विश्व जननी आदिशक्ति माँ दुर्गा ने जब महिषासुर का वध कर दिया और तब ब्रह्मा आदि देवताओं ने माँ भगवती महेश्वरी दुर्गा जी का पूजन किया जिससे प्रसन्न होकर माँ भगवती प्रकट हुई और देवताओं से वर माँगने को कहा, तब देवताओं ने महेश्वरी दुर्गा जी बोला कि हे माँ महिषासुर जोकि पूरी सृष्टि के लिए कंटक समान था और सभी के दुःखों का कारण था आपने उस दुष्ट का अन्त कर दिया हम आपकी इस कृपा से ही सन्तुष्ट है हमें और किसी अनमोल वर की कामना नहीं है लेकिन आपके शब्द हमारे लिए आज्ञा है और आपने हमें वर माँगने के लिए कहा है इसलिए हे माता ऐसा मार्ग बताये जिससे आप शीघ्र प्रसन्न होकर विपत्ति में पड़े जीव की रक्षा करती हो।

      देवताओं के प्रार्थना करने पर माँ दुर्गा जी ने अपने गोपनीय 32 नामों के बारे में बताया जिनके स्मरण मात्र से कोई भी जीव समस्याओं और विपत्तियों से स्वयं की तत्काल रक्षा कर सकता है। दुर्गा जी के नामों को एक क्रम में पड़ा जाता है इसलिए इसे माला का बोला जाता है, यह नाम माला इस प्रकार है।

दुर्गा दुर्गार्तिशमनी दुर्गापद्वनिवारिणी।

दुर्गमच्छेदिनी दुर्गसाधिनी दुर्गनाशिनी।।

दुर्गतोद्धारिणी दुर्गनिहन्त्री दुर्गमापहा।

दुर्गमज्ञानदा दुर्गदैत्यलोकदवानला।।

दुर्गमा दुर्गमालोका दुर्गमात्मस्वरुपिणी।

दुर्गमार्गप्रदा दुर्गमविद्या दुर्गमाश्रिता।।

दुर्गमज्ञानसंस्थाना दुर्गमध्यानभासिनी।

दुर्गमोहा दुर्गमगा दुर्गमार्थस्वरुपिणी।।

दुर्गमासुरसहंन्त्री दुर्गमायुधधारिणी।

दुर्गमाङ्गी दुर्गमता दुर्गम्या दुर्गमेश्वरी।।

दुर्गभीमा दुर्गभामा दुर्गभा दुर्गदारिणी।

नामावलिमिमां यस्तु दुर्गाया मम मानवः।।

पठेत् सर्वभयानमुक्तो भविष्यति न संशयः।।

इस दुर्गामंत्रमाला का 108 बार मंत्र जाप करने से बड़े से बड़ा भय समाप्त होता है।
