DESIGNMIND: NEWSCHOOL IS “GREEN. BY DESIGN.”
Sustainability is one of the pillars of our curriculum. We teach our students, especially those in the design and architecture, and masters in construction management online, that everything they design, from clothing to furniture to buildings, as well as how those buildings are constructed, must make efficient use of resources. Sustainability is a fundamental and essential aspect of practice, another pillar of our curriculum.
Great designers are acutely aware of resources. It affects every aspect of their lives: It’s the coffee cup they use, the car they drive, the structures they design, and how they respect the environment and the people who live and work and worship there. I often tell students that design isn’t something you stop and start in your life. Design is your life. Sustainability has to join that circle of who you are. When you think about where we live and the resources we have, we are at a moment in time when we have to learn to use these resources in a much better way.
Our new School “Green. By Design.” initiative challenges us to be sustainable across the board. It reminds us to ask ourselves, Do I really need to print this out? Is this the best way to commute to campus? Can someone else in the Materials Lab use the scrap from my project? Should the structure I’m designing have a building envelope that will require less energy?
“Green. By Design.” is also a reminder that great things happen when we partner with our students. The idea and the drive behind it come from the collaboration between our Student Life office and our Student Council. They identified this way to connect our mission to our daily campus routines. One of our first actions will be to eliminate disposable cups by giving students bottles and mugs they can reuse. This may seem like a small effort, but we use 60,000 cups a year—enough to encircle our building 19 times!

NEWSCHOOL STUDENTS REIMAGINE ODOT BLOCKS IN PORTLAND’S CENTRAL EASTSIDE INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT
NewSchool of Architecture and Design will explore the Portland's Central Eastside through fresh lens of students who are focused on DEI and community.
Portland, Ore. (June 30 2021)Local architecture and engineering firm, Mackenzie, together with the NewSchool of Architecture and Design in San Diego completed its integrated design studio that brought together over 80 pupils from across the globe to redesign the ODOT blocks of the Portland's Central Eastside Industrial District. The studio has recently displayed ideas developed by students who started their design-led projects integrated in the fall of 2020, during the COVID epidemic, which involved about 20 students working virtually with students from Kuwait as well as Saudi Arabia.
In the course of this exclusive collaboration, students utilized ODOT Blocks to study urban analysis, criteria for site selection to ensure human-centered and sustainable urbanization, design parameters as well as design techniques and tools. Architectural students were divided into teams that were paired and involved in working with NewSchool interior graphic design and design students. From the 84 students that created conceptual sketches 12 designs were selected to be presented at an Virtual conferencehosted by Mackenzie on 30 June 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
The studios were all completed with three compulsory Architectural Practice classes, developed and taught by Rich Mitchell, contributing faculty at NewSchool and the former director of Mackenzie. Mitchell's classes offered definitions, concepts, as well as sources for project management and construction documents that focused on cost analysis, value control as well as evidence-based design.
"Preparing students to be able to work in the design and architecture industry will require more than just classes, hyper-visual design projects, and mastering the most recent digital software. Students who are practice-ready need to be able convince stakeholders that their plan is meeting the needs of communities," says Mitchell. "Through this redevelopment program for the ODOT Blocks in Portland, students were pushed to think outside of artistic aesthetics. Students were educated on private development, the feasibility of private development integrated environmental systems, materials, and inclusive methods to think about the demands of the community by using the real-world project."
The projects of the students followed an exact set of rules in line with Portland's Municipal Code, and received constant feedback and critique over three quarters from industry leaders, such as Mackenzie as well as BEAM Developers. The students also received supervision by an instructional team that include the Studio Coordinator and Head of Architecture Programs Daniela German, as well as contributing faculty Joe Bashaw, Amin Espandiari, Julio Medina, Tom Mulica as well as Goyo Ortiz.
"The Integrated Design Studio for Fourth Year's is the most extensive course in the NewSchool undergraduate program since we provide students with real-world designs and projects that combine four major architectural focuses: architectural design, construction engineering landscape design, and Interior design" states Deustch. "Through direct involvement in projects like ODOT Blocks, for example. ODOT Blocks students are able to prove their understanding in the field of integrated design and are better equipped for the profession of architectural design which is defined by the complexity of interactions within all of the neighborhood."
"We were able to bring different perspectives from the students in this group to develop some truly original ideas to ODOT Blocks. The students, many who worked on the project from outside the country could work with our design professionals and bring views from around the globe. It was enjoyable to see how they incorporated into their design thinking process." Says Dietrich Wieland, President of Mackenzie. "We here at Mackenzie are extremely pleased with the outcome of their efforts and believe that we are gaining the next generation of designers and architects."
"This project is the ideal illustration of an integrated educational, multidisciplinary and complete learning experience in which students were faced with a real-world problem with a high level of complexity, and were able to work with a broad range of experts and stakeholders who assisted them in framing the problem and develop their concepts. This is the type of education we seek to provide here at NewSchool," explains NewSchool Dean of the School of Design, Elena Pacenti, Ph.D.
The most recent ideas which were contracted by Prosper Portland for redevelopment, were developed master-planned and designed by the Portland-based developer Beam Development, and included the designers Hacker architects, Mackenzie along with Colas Construction. This project has been being delayed at the request of Portland's city.

DESIGNMIND: 5 DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF A PROFESSIONAL
In June, I had the honor of preparing remarks for the 98th Annual Business Meeting of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB). NCARB is responsible for the licensure of architects and has taken innovative steps to improve that process with the Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure. IPAL allows select institutions, including NewSchool, to offer accelerated programs so that students can be prepared to pursue licensure upon graduation.
Here is a condensed version of my message to NCARB:
What gives us credibility and value in the eyes of the public, potential clients, and those who will live, work, and worship in buildings and places designed and realized by architects? Over the course of many discussions with my very good friend Patrick Sullivan, former Chair of the Department of Architecture at California State Polytechnic University, we determined five distinguishing characteristics of a professional:
1. An Advanced/Recognized Education Experience
Every individual who chooses to study a profession must have the burning desire within themselves to pursue an education. The bedrock of respect that underlies the profession is dependent on a vital culture of exploration and design thought within the academy. The complexity of our time, the increasing complexity of our tools, and the rising expectations for professional service demand a rich, measured education experience. It is true that there are many alternate sources of knowledge to inform an individual. However, what is necessary is the intensely personal experience of an architectural education that has itself been rigorously assessed by a diverse group of peers from education, practice, and the public sector.
2. A Proper, Rigorous Internship Experience
There is much in practice that simply cannot be simulated or mimicked in the academy. The logistics surrounding a major project are staggering when taken out of the context of a highly qualified professional team. A rigorous learning experience within the structure of an office allows for the continuum of academy to practice to flourish. IPAL gives greater exposure to professional preparation through additional coursework that matches in-office experience. It stimulates the motivated student to complete curricular work and address the licensing exam years ahead of the present average. Because of the shadowing and internship experiences, partnerships between offices and schools are increasing, further enhancing the desired goal of bringing the academy and practice closer along the continuum.
3. The Accomplishment of Licensure Along with a Responsibility for Continuing Lifelong Learning
Many years ago, as a recent graduate, I wondered about the value of licensure. I was convinced that I could operate outside of the system. I soon learned that licensure was actually liberating. It was a capstone achievement that validated my education and it forced me to sum up my experience in practice. It became clear to me that it defined me and validated me as a professional with real responsibilities for the health, safety and welfare of people. It became my proof of the value of my work to the public. Because the process toward licensure is a milestone that ultimately validates the education and practice of the individual, both the academy and the office must take responsibility for mentoring and guiding the individual to licensure.
4. Voluntary Membership in a Professional Association Along with the Voluntary Acceptance of a Code of Ethics
Voluntary membership in a professional association opens opportunities to identify and interact with like-minded peers. This is a tradition that extends well into Western history through a system of guilds and clubs. Knowledge communities work to advance the body of information available to the profession through the sharing experiences, related scholarship and case studies from practice.
As important as voluntary membership in a professional association is, it is equally important to commit to the voluntary acceptance of a related code of ethics. The ethical conduct of the profession is dependent on the personal commitment of every member to a shared system of beliefs and implies that buildings will have a powerful consistency focused on human-centered design.
5. The Commitment to Pro Bono Activity Even as it May Lead to New Forms of Professional Activity
Truly, one of the most important aspects of a professional life is the understanding of the necessity of a commitment to the less fortunate of our society. As architectural professionals, we are more than architects. We are citizen architects and designers. It is activity that broadens our understanding of the world while we see to the quality of life, the public welfare, of even the most underserved among us. I believe that giving returns ten-fold to the profession. It increases our value to society because we have first demonstrated our value. It moves us to think beyond traditional roles for our critical and creative abilities. Our commitment beyond ourselves calls upon our better nature.
The common ingredient among each of the five marks of a professional is the unyielding commitment to raising the standards of the profession. This must be our shared commitment irrespective of the perspective we bring to this discussion. It will be foundation of the respect we have for each other and it will give us reason to trust each other.
