Citroën’s purchase of #Maserati in 1968 seemed like a good idea at the time, but the costs incurred on various projects at the French automaker (and at Maserati) in the early 70s, and the 1973 oil crisis, eventually ran the well dry, resulting in Citroën having to liquidate Maserati and ultimately it’s own sale to Peugeot. In the end the Italian government and Alejandro de Tomaso stepped in and bought Maserati, saving it from oblivion. It was Citroën’s cash infusion in ’68 that made the Merak, and its big brother the Bora, possible. The mid-engined revolution had largely passed by Maserati by ’67, and with volumes small, Maserati didn’t have the cash to design a brand new mid-engined platform - but with Citroën’s resources, they suddenly did. And the Bora proved to be a very advanced, very civilized car. If the V8 Bora was the zenith of classic V8 Masers, the #Merak was the more practical sports car - lighter, more responsive, and cheaper. A cheaper variant of the Bora could do battle with the Ferrari Dino, Lamborghini Uracco, and Porsche 911, or so the thinking went, and by sharing costs with the Bora (the chassis and body) and Citroën’s SM (the engine, transaxle, and hydraulic components), could be developed cheaply. The Merak, which debuted for 1972, also got a pair of tiny seats in the back to make it a 2+2, adding a degree of practicality though no adults would ever want to sit back there. Like the Bora it was a Giugiaro design. The heart of the Merak was the Alfieri-designed 90-degree V6, primarily a 3-liter as in the SM but available as a 2.0 for a tax special in Italy (the rare Merak 2000 GT). After 1975 there was also a higher-compression Merak SS. Maserati gradually recovered during the late 70s and the Merak remained a good earner into 1983, long after the cancellation of the Bora (the traditional Khamsin sold better), with technical updates gradually replacing some of the Citroën pieces. In the end, 1,830 Meraks were built - a huge number compared to most other classic Masers and ultimately bested only by the 3500GT and the QIII/Royale. Meraks were cheap for years, but no longer - even when they���re sporting a bit of rust! #MaseratiMerak #1970s
