Patterns of Life
Pretty patterns bring beauty to life. And one day, the perfect pattern might just save your life too. Tissue engineering is the process of growing new material to replace the damaged or diseased original in the body. The first step is to lay out a foundation of cells in just the right pattern to steer the growth. A new tool has been developed to give precision control over both this layout and the cell-gathering process that must come first. It can selectively pluck particular tiny cell types from a stream of material, and layer them onto any flat surface, in any design, such as the red and green stained cells in the example pictured. This process could potentially grab cancer cells circulating in a patient’s blood to test them on platforms with a variety of treatment drugs, or help lay the foundations for new tissue growth in the lab.

Las Vegas Coronavirus Relief Task Force Partnered With Company Tied To UAE Intelligence
A company that owns an app secretly used by the autocratic regime of the United Arab Emirates to spy on people may have gained an entry point into Southern Nevada, after a COVID-19 relief task force in Nevada struck a deal in May with the company — despite the company’s ties to the UAE’s intelligence services.
Both the firm, Abu Dhabi–based Group 42, and the private-sector Nevada COVID-19 Response, Relief, and Recovery Task Force said in a press release that Nevada had obtained “vital testing materials thanks to a long-term partnership with the UAE and G42.”
According to the press release, the government of the UAE donated coronavirus test kits, and G42 offered its expertise and technical capabilities, as well as help with an “innovative genomic study” at the University Medical Center in Las Vegas, the press release said.
Former CEO of MGM Resorts Jim Murren, the head of the task force, said in the release that “resources from G42 will substantially increase our ability to conduct COVID-19 testing and research to help us mitigate the effects of this virus.”
But what Murren appears not to have known is that G42 was involved in building a secret digital tool for the intelligence services of the United Arab Emirates.
G42, an artificial intelligence company, is the only registered shareholder of ToTok, a chat app that was the subject of an exposé in the New York Times in December. Downloaded millions of times around the world, ToTok may have been used by the UAE’s intelligence services to collect data on people who use it, their conversations, and their images, according to the Times’ analysis of the app.
The app’s creator was listed as a company called Breej Holding, but according to the Times, it was “most likely a front company affiliated with DarkMatter, an Abu Dhabi-based cyberintelligence and hacking firm where Emirati intelligence officials, former National Security Agency employees and former Israeli military intelligence operatives work. DarkMatter is under F.B.I. investigation, according to former employees and law enforcement officials, for possible cybercrimes.”
After the New York Times investigation, both Google and Apple removed ToTok from their app stores.
Bill Marczak, a researcher at Toronto-based digital research group Citizen Lab who has written extensively about G42, said he was surprised when he first saw the news of the Las Vegas deal. “It raises a question about what data this company is getting access to,” he said.
Along with Breej Holdings and DarkMatter, G42 is part of an opaque web of companies linked to the powerful Abu Dhabi royal Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who oversees much of the country’s national security apparatus. A Reuters investigation in January 2019 found that DarkMatter recruited former NSA operatives to spy on suspected militants, other governments, and human rights activists.
G42 shares a number of staff with DarkMatter, including its CEO, Peng Xiao. G42 declined to comment, but the company has said previously it has no connection to DarkMatter.
In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Murren downplayed the relationship. Asked if he had heard of ToTok, Murren said, “No, I haven’t.”
He added that “G42 had no involvement on the [lab] project.”
He said G42 had only brokered an introduction to the government of the United Arab Emirates, which sent supplies, including coronavirus test kits. He said the company did not provide resources, technology, or expertise to the lab at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is run by the University Medical Center.
Murren said staff at Nevada’s University Medical Center held a call with G42 to discuss using artificial intelligence in population health and genomic studies, as well as coronavirus testing.
The lab started doing tests last Thursday, Murren added.
“The genomic study was the original intent of the conversation we had with G42,” Murren said. Because G42 is an AI company, he said he hoped to discuss “health security” measures that could be taken in casinos, like thermal cameras to screen for fevers.
“I hope to have those discussions with G42 in the future, but there has been no follow-up on more sophisticated studies,” he said.

Coronavirus: New Abu Dhabi-developed test shows promising results
L to R: Mission group members Aryam Ahmed, Latifa Alseiari, Abdulla Rashidi, Nader Al Hamadi, Dr Pramod Kumar and Dr Mohammad Firoz Khan Picture Credit score:
Abu Dhabi: A brand new type of laser-enabled test to detect coronavirus in affected sufferers seems to be exhibiting promising results, with 85 to 90 per cent accuracy, its UAE-based developer stated at present.
The expertise, designed by QuantLase Imaging Lab, can present testing results in seconds, even because it maintains the identical stage of accuracy as different checks to detect COVID-19, lab executives claimed in a digital press convention.
“We’ve tested the equipment on 6,000 samples across 13 sites so far, and it is working. The equipment can be used to detect any virus that affects patients’ blood, but it can be [tailored] to detect COVID-19,” Peter Abraham, govt director at Worldwide Holding Group, an Abu Dhabi Inventory Alternate-listed funding agency that owns QuantLase.
Abraham informed DailyKhaleej that every test on the lab’s new expertise might value as much less as Dh100, and that prices could even be halved with mass manufacturing. If realised, this might make the test cheaper than the RT-PCR checks which can be the at the moment the worldwide gold normal for coronavirus testing, which are available at about Dh200 a package.
Because the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, researchers world wide have been working to develop correct expertise to permit for mass testing. The RT-PRC checks, which require a nasal swab to gather genetic materials, take a mean of six to eight hours to be processed, and supply false unfavorable charges – a scenario the place an individual has contracted the virus however the an infection stays undetected – of as little as three per cent.
In keeping with Dr Pramod Kumar, head of analysis at QuantLase, the lab’s new test takes solely seconds to manage. The individual being screened supplies a blood pattern. That is then inserted into the gear, and laser gentle is shone onto it. When the sunshine is scattered by cells, interference is used to create patterns on a display screen.
Dr Kumar defined that completely different cells have completely different signature patterns when uncovered to this gear. Wholesome blood cells create clear round rings, whereas contaminated blood cells produce a extra diffuse sample. This sample differs from an infection to an infection, and may allegedly be refined by using AI to particularly detect COVID-19.
The expertise has not but been authorized by the UAE authorities, however Abraham is hopeful.
“We have a very clear mandate to get this out quickly, and we are working very hard to ensure trials. The aim is to produce it locally, and ultimately to manufacture worldwide as we share this sophisticated equipment; economies of scale will reduce the cost of production,” he defined.
It was not clear simply what number of false negatives the brand new test supplies, which has been a priority for all novel checks proposed by researchers. With the UAE implementing wide-scale testing, together with screening residents in densely populated areas of the nation, test accuracy will stay of supreme significance because the nation works to restrict the outbreak.

Undergraduates Research Alongside Faculty through Summer Program
August 17, 2017
This summer, students at NYU Tandon School of Engineering traded beach days and binge watching for data sets, 3D printed neurons and testing the durability of composite materials. Through the Undergraduate Summer Research Program at NYU Tandon, undergraduates have the unique opportunity to work alongside professors and doctoral researchers on the cutting-edge research happening in Brooklyn.
In addition to celebrating the program’s 11th year of introducing Tandon students to laboratory research, 2017 also marked the first year the program featured equal participation from male and female students. “We are excited that more women are getting involved in STEM and specifically STEM research. They bring a necessary diversity to the program that enhances it at every turn,” Sara-Lee Ramsawak, the program’s coordinator and Associate Director of Academic Affairs, said.
“Through the program, students learn about what research is and how it works, and work in teams with students of all different backgrounds and at different academic levels. The program can help them to plan for their future and determine if research is a path they want to take,” Ramsawak said, adding that the students discover faculty mentors, take part in academic and career development workshops, and work with a unique and multidisciplinary group of colleagues and researchers, as the program welcomes students from NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai, as well as schools like Rutgers University and Michigan State.
On August 4, over 100 budding researchers gathered at MAGNET, the Media and Games Network, to present their research at a poster symposium. Read below to learn more about a few of the projects students worked on this summer:
Improving the White Cane and Models of Neurons, Bones, and Skeletal Muscle
A cohort working with chemical and biomolecular engineering lecturers Alexandra Seidenstein and Tommy S. Lee merged applied biology with technology in projects ranging from a modified white cane for the visually impaired, a Dash Cam that enables a smartphone’s front and rear camera to simultaneously record in vehicles, and 3D printed neurons, bones, and skeletal muscle that aid education through 3D orientation. Seidenstein shared that both she and Lee foster an interdisciplinary environment in their lab, ranging from students in biochemistry to computer science. “We also don’t have graduate students, so our undergraduates are running their own projects, which is a unique experience,” Seidenstein said.
“Typical white canes do not detect objects, and other options like guide dogs are very expensive to maintain,” explained Aida Aberra, an NYU Abu Dhabi student who worked on the Staff of Gandalf — an electronic transport aid that reimagines the white cane. Aberra and her fellow teammates Abhiroop CVK, a biomedical major from NYU Tandon and NYU College of Arts and Sciences, and Morgan Fender, a rising senior at Missouri University of Science and Technology, used sensors to detect obstacles and solenoid pins that alert the user through pulses. The Staff of Gandalf also took home the symposium’s top poster prize.
Two other projects turned towards 3D printing to visualize the structure of neurons, bones, and skeletal muscle at the molecular level. Xinyi Xu of NYU Shanghai, Vy-Linh Gale of NYU Tandon, and Maria Dooling of Arizona State University developed 3D demonstrations of the intricately detailed cells and synapses, as well as enhanced bone models of bone’s microstructure and cross-sections. “3D modeling can create clearer scientific visualizations for students, so complex scientific concepts can be printed and held in a student’s hand, offering them a tangible, better understanding,” Xu said. NYU Tandon student Mackensie Gross and Ian Wright from University of Rochester used 3D printers to model filaments in skeletal muscle, drastically improving current two-dimensional models.
Engineering Proteins for Drug Delivery and MRI-Monitoring
Chemical and biomolecular engineering student Erika Delgado-Fukushima joined professor Jin Kim Montclare’s laboratory this summer researching the ability of the coiled coil microfiber variant of the cartilage oligomeric matrix protein to self-assemble and bind to chemotherapeutic drugs like doxorubicin. With these engineered proteins capable of drug delivery, Delgado-Fukushima explained that continuing research is exploring whether binding certain molecules to the protein’s fibers, like iron oxide nano-particles, could make the delivery of the protein and attached doxorubicin more visible and easier to monitor through MRI. Montclare and fellow scientists recently published an article on a protein capsule that binds with doxorubicin and gene silencers to combat cancer, adding an exciting factor to Delgado-Fukushima’s research.
Pairing Information Theory with Fish Schooling
Within mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Maurizio Porfiri’s Dynamical Systems Laboratory, NYU Tandon students Antonios Gementzopoulus and Maxwell Rosen explored the validity of information theory to researching hydrodynamic interactions within swimming fish. Past theories on schooling fish have rested upon fluid dynamics and to better understanding schooling fish. As past theories have rested upon fluid dynamics, information theory and transfer entropy offer a model-free approach and could be a useful tool for researching the information flow between fish in schools. By simulating and tracking pitching airfoils traveling upstream and downstream, the team discovered that there is greater information flow when fish are closer together — an interaction that decreases with longer distances between fish.

Abu Dhabi, UAE: A space laboratory built to design, construct and test miniature satellites was launched at Masdar City on Monday. The Yahsat Space Laboratory was launched at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, which is now part of the newly created Khalifa University of Science and Technology. The laboratory is a collaboration between the Masdar Institute, Al Yahsat Satellite Communications Company and Orbital ATK. For the past two years, students, faculty and space industry engineers have worked on creating the laboratory, which has been established to develop the local space sector by cultivating Emirati undergraduate and graduate students in the field of space sciences. The creation of the laboratory – which includes monitoring, communication, three-dimensional printing and software development facilities – is set to graduate the institute’s first batch of engineering students in space sciences next month. "We are not looking to graduate technicians, we want to graduate scientists," said Dr Saif Al Mheiri, head of the space laboratory and assistant professor of mechanical and materials engineering at Masdar Institute. Using the space industry model of incorporating engineers from various disciplines on a single project, the institute brings together students pursuing master’s degrees in engineering from different fields in the space laboratory. "This master’s programme is unique in the country and the region," Dr Al Mheiri said. "It’s a master’s programme that emphasises the hands-on as well as the educational components." A lack of undergraduate engineering degrees focused on space sciences in UAE universities made finding students willing to pursue a master’s degree in space sciences hard. "Yes, it is a challenge but space-related problems are always challenging and push engineers to the limit. Once students understand this it motivates them and they feel excited [about the field]," said Dr Al Mheiri. The administration is working with New York University Abu Dhabi and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah to attract more students for its graduate programmes. One of the students working in the space laboratory said he was inspired to leave his first job when he heard about the programme. "I resigned from the petroleum industry to follow my dream of being an engineer in the space field," said Abdullah Al Sharif, 26. Working alongside engineers with decades of experience to build the space laboratory has given him invaluable experience. Mr Al Sharif, a mechanical engineering graduate, is working on refining the structure and systems of Mysat-1, the programme’s first educational miniature satellite, which is slated for launch next year to take images of the Earth from space. Mr Al Sharif is ensuring that the systems of the 10x10x10cm satellite are smoothly integrated and remain undamaged by the -violent shaking during its launch. "At Yahsat, we strongly believe that by complementing educational programmes with state-of-the-art facilities for learning and development, we can provide best-quality education," said Masood Mahmood, Yahsat’s chief executive. Dr Behjat Al Yousuf, interim provost at Masdar Institute, said the programme would help to advance projects such as the UAE’s mission to Mars in 2020. He said 12 students would graduate from the programme next month and the institute was aiming for just as many next year. © The National via Edarabia.com
