THEY WEAR THEIR MASKS WELL, different masks for different parts of the day. today his mask is pretending he’s ok --that he doesn’t want to reach out and hold her when she talks to him like that. he wants to pretend that sentiment doesn’t haunt him as well, the memory of them sitting like a tattoo on his heart. 

but what a good run we had. he wants to say it, but hates the finality of it. reality stings like alcohol rubbing over a fresh wound. losing barbara...it’s a wound that doesn’t close overnight. 

first impulse is always to joke, distance himself from those emotions by pretending he isn’t hurting as well. but she knows him too well to get away with that --she knew him well enough that they’d planned a forever that couldn’t quite happen. 

he offers her the truth. ❛  yeah. you were always my favorite ‘almost’ too.  ❜ lips purse, silence simmering between them.   ❛  in another life, maybe it worked out for us.  ❜

         “ yeah, well, i’m not all that equipped for familial troubles.     . . . at least with barry. ” they don’t argue -- not really. it’s simple enough, saying you hate bickering with family -- but when it’s family you wished for, when your first didn’t care . . . any animosity sits atop your shoulders with a harrowing weight. the sort of weight that makes him wonder if found family could ever be lost -- if his uncle would see him as less of a nephew. “ i’m too old to get bent over this sort of stuff. and you have better things to do than play therapist for me. ”
