Gabrielle, by Mary Francis Shura. Of all the books in the series, this one takes the lead with red flags.
Man number one is a performer on Gabrielle’s father’s showboat, and is constantly sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong. Gabrielle considers him to be a disappointment and a pest, and that’s how he is referenced for most of the story.
Man number two is a stalker. He and Gabrielle meet in a situation reminiscent of Aurora and Phillip in Sleeping Beauty, and he is convinced that she is the love of his life (even though he is already engaged to be married). As the show boat moves from town to town he follows it, becoming aggressive when he is not allowed to board.
While Gabrielle has a little more sense in recognizing that she is attracted to him but can’t yet call it love, she still feels the need to get to know him better. Somehow her father agrees to let her spend a week at his farm. What’s even more astounding is that the man’s mother consents to the visit, even though she wants nothing to do with Gabrielle and treats her rudely the whole time.
Throughout the visit Gabrielle longs to be back on the river, but the man pressures her to give it up and become a farmer’s wife. It becomes obvious to Gabrielle that he doesn’t see her as a human being, and is only enchanted by her show boat act. In his mind, Gabrielle is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
After she is disillusioned about man number two, Gabrielle starts to see man number one in a new light. Once he confesses his intentions and a misunderstanding is cleared up, Gabrielle realizes that they have more in common than she originally let herself believe.

Absolutely adore old books. Found some of my old books in my sister's place and the two I picked up are "The Season of Silence" by Mary Francis Shura and "The Guardian" by Nicholas Sparks. I haven't read either yet but the story the book itself tells makes me emotional in its own way cuz... "The Season of Silence" was a book from my elementary school's library, it was about to be thrown out and as a local library visitor, I asked if it's okay to take some books.
There's stamps on the book of a different school, so it most likely belonged there before reaching mine. On the back of it is the library cards, 6 people borrowed this book, 5 has dates on them but only 3 has the year. One borrowed it on "86, two borrowed it on "87. I wonder what those people thought of it when they borrowed it, I wonder how much they care for the book with how well its condition is right now, not a single folded page, not a single writing on it. In fact, the book looks as good as new. I wonder if any of the people that borrowed this book was changed by its story.
The second book I have, "The Guardian" is something I don't really remember where I got it from, maybe it was given by the neighbour, or maybe it was from somewhere else. It has a name written with an orange highlighter on its side along with a number, "Jackie 25..." There's highlighter inside the book, "Jackie" highlighted every name they find, they highlighted the occupation, the description, any notable features of all the mentioned characters. They highlighted singular words like "permutations" and "interspersed." But the hightlights stopped on Chapter 8.
I wonder what went through their mind as they read this book, was it for a project for them to highlight names? Or were they just so immersed with its story they just had to make sure to remember as much details as possible? I wonder what they thought of when they found such unfamiliar words, highlighting it to look it up later on a dictionary? I wonder what happened for them to not continue until Chapter 8. I wonder how they'll feel, wherever they are, if they knew that the book they once had and highlighted on is still surviving and on the hands of someone else, I woder how they'd feel then.
#aria rants#these two books making me emotional thinkin bout the ppl that read them before me and i havent even read the contents yet at all#i love books so much. its just so amazing how the books i am holding rn were once held by others and read and its story enjoyed

Marilee, by Mary Francis Shura. The only book in the series that involves three potential love interests. One of them is little more than a charming hunk, and even when he says something offensive, Marilee is quick to brush it aside because he's the hottest man in Jamestown. She easily confuses love with infatuation.
Another love interest at first seems like a better choice, but he and Marilee display a lot of resentment towards each other. The last love interest is the most reasonable, but is absent for almost the entire story.
In the end I do not think that Marilee made the best decision.

Jessica, by Mary Francis Shura. This story is a jumble of toxic men, culminating in the frontier version of Judge Judy.
Jessica grew up with man number one, but she’s always been afraid of him due to his intense personality. He assumes that they are engaged and oversteps his bounds on numerous occasions. Things get out of hand because Jessica can’t work up the courage to reject him, and while he’s in the wrong for jumping to conclusions, she’s also in the wrong for leading him on.
Man number two is a newcomer whose circumstances cause him to become obliged to Jessica. She loses her one chance at independence because she is forced to drop everything to help him, and as a reward he is rude and ungrateful. With several months of resentment and secrets between them, I do not think that a romantic relationship would be healthy.
Man number three, a Cheyenne warrior, is the best behaved and most empathetic of the bunch, but their relationship is star-crossed. In the end Jessica is able to move on, and views their time together as a lesson learned.
Man number four is a wild card, whose sole purpose is to cause a rift between Jessica and one of her friends.
Throughout all this, Jessica’s relationship with her father rapidly deteriorates. It’s he who forces Jessica to help man number two, and lays guilt trips whenever she hesitates. When man number three comes along, there is no more trust between them.
Jessica would have been better off distancing herself from all these people and experiencing life outside of the homestead, if not outside of Kansas altogether. Instead because her life is entangled with so many men, she has to fight for her reputation.

Diana, by Mary Francis Shura. Being about the Lewis and Clark Expedition, I really want to like this book. Unfortunately, the timeline of the Expedition proves to be a disadvantage to the plot.
Neither love interest starts off strong. One proclaims love at first sight, while the other calls Diana brainless. In the end Diana is the problematic one, leaving both men hanging for over two years because she’s too young to make a commitment.
Man number two should have been a throwaway. Despite what Diana thinks, they really don’t have much in common. She doesn’t understand the difference between spending leisure time outside and roughing it in the wilderness.
The first man would have been a far better choice. Not only is he from a more comprable social background to Diana, but he is a kind and empathetic person. Diana’s ultimate rejection of him feels contrived, involving a random plot twist followed by an entire year passing within a few pages.
