike (no rear suspension) or a commuter/hybrid bicycle with gears. Fixie or single-speed bikes are generally not good for touring as you’ll struggle to go uphill with weight. Similarly, carbon bicycles usually aren’t designed to carry weight and anyway, are too expensive.
You DO NOT need a professional touring bike, especially not if you’re just starting out. If you decide after one week that it’s not for you then you’re just stuck with a €2000 bicycle that is now worth half that on resale value (if you do do this, however, I’ll buy that half-price bike off you!) Of course, if you’ve got the disposable cash then, by all means, buy a touring bike – even if you don’t end up touring a lot, it’s still a good bike for going around town.
The bicycle I’ve been touring on for the past two years cost only €350 from Decathlon (a simple BTwin Triban 100). It’s a basic road bike but with a stronger frame for carrying luggage. I had to upgrade a few bits and pieces but after 2 years, 10 thousand kilometers and 15 countries it’s still essentially the original bicycle. Now that I know I love cycle touring and want to keep doing it, I’m at the stage where I can start looking into buying a real touring bike.
Kerala, India (February 2018)
To begin with, it’s best to use whatever bicycle you currently own and just add racks or figure out a way to attach luggage to it. If you do decide to buy a new bike I wouldn’t go lower than €300 or you risk getting something that will just break soon with a lot of weight on it. (Second-hand mountain bike, on the other hand, make great cheap touring bikes but are usually a bit heavy and not as easy to cycle on-road)
Some examples of good beginner touring bikes:
Dawes Galaxy (or Ridgeback World Tour)
Dawes has been making bicycles since before the war and is still making some of the best and most affordable touring bikes. The Dawes Galaxy is a classic and is fairly cheap for touring standards, at only about €600. The Ridgeback World Tour is a similar price.
Jamis Aurora (or Allegro Sport)
Jamis does a cheap touring bike, the Aurora, at only about €600. Something similar to this is the Allegro Sport which is a good lightweight entry-level road bike that has rear eyelets for attaching a rack. With bikes like these, they don’t come built for touring so you need to add things like a rack. However, they are usually cheaper at about €400.
Trek Dual Sport (or Marlin 5) These are good crossover bikes that aren’t mountain bikes but have thicker tires that work well on-road or offroad and can carry heavier weight. They are also easy to convert into touring bikes by adding a rear luggage rack.
Bike ADD-ONS:
With whatever bike you buy, you’ll need these additions at the very minimum:
Schwalbe Marathon tires (trust me)
Extra water bottle holder
A small pump, puncture repair kit, and spare tubes
Lights (even if you don’t plan on cycling at night, get some lights!)
Tumblr media
Camping
Camping is often the most enjoyable and most annoying part of bike touring. Naturally, you need to be the kind of outdoors-person who enjoys camping to start with (but presumably you wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t). From finding a campsite, dealing with the weather, and cooking successfully – it all depends on how prepared you are.
The tent
Again, as with the bike, you don’t need any special over-priced equipment. Tents range from €20 to €2000, usually depending on how light and how weather-resistant they are. The only tent I’ve ever used cost €30 from Decathlon.  It’s basically an entry-level tent and at 1.5kgs it’s not the lightest but it’s not exactly heavy either and it’s never once leaked or blown away in the wind. I can’t imagine why I’d ever need anything else BUT I’m yet to camp on Mount Everest – or in any extreme conditions – so I don’t know.
Tumblr media
Naturally, you’ll also need some kind of roll map or inflatable mattress and a sleeping bag. These are also things you can get for cheap at any camping or outdoors store. Always try to get the smallest/lightest you can afford. If you’re going somewhere that is below 10 degrees at night make sure to get a winter sleeping bag – trust me! The summer ones are NOT warm enough.
Cooking equipment
You don’t necessarily need cooking equipment and if it’s your first trip you might choose to skip this and just make sandwiches or similar. On my first trip to India, I didn’t ever cook because the street food is so cheap and also camping is basically illegal where I was in the south. (Luckily, hotels are $5 a night so I didn’t need to.)
If you do want to cook, the basics you need are a small gas stove attachment, gas canisters that fit it, a pot, a knife, and a spoon or fork. Additionally, you can take a frying pan but I never have. Mostly, I just eat pasta which can all be made in one pot together. (A pot can also be used to make oats in the morning if you wanna eat cheap). The simpler, the better. (However, I have seen pro cycle-tourists who carry entire kitchens with them and cook 5-star meals!)
Tumblr media
Bike Tools
You’ll need to learn how to fix a puncture or change a tube at the VERY least. The rest you can learn as you go. The minimum tools you should carry (usually in a seat bag) are tire levers, puncture kit, and spare tubes. You should also have a small bike tool that has a set of Allen keys and screwdrivers (for tightening bolts, changing seat height, etc). These cost about €5 at any bike shop.
There are a bunch of other tools that are useful but you don’t need to worry about these at the start.
So, how do I start?
Okay, so you’ve got your bicycle, a tent, sleeping gear, tools and maybe a little stove and pot. You can stuff everything in a bag and strap it on the back with bungee cords or buy additional pannier bags that clip on your rack. Either way works fine and depends on your budget. Pannier bags do have advantages like being water-proof and distributing weight well, but I didn’t use any for my first five or six trips. As long as all your stuff stays on the bike, you’re good to go! (Wrap it in plastic if you expect rain.)
You might also want to buy a handlebar bag or frame bag where you can keep snacks, a phone charger, map, etc. (But that’s all stuff you’ll get more involved with once you start touring, I didn’t have one on my first trip)
Tumblr media
Then, plan your trip.
For the first one, I’d suggest going for a short weekend roll about in whatever nature surrounds your hometown. This way you get to test the bicycle and camping gear without going too far from home. Wherever you are in the world there should at least be a forest, beach or field to camp in or at the very least, a cheap local campsite. Campsites obviously have the advantage or electricity, running water and toilets and might be a good starter option if you are new to camping.
If you choose to wild camp, make sure you don’t camp on someone’s property or at least ask permission first if you do. Also, obviously don’t leave a mess whether its someone’s property or not!
Tumblr media
A public shelter (Sweden, May 2019)
Countries Countrywise, I found Sweden to be a great place to start bicycle touring because it has excellent roads, good cycle lanes in many places, and you camp wherever you want legally and for free! (not on private property obviously).
In most of Eastern Europe, you can also pretty much camp wherever without trouble but Sweden is super-safe and you are guaranteed to get no hassles. In Germany and much of Western Europe, so-called “wild” camping is illegal and if you don’t hide very well, you will get told to move or possible even fined. Germany is the most strict about this.
Tumblr media
Sweden
I haven’t cycle-toured the U.S. or South America but I’ve heard it’s quite good for wild camping as it has an abundance of nature. Most of Southeast Asia is good for wild camping and also has very cheap accommodation everywhere. (Places like central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are best reserved for those who are experienced cycle tourists.)
Budget
Your daily budget will vary somewhat depending on where you are and how ‘wild’ you are prepared to be. If you wild camp every night and only cook cheap supermarket food you can get by on a few euro a day. Using a shared accommodation app like Warmshowers can also keep down costs and is a great way to meet other cycle tourists!
If you need to pay for accommodation for whatever reason, it’s going to be around €5 – €15 per day in cheap countries and €30-€40 in more expensive ones (like the US and Western Europe). It’s easy to check what accommodation is available and costs beforehand on apps like Agoda or Booking(.)com. As a beginner, it’s nice to know what’s around in case of rain – or if you just need a shower!
Conclusion The main thing is – KEEP IT SIMPLE. Cycle touring is not difficult – honestly. Just pack some stuff, get on your bike, and go. Your first puncture, your first rainstorm, your first busy road will all be tough, but it only gets easier. The longer you do it, the less the problems become a struggle and the more enjoyable everything is. Soon you’ll be a star mechanic, a fit cyclist, and an excellent stealth-camper… and then you’ll quit your lame desk job and wonder why you didn’t choose this lifestyle long ago!
