On this day |Mary became the first Queen Regnant in the history of England! At eleven o’clock Sunday 1 October, Mary departed from the Tower of London for her coronation at Westminster Abbey.“The crowning of a Queen who would rule in her own right was a completely new event in England, but the religious ceremonial of the coronation itself was five hundred years old and Mary was determined to be crowned according to the old custom.”  She wore her hair loose with a circlet of gold around it, in the way queen consorts did. But she was not a queen consort and she made that clear when she chose to walk to the Abbey instead of riding on a litter like her grandmother and so many other Tudor consorts had done. Katherine of Aragon’s dream to see her daughter sole Queen had come true, she’d seen her mother at the head of armies and proving herself equal if not better than any man and doing more for education than her predecessors and husband alike. If her mother was proof that women could rule then her daughter could rule as well, and as Lisle pointed out, Mary presented herself not as a demure, inexperienced woman but in fact a woman of high pragmatism and as a warrior Queen and monarch in her own right.
