Head Canon: The Next Generation

Since the Downton movie is undoubtedly going to shoot my entire mental construct for the next gen, but I’m still going to write my AU kidlets because I have stories for them (not that any of them want to talk to me about said stories, really) I figured I might as well get something on them down for posterity. I will probably just do the Crawley/Talbots, since they’re the most developed in my brain, but since I’m trying to limber up for a day of writing, we’ll see what comes out.

Here we go.

George Crawley (b. 1921): Son of Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley. Heir to the estate.  Head canon - likes cricket and shortbread. Is a fighter pilot in WWII, much to his mother’s dismay, but manages to come out in one piece. His hair darkens as he ages, so by the time he’s grown, rather than looking like Dan-Stevens-As-Matthew-Crawley he looks like Dan-Stevens-As-Edward-Farris-With-A-Modern-Hair-Cut. Aside from the hair he still looks like his father, strongly. His personality is fairly easy and laid back, although he picked up some of his mother’s pragmatism. While he’s fine with tackling theoretical problems or social-economic threats, he tends to shy away from interpersonal issues.

Edward Talbot (b. 1926): Son of Lady Mary and Henry Talbot. Looks exactly like his mother, only male. Acts a lot like her too, although quieter. Unless specific story canon dictates otherwise, he was born in a broken down car on the side of the road between Downton and Ripon. Thomas Barrow was driving, for reason, thus leading to his middle name being ‘Thomas’ and a million jokes about Thomas being his third parent. The two of them are legitimately quite close. Fought in the cavalry at the end of WWII. Lost his hearing due to a war injury. Fond of horses and ginger biscuits.

Elizabeth Talbot (b. 1927): Daughter of Lady Mary and Henry Talbot. Inherited all of the red-hair genes in the family, although her eyes are hazel rather than the more traditional blue or green. Militantly feminine, she looks down her nose at the notion of wearing trousers or cutting her hair short, insists that every room in the house have flowers in it somewhere, and generally acts as if she’s a princess rather than an Earl’s granddaughter. The family has learned to deal with her by putting her in charge of all tea parties of any size. Fortunately the staff all handle her bossing them around well. She’s not mean-spirited at all, just very opinionated, and has been compared to her maternal great-grandmother.

Hugh Talbot (b. 1930): Son of Lady Mary and Henry Talbot. Hugh was a bit of a surprise as his parents had stopped trying for children. He may be a bit spoiled, particularly by his sister who tended to view him as her personal dress-up-doll when they were growing up. He looks mostly like his father, although his eyes are dark and his hair is a bit lighter.  His face shape is also a bit different. He’s generally sweet tempered and energetic, if a bit scattered. Cricket is one of the few things that has managed to keep his attention for more than a year at a time and what he wants to do when he grows up changes on a regular basis. Around sixteen people started to figure out he’s gay, which makes his mother extra protective. Thomas was his first crush, but he was young enough at the time that no one realized it.
