do you ever have those moments with your mental health where you've been pretending to be fine so well for long enough that you managed to convince yourself it was fine, and then you just have one of those days and go, '...oh, i'm depressed as fuck and have been for months, that explains a lot'

like apparently i cannot get hit multiple times by Bad Events with no breathing room and still wind up fine

who knew. the irony of the fact that i write fic for what just might be the most depressed marvel character around and somehow i didn't see the warning signs in myself does not escape me.

(don't worry i have a doctor's appointment soon and will be discussing medications and therapy, the family is aware and supportive and keeping an eye on me, etc etc)

anyway, don't make the mistake of faking yourself out for as long as i did, this probably would have been easier to handle a year ago.

worst part of DD canon

Karen CONSTANTLY putting herself into situations she cannot defend against, forcing other characters (men) to rescue her or die protecting her. Cool, cool, cool. Reinvent the damsel in distress trope but call it feminism because she subverts expectations by proactively putting herself into these circumstances, instead of them just happening to her.

I wish they had better plans and follow-through for the Hand.

DD (especially the series) is so famously grounded in realistic, street-level violence. But since it still exists in the Marvel universe, yes, there IS going to be overlap with the extraordinary and supernatural. And the Hand IS a Daredevil creation, as well as being a constant antagonist for him in the comics. I think it's perfectly natural they would come up in the series, and I think (absurd as it might seem) they could have worked if done right.

But they teased too cryptically in S1 (when they could have been laying a little more groundwork maybe). Then S2 came along and they gave too much all at once, cramming in a lot to: share time with the Punisher storyline and try to set up The Defenders. It very suddenly became "both feet in." I think they should have planned the release a lot better. I also think they could have.

Sorry, I'm very post-S2 rewatch right now. I know I'm not saying anything new. Most people feel this way. But I see a lot of those people say they shouldn't have done the Hand at all. No, I think it's fine. Matt is not some Amish superhero who has no contact with the world around him. Even the series itself starts off post-alien invasion thwarted by a god and other enhanced individuals. Matt exists in a smaller scale of that, but he still exists in it. Having the Hand is fine. They just needed to do it right, with better/slower build-up. (They also never reeeeally explained the Black Sky or "Substance" that keeps them alive.)

ok gonna say something that probably sounds insane but just bear w me. i think i figured out what bugged me so much about matt miller. he feels like he was engineered to attract a certain audience in the 2010s and nothing else. like he doesn’t feel like a naturally occurring goth/emo character. and i think that honestly plays into my general dislike of the deckers as a whole. they feel so……..marketable. and this is definitely just a product of srtt as a whole bc that entire game is like. desperate to be as marketable and commercialized as possible. but i think that’s why the deckers/matt rubbed me the wrong way. as in there doesn’t feel like there’s any thought outside of just “he is gonna attract this specific audience,” whereas i feel like goth/emo/etc characters in other media from the same era at least had like. a reason for being that way. they had a purpose outside of looks. he’s nothing outside of appearances.

and yes, you can absolutely make the argument that isn’t every character in some way meant to be marketable?? and like. yeah. but matt just checks off so many specific boxes that it feels so…..planned. nothing about him really feels like a natural character. british emo teen boy who has social anxiety? black hair that covers his face and he paints his nails? “here…..i am god.” like holy shit. just no substance outside of appearances. and it really doesn’t help that he and others really don’t get much development. it just feels very superficial. not to say the other srtt antagonists are like. masterpieces. cuz they’re not. but matt and the deckers in particular just felt so…….contrived. this guy was made specifically to be the fan favorite instead of making an interesting character first. like why should i care about him.

but perhaps that’s just the ethos of srtt. looks above all else.

thinking about the time i watched the departed and was completely unable to follow the plot because i spent the first 60% of the movie thinking that matt damon and leinardo dicaprio were the same person and there was some elaborate double- or triple-crossing going on. for the life of me i cannot tell those two apart

dude the legend of the mighty nein is gonna tank my mental health sooo bad lol. they released one (1) clip and it reignited all the frustration and bitchiness from that time pretty much instantly. i spent like an hour at work today getting annoyed over years-old bullshit and then going "okay i'm going to think about something else now" and then inevitably drifting back to it and getting angry again

cr2 is just inextricably linked to the vindictive cruelty of people who did everything in their power to 1) ignore canon and 2) look down on a group of people who had every right to get invested in a years-long relationship and then vocally feel frustration when that relationship came to a fast, blunt, unsatisfying conclusion. god it's not even the disappointment that's lingered as much as it's the ice cold rage over being condescended to and talked about by the "dont forget to love each other uwu" crowd like i'm some asshole idiot child for having any critiques or negative feelings towards something that was incredibly ridiculously stupidly precious to me.

and now the show's gonna come out, and it's going to be unavoidable, and it's gonna happen all over again ^__^

The way that, despite being all the same character, every doctor is the opposite of the one that came before but perfect for their role in the Doctor's development.

Nine was fresh out of the war, avidly protesting violence and learning to let people in. Learning who they are and how to love themself and the people around them. Their time was cut short but they had a good run, figuring out who they were amidst all their trauma and regrets.

Ten was created for Rose Tyler, created to love, yet never able to say it. While Nine learned to love Ten lost everything and almost lost themselves too. They almost took a step back in the sense that they gave into their grief and regret, aiming to hurt those in the way they were hurt instead of helping everyone they could.

Eleven is the utmost contrast to Ten's "timelord victorious" arc, being goofy and childish and finding their family with the Pond's. Being able to find their wife and do everything they could to protect the people they love. However, they couldn't keep the act up forever, as once they lost the Ponds, they just shut down and kept to themself, ready to die and thinking that they would. They were, as the war doctor put it in the 50th anniversary special, the doctor who forgets, or tries to, rather than deal with it.

Twelve. Oh god I could talk for hours about them as much as I love Tennant there's just something about Twelve that has my heart. They're more closed off, living up to the 'grumpy professor' stereotype, but by god did they love their friends. That's a whole other essay, but in contrast to 11 running from their problems, 12 faced them, and while they ultimately paid the price for it, they were able to move on in a way none of their predecessors could.

Thirteen, my favorite girl. While I do think that the series should have ended with 12, never doubt that I love 13. They had so much thrown at them but never dealt with any of it, shoving it down instead of facing it head on like 12. Still, they never gave up, and while they didn't let people in as much as well, any other doctor, they always did their best to protect their fam. Always smiling, even if it wasn't always true, and they never hid their love for their friends and life in general.

And now Fourteen!!! The blorbo is back and they are blorboing so hard. 14 really is 10 but with all of the best parts of the others. Freely talking about how they love their friends, nearly breaking down when they though Wilf had down and getting very close when Donna not-died in their arms. I'm so excited to see how their character is developed over the next specials even though it's going to hurt by the end.
