Mysterious Masroor

Our architectural inclination took us (H-K & family) to Mysterious Masroor temples in January 2018. Why mysterious? Because it has indistinct stories related to its existence. Lot of stories and questions came across by visiting this place and we bring it on to you for answers and for more inquisitiveness (Post in the comment box :) through our photographic journey.

Location: Masroor, Lahalpur, Himachal Pradesh which is 59.6 km from Jia village (Of course Jia is our reference point :)

Time taken: 1h 43min drive from Jia.

Altitude: 2500 ft above sea level. Jia is at 4114 ft.  This information actually helps in shedding off your layers :P.

 A great little drive with changing landscapes, even the sand color changes from brown to a reddish tone, made our way to these majestic rock cut temples. The temple complex caged in a metal railing boundary is accessed from the back side raising the curiosity of the visitor. The temples are set in the terrain in such a way that one doesn’t realize its magnificence until you see from the front. Moreover, the reflection of temple in the ‘kund’ opposite to it glorifies its presence.

It is stated that it was built for Draupadi, wife of Pandavas for her ablution purpose during their exile period from the kingdom. Really? These temples are that old and were built around 3081 BC? Let’s take a sneak peek into the other facts as well,

Story 1 (3081 BC) – Local tale narrates that around five thousand years ago; Pandavas of the Mahabharata built this temple and resided here during their incognito exile. The temples remain unfinished because they shifted from here as their identity and location was revealed.

Story 2 (Around 8 -9th Century AD) – It is assumed that these temples were built during the time same as of Kailasa temple at Ellora, Aurangabad, Maharashtra because of being rock cut in nature. It is suggested by scholars that this could be the work of unknown imperial rulers of Jalandhara kingdom of Punjab plains and might have remained as a capital-in-transit of the Jalandhara rulers and later the capital shifted to Nagarkot i.e. the Kangra Fort.

Story 3 (Tadda!!! - The Discovery) - The temples were first noted among the Objects of antiquarian interest in the Punjab and its dependencies, Lahore, 1875. However it continued to be hidden until 1913 H.L.Shuttleworth discovered and later description of these temples was published in 1915 by H. Heargreaves.

Story 4 (Shaivite converted to Vaishnavite in 1980’s?) – The main temple is known as the ‘Thakurdwara’ which means God’s (Thakur) place (dwara) i.e. the place of God. It enshrines stone images of Ram, Laxman and Sita which seems to of recent date. It is said that originally it was a Shiva temple because of the presence of Shiva on the doorway lintel of the central shrine and other Shaiv figural forms found in the temple complex.

But where’s the Nandi? Was it destroyed? Because presently a sacred Tulsi plant resides at the entrance of the temple shrine. Traditionally in Shiva temples, Nandi (the gate- guardian deity of Lord Shiva, depicted as a bull which also serves as the mount to the god Shiva) sits on a porch in front of the central temple.

Other visual thing that pops in our minds is the Buddha or Mahavira resembling figures on the Shikharas of the temples. Was there any relation to Buddhism or Jainism?

There might be some relation to Jainism because there is an ancient Jain temple of Lord Adinath present in the Kangra Fort also which was established by Raja Sansar Chand (I) in 1523 AD. So, there could be some influence.

If these temples are built around the late medieval period under the Gupta patronage when Ajanta-Ellora caves were built then there could be some Buddhist influence as well on the artists while building this beauty.

Architecturally, Masroor temples are one of the early phase temples built in Nagara style in Himachal Pradesh. Due to the remote locations and very secluded lifestyles of the people in the mountains there were very few shrines built in Nagara style temples before 8th century.

The main shrine faces north east and two cruciform shrines, which are independently carved from the main ridge, flank the both sides of the temple. In the present scenario it is difficult to identify the no. of Shikharas. According to various scholars fifteen or seventeen Shikharas of Valabhi type (rectangular buildings with a roof that rises into a vaulted chamber) are observed. 

Iconography on the temple walls and Shikharas has weathered a lot over the period of time. Efforts are being done by Archeological Survey of India (ASI) to conserve these temples. Would love to explore the techniques of restoration in our upcoming blogs.

The temple is carved out of a natural sandstone rock of size 148ft x 137ft. The ‘kund’ in front of the temple is around 165ft x 82ft. Height of the temple is varying from 40ft- 50ft ranging according to different shikharas (10 times of me :P). The photo below can give you idea of scale in relation to human beings.

Imagine a sight of lighting diyas (lamp) or water lilies in pink in the pool. What an abode to God! We are mesmerized :)

While writing this blog as a guest writer at huntout, I am very excited and supercharged to share my story of the most promising land and hill station known as Mcleod Ganj. I will be sharing my amazing experience with you all. Mcleod Ganj is a popular destination among hikers and trekkers, so let me take you to the hill town that boasts of alluring bounties such as amazing weather conditions, thrilling adventure, idyllic landscapes, and vibrant culture. One fine day I was busy working in my office when my friend approached me & asked me whether I had ever been to a place called Mcleod Ganj. I had heard about the place for the very first time. I was quite confused with the name as it was a little difficult to pronounce. But then he showed me some beautiful pictures and told me to visit there. I was so fascinated with the pictures and the beauty of the place that I decided to visit this place anyhow. So I planned a solo trip by googling and getting the information online. I planned my budget affordably according to accommodation and travel costs.

How one can visit the place?

You can visit Mcleod Ganj by flight as well as by road, but I will suggest flight as the road trip is quite time-consuming & tiresome. I was flying from Mumbai to Delhi by taking an early flight To reach Delhi airport it takes around 2.5 hours. Once you have landed in Delhi you can take a bus for Himachal which will take more 7-8 hours. There are numerous other ways to reach Himachal faster like you can take a flight from Delhi to Gaggal or Kangra Airport at Dharmashala. These airports are just 20 km away from Mcleod Ganj. Airlines like Air India Regional, SpiceJet, and Jagson Airlines operate their regular flights from these cities for Dharmshala. ( Check the prices online beforehand)

Where one can stay in pocket-friendly budget?

There are a lot of hotels in Mcleod Ganj where one can easily stay without even doing a pre-booking. Your stay depends on your budgets as well. I was having my budget planned so I had chosen a hostel to stay, but trust me if you look at the rooms of the hostel it was way better than we can imagine and the view from the window was just breathtaking. So for all the Solo travelers if you are ever visiting this place, then don't waste your money in any kind of luxurious stay, as the hostel stay is great and you can always save a good amount. Besides staying in a hostel has other pros as well. You'll always find like-minded people or other solo travelers staying in the same hostel & you might end up making some good travel buddies.

City Transport Facilities

You will easily get transport as there are many buses and shared jeeps available. Jeeps are priced between Rs 100 - Rs 150 for 5-6 kilometers ( The prices can vary according to the season and on the number of people traveling. Always remember to bargain😉)

Best food to eat

You can literally taste the flavors of north India in budget-friendly prices. Unfortunately, I don't have any picture of the food that I had during my visit to the place. But trust me the food is pretty cheap and of good quality. You can buy it at an average cost of around Rs500 for two.

Shiva Cafe Do not forget to visit the best cafes in Mcleod Ganj, Shiva cafe, and Himalaya cafe which are covered by the beautiful mountains & where you will seriously get into a trance state with great peace of mind.

Shopping Experience

Let me be frank, there aren't many places to shop in Mcleod Ganj & even if you find shopping joints/centers, there isn't much worthwhile to buy & carry all the way home. But ya, if you get some local bags made of jute, colorful shawls, sweaters jackets, etc you can buy them but the prices of these products are not pocket friendly. But if you have bargaining skills you can end up with a really good deal. If someone asks me to rate this place from 1-10 then I will give it an 8, because of the beauty, nature, and tradition of the place. And my overall experience while visiting this place was fantastic( Thanks to my friend ). I had visited the place in monsoon so I will recommend people to visit in the same season as the weather would be cold and the place more beautiful. And if you visit this place then don't miss the triund trek as it will show you some breathtaking views & the real beauty of nature.

🕉 🚩 The Masrur Temples, also referred to as Masroor Temples or Rock-cut Temples at Masrur, is an early 8th-century complex of rock-cut Hindu temples in the Kangra Valley of Beas River in Himachal Pradesh, India. The temples face northeast, towards the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas. They are a version of North Indian Nagara architecture style, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Saura traditions of Hinduism, with its surviving iconography likely inspired by a henotheistic framework. Much of the Masrur's temple's sculpture and reliefs have been lost. They were also quite damaged, most likely from earthquakes. A British empire officer Henry Shuttleworth visited and photographed the temples in 1913, calling it a "Vaishnava temple" and claiming in his report that he was the first European to visit them. He wrote a paper on the temples, which was published by the journal The Indian Antiquary. He shared his findings with Harold Hargreaves, then an officer of the Northern Circle of the Archaeology Survey of India. Hargreaves knew more about Hindu theology, noticed the Shiva linga in the sanctum and he corrected Shuttleworth's report. Hargreaves wrote up his tour and published his photographs and observations in 1915 as a part of the ASI Annual Report Volume 20. Hargreaves acknowledged the discovery that a draftsman in his office had already toured, measured and created temples plans and sections in 1887, and that some other ASI workers and Europeans had visited the temple in 1875 and after 1887. The Hargreaves report described the site as many temples, listed iconography at these temples from different Hindu traditions, mentioned his speculations on links with Mahabalipuram monuments and Gandhara art, and other theories. The Hargreaves text became the introduction to Masrur temples for guides by reporters with little to no background knowledge of Indian temple traditions or Hindu theology. According to Meister, these early 20th century writings became a source of the temple's misidentification and misrepresentations that followed. The temples were carved out of monolithic rock with a shikhara, and provided with a sacred pool of water as recommended by Hindu texts on temple architecture. The temple has three entrances on its northeast, southeast and northwest side, two of which are incomplete. Evidence suggests that a fourth entrance was planned and started but left mostly incomplete, something acknowledged by the early 20th-century colonial era archaeology teams but ignored leading to misidentification and erroneous reports . Masroor Rock Temples – Himachal Pradesh

 Masroor Monolithic Rock cut temples, dating back to the 8th century is a little known world heritage site. The day was heavily overcast when I set off for Masroor, about 40 kms from Kangra on the Nagrota Suriyan Link road. The road to the temples is in pretty good condition ; espied several green signboards (ASI) marking the route to Masroor. Masroor Temple A gorgeous vista of hewn rocks met my eyes, leaving me awed with its magnificence. I was once again amazed at the fascinating nugget of history and architecture tucked away in Himachal Pradesh. Masroor Rock Temple Kangra Himachal Pradesh Though not such a big place, the entire structure is huge and towering; constructed alongside a rectangular pool of water and surrounded by the majestic Dhauladhar trees. The temples stood out tall and straight, in one line; I could make out Buddha and Ganesha faces cut in the rock face here and there. Masroor Rock Temple Kangra Himachal Pradesh The temples (15 in all) are carved out of monolithic rocks by the artisans by hand in the Indo-Aryan style. The entire structure is constructed on top of a 2500 feet high hillock. All the temples are in continuity and built around a central shrine, which dominates the center and has three stone images of Ram, Laxman and Sita. These deities were decorated with colored cloths and we could make out that people come out here to pay their reverence as in any local temple. Masroor Rock Temple Kangra Himachal Pradesh The shikhars of some of the temples remain standing and are a supreme display of the craftsmen of the 7th -8th century who overcame the limitations of the existing rock structures to shape and carve their creations. Masroor Rock Temple Kangra Himachal Pradesh These richly carved cave temples are the only rock shrines of their kind in North of India. Another example of rock cut temples in India are the Ajanta-Ellora caves. The earthquake of 1905 devastated some of the beauty of this gorgeous piece of architecture, leading to the ASI removing several of the carved panels to the Shimla museum for preservation and display. Masroor Rock Temple Kangra Himachal Pradesh The place had an air of neglect; the signboards were rusting, paint was peeling, writing was fading – difficult to read and make out what was written there. The ticket counter was also bereft; one soul came out of nowhere to issue the tickets. There was a small chai shop next to the pool of water; other than there is nothing else around here. If not for the pouring rain and chilling winds, I would have probably spent some more time here to revel in this gorgeous chapter of history. Thanks to the stinging rains, I couldn’t take as many pictures as I would have liked to.
