Allison is a magician's daughter, longing to break out of his controlling grip. Samir is a sympathetic kid who wants to run away with her. Richard is alone in a new place, abandoned by his peers. Tina is a young punk who decides to protect him, and shake up his understanding of the world around him. My rating: 4/5 My commentary:

This was another random pull from work - in this case, I was covering in another library and wanted to see what their graphic novel selection was like. Pretty poor, as it happened, but this little volume intrigued me. Set in the very early days of personal computers, it follows some teenagers who find each other and help each other out of their horrible home life situations, forming a chosen family as they do. This is an era before my time (I first started being Chronically Online in the early YouTube days) and yet something about it felt so, so familiar. I don't know, I remember being a chronically lonely kid who nevertheless found people online who shared my interests and were people that I could talk to, even if people in real life were strange to me. I've never been through the kind of things that these kids have been through, but these stories struck at something real, something knowable. And I think that's why I liked them so much.

Our story follows two pairs of teenagers - Allison, under the thumb of her stern and abusive magician father, who finds friendship with Samir, a kid who wants to help her, and Richard, a boy who is shunned by his peers for being different, and Tina, a young punk who ends up as his self-appointed protector. All of these kids are very plausible, and you can't help but feel for them; lonely teenagers out of place with the rest of the world, out of step, who find each other and gain the solace and companionship that they've been looking for. All of them have their flaws, abrasiveness or shyness or just being a little too strange for the world they find themselves in. I was almost bracing myself for a stranger-danger moral so common to stories of the internet, but no. Everybody the kids meet online are exactly who they claim to be. Which was nice - granted, this is a very old version of the internet, barely recognisable to me. But still. It's a very satisfying, very sweet set of stories, with messed-up kids just looking to find themselves and find their way in the world, and I very much appreciated it for that.

Next up, something doubleplusungood - an adaption of 1984.

Celebrity Age-Gap Relationships Astrology Observation 💞A common thing I’ve noticed in a lot of age gap relationships between people in my personal life is the male partner nearly always has Virgo/Scorpio/Libra in his inner planets. Sometimes a combo of two or even all three are present.

My theory as to why this happens goes pretty deep and likely deserves its own post so I’ll just try to summarise: I’ve always had a theory that men with these placements are subconsciously drawn to younger partners. However, most of the time, it is genuinely not in a predatory or nefarious type of way. My theory is that it has to do with a deeply subconscious need to nurture, provide, look out for, and protect their partners. So they may be drawn to younger women because they want to protect them in a “fatherly” type of way. Again: I believe that this is subconscious and many of them may not even realise that they are doing it. I don’t believe that a majority of them are doing it out of malice, I think it’s just part of who they are.

The number is how many years older they are than their girlfriend/fiancée/wife.

Hello Anon!! Wow that was so long and I just woke up but I love seeing people that passionate, I’m the same about what I love (Gemini moon 8H you know 😂)… so!! I 100% agree with you. To be honest this is what I thought:

His spouse IS def younger than him. I don’t wanna make assumptions about the age gap because we can’t really be that precise until it really happens. But already seeing so many signs she will be younger is already a good sign. So I wanted to say she is younger than him but the theory could go two ways: 1. she could appear extremely young compared to her age because it happened to some people already! For ex, I noticed people with cancer placement have these kind of experiences in their life, and his Personal DC is in Cancer so it wouldn’t shock if she had this.

2. OR she could def be younger than him, like wow damn. Haha (I hope not the same as the people there because 39 yrs? JK?!)

To be honest I mostly focused on the BPC last time and I didn’t wanna put things around his Natal Chart or other persona chart because I’m currently preparing a whole analysis about his Future Spouse in his natal chart! I’m studying hard these days haha, but I’ll keep your theory in my notes too!

Revisiting my favourite film of 1991

If you were roughly my age and aesthetic ideology in the 1980s, one of the most notorious scenes in the movies was Ally Sheedy getting a makeover from Molly Ringwald in The Breakfast Club. The general view was  (and the internet suggests still is) that not only was it no business of Ringwald’s character to de-gothify Sheedy, but also that Sheedy more conventional = less attractive. 

More fondly remembered is the scene in The Big Sleep where Marlowe (Bogart) has an hour or so to kill during a stakeout and the manager of the bookshop he’s in (Dorothy Malone) indicates she’s more than willing to help him pass the time. He agrees, but then asks her if she’s OK taking off her glasses: ‘Little things like that make…’ She does, and loosens her hair, and he responds with a gratified, ‘Hello!’ (It’s far from the only movie in which a woman is perceived as becoming more tempting minus the specs, but it’s at least one of the best).

Trust could be seen as containing something of a riposte to both of these scenarios. Maria  (Adrienne Shelly) starts the film with a perm, mall-girl make-up and bright clothes. It’s her choice to let her hair go straight and wear in a messy ponytail, ditch the make-up and stick with the plain shirt-dress she’s nicked out of a closet. It is, admittedly, Matthew (Martin Donovan) who asks why she doesn’t use the glasses she obviously needs. Because they make her look like a librarian. ‘I like librarians,’ he says, and she wears the glasses through most of the rest of the film.

In the prevailing progressive ideology of the 2020s, devaluing the aesthetics of mall girls is just as bad as oppressing goths. But as the 1980s slowly gave way to the 1990s, the mostly self-driven makeunder Maria does in Trust seemed like a good thing. And, yes, within the vibe of the film and that of the people likely to be watching it, it was understood that Maria/Shelly looked better de-permed. And the aesthetics of Hal Hartley movies meant a lot to me in the early 1990s.

(Side note: I saw this film while I was at university, and knew a lot of women who had turned up in their first year with big curls – which had long been banished by their third years but embarrassingly lingered on the photoboards in the departments where they were studying.)

Trust is the second feature film Hartley made, and the first one I saw, having read about it in The Face magazine. My expectations were very high and fully fulfilled – I became a bit obsessed by it, or at least as far as I ever became obsessed by anything (I’m not an obsessive person). 

I’ve written about Hartley’s debut The Unbelievable Truth here. Trust is in some ways very similar. Both are filmed on Hartley’s home patch of Lindenhurst, Long Island (if you’re tracking these things, it’s about 18 miles further out from Brooklyn than Valley Stream, where Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge takes place.) Both star Adrienne Shelly paired with a guy who is a bit older* and is somewhat notorious locally. In both films, Gary Sauer plays the doofus Shelly’s character was going out with before she wised up, and much of the rest of the supporting cast is the same.

And yet, rewatching them after all this time, these films felt more different than I had remembered. Trust is (purposefully) less of a comedy, to some extent less stylised (although still very stylised) and maybe more… I both want to say and am reluctant to say: sincere? Heartfelt? 

Maria and Matthew are both floundering when they meet: she’s being kicked out of school, she’s pregnant, she’s having trouble with her parents. Matthew keeps losing jobs because he’s got too many principles/hang-ups but also is violent, and he’s still living with his father (John McKay), who bullies him (which he then takes out on the random people he punches.) It’s not quite an instant connection, but a fairly quick one. Matthew’s room is littered with piles of hardback books, and Maria dives deep into a self-improvement-through-learning kick.

Martin Donovan became a fixture of Hartley’s films – he’s imposing, he’s got good hair, a good voice, looks right stomping around in an overcoat, but there’s enough vulnerability there. But it’s Shelly as Maria who is the heart of this film – it’s her determination, ultimate fearlessness in difficult circumstances that makes this odd melodramatic story hold together. She’s so good in this movie. 

McKay as Matthew’s dad and Merritt Nelson as Maria’s mom are well cast, and Edie Falco is a real treat as Maria’s recently divorced sister.

If you like films with an austere, blue/grey look – and I very much do – this a kind of beautiful, perfectly composed picture. It’s easy to think of low budget films being inherently rough-and-ready, but Hartley’s films are – in look, in movement, in words – always precise. 

Trust, the consensus seems to be, is Hartley’s best film. Have now revisited this, The Unbelievable Truth, Simple Men and Amateur, I’ll go along with that – I like them all a lot, but this one is everything clicks the most.

*Robert John Burke in The Unbelievable Truth was about six years older than Shelly, Donovan nine, although I think Mathew in Trust is meant to read as younger than Josh in TUT. Shelly plays a high schooler in both movies but was in her early/mid twenties at the time.

The second volume of this graphic novel series takes place in the 80s, in Evol House, a venue for punk shows and the home of a local BBS where runaway teens and others take refuge. It's pitch perfect, and full of awkward moments, others that are wonderful, self doubt, and chapters that bring the characters from the first volume more into focus. And it has a perfect ending. I cannot recommend this series highly enough.

This is both a sequel and prequel to Michael Mann's 1995 film. Because the early pages are so reflective of the movie, I almost threw it across the room, but I'm so glad I hung in there until it got going. It tells the story of an earlier heist, back when the whole crew was alive, and follows the movie's survivor as he tries to recover and restart his life while on the run, far from home and his family. It's very entertaining. If you know someone like me who has to watch Heat in its entirety every time they stumble across it on TV, get them this book.

If you like fantasy and science fiction and you're looking for an absolutely superb read with an entertainingly smartass protagonist, go read the first book in the series, Gideon The Ninth. That will almost inevitably lead you to this book, because you'll love it so much you want to find out what the hell happens next. But when you read that book take notes. Muir does not slow down and does not explain much -- you're either entirely with her and the story she's or you're going to hate it. And this book (unlike the others) has some parts that make the backstory clearer, but only if you're already in the know. As soon as I finished it I called my friend Beck, "WTF just happened?" And she tried to fill me in and answer my questions, but she doubted her answers a bit too, I think. We've been reading articles on the series. So it's time for me to reread Gideon the Ninth (and then, inevitably, the others again) with a notepad in hand, and I'm going to have to before the fourth book comes out next year. I feel like I've joined a cult. (In writing those words I'm not sure that's a joke.) A great read despite my personal confusion.

I could never countenance plagiarism, but as they say, if you're going to steal, steal from the best. Even if you're Howard Hawks stealing from Howard Hawks, which happens almost shamelessly in Rio Bravo. No one who loves Hawks's Red River (1948) as much as I do could fail to miss how much of Rio Bravo is, let us say, borrowed from that film. There's the byplay between Sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) and Stumpy (Walter Brennan), which echoes that of Dunson (Wayne) and Groot (Brennan) in Red River. Ricky Nelson's young gun Colorado Ryan is a reworking of Montgomery Clift's Matthew Garth. And Angie Dickinson's Feathers could almost be a parody of Joanne Dru's motormouth Tess Millay. But the Hawksian borrowings don't stop with Red River. When Feathers kisses Chance for the first time and then goes in for a second kiss in which he participates more enthusiastically, she comments, "It's better when two people do it," which is a direct steal from a similar scene in To Have and Have Not (Hawks, 1944) when "Slim" (Lauren Bacall) tells "Steve" (Humphrey Bogart), "It's even better when you help." The two movies share not only a director but also a screenwriter, Jules Furthman, who is joined in Rio Bravo by Leigh Brackett, who earlier worked together on another Bogart-Bacall-Hawks movie, The Big Sleep (1946). Even the composer of the score for Rio Bravo, Dimitri Tiomkin, gets into the borrowing game, taking a theme from his score for Red River and handing it over to lyricist Paul Francis Webster for the song, "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me," sung by Dean Martin's Dude and Nelson's Colorado. Rio Bravo maybe isn't as great a movie as Red River, and it probably signals some creative exhaustion on Hawks's part that he not only borrowed so heavily from his earlier work but also felt it necessary to remake Rio Bravo in two thinly disguised versions, also starring Wayne, as El Dorado (1966) and Rio Lobo (1970). But is there a more entertaining self-plagiarism, and a surer demonstration of what made Hawks one of the great filmmakers?

A BRIDGE TOO NOIR

This past weekend Your Humble Narrator made his way west to attend the 25th annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival at the Camelot Theatre in Palm Springs, California.

As in past years, the fest offered a slate of black-and-white crime films from the '40s and '50s. Also as in past years, some of them inevitably strained the definition of noir; this year's schedule included a Sherlock Holmes movie, 1944's The Scarlet Claw, and a Western, Day of the Outlaw (1959). But so what? The definition of noir as a genre is nebulous anyway. The point is that the chance to see cool old flicks like these on a movie screen doesn't come along every day. For sheer entertainment, this may be the most reliably enjoyable film festival in the country.

Also on the schedule were such familiar entries as the John Garfield boxing drama Body and Soul (1947), Anthony Mann's outstanding and still relevant 1949 immigration thriller Border Incident, with George Murphy and Ricardo Montalban, and the hard-boiled thrillers Dead Reckoning (1947) and The Enforcer (1951), both starring noir king Humphrey Bogart. But some of us are most likely to be drawn to the relative obscurities.

This year, for instance, brought the opportunity to see No Man of Her Own (1950). In his onstage introduction to the film at the Camelot, TCM Noir Alley host Eddie Muller repeatedly referred to star Barbara Stanwyck as "the greatest actress in movie history." I'd certainly put her in the top five, anyway, and she's in fine, intense form in this adaptation of the classic Cornell Woolrich novel I Married a Dead Man (originally published under his pseudonym, William Irish).

She plays the heck out of a down-on-her-luck pregnant woman who, through circumstances generously described as coincidental, is able to pass herself off as the new daughter-in-law of a wealthy couple whose son has just died. Despite the obvious absurdities of the plot, the film is engrossing and even moving because of Stanwyck's impassioned star performance, and a fine supporting cast including John Lund, Jane Cowl, Phyllis Thaxter, Richard Denning, Milburn Stone, Carole Matthews as no-nonsense femme fatale and Lyle Bettger in a despicable turn as Stanwyck's sneering blackmailer.

The movie also had, for me, a madeleine of Proustian remembrance: Though I hadn't thought about it in years, the scene in which Stanwyck and Thaxter are upended in a train crash came back to me from childhood with the vividness of an acid flashback. I don't think I saw any of the rest of it back then, but that tidbit had been waiting in the memory banks to be revived for at least half a century.

Other gems this year included Escape in the Fog (1945), with the adorable young Nina Foch dodging Axis spies in San Francisco, and the compelling Southern thriller Woman in Hiding, from 1950.

The woman in question is Ida Lupino, who realizes she's made a major mistake marrying creepy Stephen McNally before the honeymoon even starts. Lupino's delicate beauty contrasts with her gutsy, heartfelt spirit, and director Michael Gordon manages a Hitchcock-worthy sequence set in the stairwell of a hotel. The cast includes, along with Lupino's real-life husband Howard Duff, a bit role by Joe Besser, a later-vintage replacement member of the Three Stooges.

But maybe the real oddity of the schedule was Across the Bridge (1957), a British feature based on a Graham Greene short story and starring a mannered and sweaty Rod Steiger--with a German accent, no less!--as a short-fused white-collar criminal dodging extradition in a Mexican border town. On his way south he's thrown another man, who he resembles, off the train and stolen his passport, but he ends up with this guy's soulful-faced spaniel, Delores, dogging his footsteps (sorry) and gazing reproachfully up at him.

Directed by Ken Annakin, Across the Bridge was shown in Palm Springs in a fairly crappy digital copy, but the presenter assured us that they're working to get it properly restored. I hope they succeed. It's just about the most Graham Greene-ish thing ever, full of moral limbo south of the border and Mexican women wearing prominent crucifixes. And of course it's via "Delores" (suffering) that Steiger's rotten fugitive finds a fateful sort of redemption. In terms of performance, by the way, even full-tilt Stieger is no match for the beautiful Delores, who steals the movie like a dropped potato chip.
