After flopping on Broadway after 36 performances in 2011, Frank Wildhorn's Bonnie and Clyde played two limited West End runs in 2022 and 2023 following a concert starring Jeremy Jordan and Frances Mayli McCann, who replaced Laura Osnes after she scuttled her stage career by revealing herself as an anti-vaxxer.
Following the West End runs, Bonnie and Clyde is now going on a UK and Ireland tour! The tour stars Katie Tonkinson as Bonnie Parker, Sam Ferriday as Marvin "Buck" Barrow, and Danny Hatchard and Alex-James Hatton as Clyde Barrow, with Nate Landskroner as the Clyde Alternate.

MAYWEATHER CONTRE PACQUIAO : QUI VA L’EMPORTER ?
Dans la nuit de samedi, le monde aura les yeux rivés sur le combat du siècle opposant les deux meilleurs boxeurs de leur génération.
Des chiffres et des chiffres
Après cinq années de tractations, les années 10 tiennent enfin leur affrontement de légende, de ceux qui bâtissent la mythologie du noble art (Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis, Sugar Ray Leonard- Marvin Hagler, Joe Louis-Max Schmeling…).
L’attente autour de l’évènement était telle que la promotion a été réduite au strict nécessaire (annonce faite par une simple photo sur les réseaux sociaux, conférence de presse unique…), ce qui n’a pas empêché les 16 800 places du casino MGM Grand Garden Arena de Las Vegas de trouver preneurs en moins de 60 secondes (pour des prix compris entre 1 500$ et 7 500$ !) ou d’atomiser les précédents records en matière de pay-per-view.
Sans surprise le combat sera de loin le plus lucratif de l’histoire. Quel que soit le résultat les deux hommes vont chacun empocher une somme à six zéros – le décompte donne mal à la tête.
Bien sûr tout ne se résume pas aux dollars. Bien malin qui pourrait estimer la magnitude du précédent « combat du siècle » entre Muhammad Ali et Joe Frazier en 1971 s’il avait lieu comme MayPac à l’ère digitale - sans parler des combats de l'entre-deux-guerres.
Une tenue trop tardive ?
Nombreuses sont les voix qui déplorent le manque d’intérêt pugilistique de cette confrontation. Plus proches des 40 que des 30, il est vrai que Pacman (36 ans) et Money (38 ans) ne sont théoriquement plus au top de leurs capacités physiques.
Pourtant dans les faits rien n’est moins sûr. D’une part parce que les sportifs vieillissent beaucoup mieux à notre époque, mais surtout parce que si l’on se concentre sur leurs dernières sorties respectives, aucun signe de déclin évident n’est observé.
Après avoir donné une leçon au prodige mexicain Canelo Álvarez, Mayweather a certes été mis en ballottage par Marcos Maidana (et encore seulement sur quelques rounds), mais lors du match revanche on a assisté à une démonstration de boxe (une de plus).
De son côté Manny Pacquiao s’est parfaitement remis de son annus horribilis (en 2012 il était mis KO par Marquez, puis perdait sur une décision très contestée face à Bradley) en corrigeant avec la manière ses trois adversaires suivants, dont Bradley.
Et quand bien même les deux hommes ne seraient plus à leur apogée, cela ne signifie pas pour autant que le spectacle proposé sera moins attrayant. Paradoxalement le fait de perdre un peu en vitesse garantit souvent un surplus d’action face à un boxeur défensif.
Après tout quand Ali et Frazier se sont affrontés pour la troisième fois, il était clair que leurs plus belles années étaient derrière eux. Thrilla in Manilla demeure néanmoins l’un des plus beaux combats de poids-lourds de l’histoire.
À l’inverse on se souvient qu’en 2007 Mayweather-Oscar De La Hoya en avait déçu plus d’un.
Surtout ce choc des titans déchaîne toujours autant, si ce n’est plus, les passions. Ces cinq années d’attente ont magnifiquement servi de tremplin promotionnel, drainant par là même tout un public pas forcément familier avec les subtilités du noble art.
Le meilleur attaquant contre le meilleur défenseur
Bien que son piètre niveau d’anglais lui donne l’air empoté et malgré son image de « good guy » (fervent chrétien, actions caritatives…), ne vous y trompez pas, une fois sur le ring Manny Pacquiao est d’une férocité sans égale.
Premier boxeur sacré champion du monde dans huit catégories différentes, il possède une force de frappe unique, doublée d’une endurance à toute épreuve qui lui permet de cogner sous tous les angles sans jamais relâcher la pression.
Une agressivité dont peuvent témoigner des boxeurs du calibre de Ricky Hatton, De La Hoya ou Miguel Cotto qui après s’être inclinés avec les honneurs face à Mayweather, se sont littéralement fait démolir par un Pacman complètement déchaîné.
Mayweather n’a jamais fait face à une telle vélocité en mouvement. Pas étonnant qu’avec ce pédigrée, Ali, Tyson, Holyfield ou encore Foreman voient en lui le favori.
Enfin certains soulignent que le fait que Manny soit gaucher le favorise. Beaucoup de boxeurs ont du mal à ajuster leur stratégie face à un southpaw. En 47 rencontres Money n’en a d’ailleurs affronté que huit.
« 45 ont essayé, 45 ont échoué »
De son côté, The Best Ever, le nouveau surnom que se donne Mayweather, a évidemment pléthore d’arguments à faire valoir, avec en premier lieu sa précision.
Quand seulement 17% des coups de poings de ses adversaires l’atteignent, 41% des siens font mouche ! Une statistique tout bonnement incroyable qui doit autant à son jeu de jambes et ses réflexes, qu’à sa science du rapport de force et son éthique de travail irréprochable.
Sur le plan physique, là encore avantage à l’américain qui est plus grand : 1 mètre 73 contre 1 mètre 69, mais qui bénéfice surtout d’une allonge supérieure de 13 centimètres ! Un atout crucial d’autant plus lorsque l’on axe sa boxe sur l’aspect défensif – cela permet de garder son adversaire à distance.
Point non-négligeable, Money est en charge tous les aspects du combat (rémunération, date, catégorie…), ce qui lui donne automatiquement l’ascendant. Pacquiao a beau clamer qu’il est parfaitement à l’aise avec son rôle de challenger, les caractères de la trempe de Mayweather ne sont jamais aussi forts que lorsqu’ils se sentent forts.
Quelle sera la physionomie de la rencontre ?
Si les deux hommes affichent un total de 64 KO à eux deux, il est cependant peu probable que le combat s’arrête avant la limite. Excepté son coup en traître contre Victor Ortiz, Mayweather n’a envoyé personne au tapis ces huit dernières années, tandis que le denier KO du philippin remonte à 2009.
Une situation qui avantagerait indéniablement Mayweather passé maître dans l’art de s’attirer les faveurs des juges. Autant lorsqu’il s’agit de vendre des tickets il est capable de toutes les outrances (dernièrement il se déclarait même meilleur qu’Ali), autant sur le ring il agit en gestionnaire prudent et avisé.
Une stratégie que son rival cherchera à bousculer par tous les moyens. Si Mayweather perd nettement les premiers rounds (ce qui lui arrive assez fréquemment), il ne pourra plus se contenter de guetter les imprudences de Manny pour porter ses coups. Il devra alors chercher l’affrontement face à un Pacquiao qui n'attend que ça.
Dès lors le combat risque de se transformer en une guerre de tranchées où chaque homme devra aller au bout de lui-même pour s’asseoir sur le trône de la boxe mondiale.
Et le vainqueur sera…
Si l’on en croit les bookmakers, l’issue la plus probable serait… un match nul – les côtes s’élèvent actuellement à 8 contre 1.
En revanche quelle que soit l’issue, aucun boxeur ne devrait perde la face. Avec de telles forces en présence la défaite ne peut être qu’honorable.
Reste que ce qui pourrait arriver de mieux à la boxe serait une victoire controversée de Pacman. Ce résultat entraînerait automatiquement la tenue d’une revanche (probablement déjà inscrite dans les contrats), puis d’une belle, offrant ainsi au monde une nouvelle trilogie de légende.

Boxing is a sport that exposes a fighter's strengths and weaknesses under the brightest lights. Even those who have proven to be ranked amongst the annals of the all-time greats have shown that even they can be exposed.
Throughout the history of boxing, there have been few fighters who have had a career like Panama’s Roberto “Hands of Stone” Duran (103-16, 70 KOs).
With a career that spanned over four decades and 119 fights, there have been many ebbs and flows of positivity and negativity in Duran’s time spent inside the squared circle.
British filmmaker Mat Hodgson in his new documentary “I Am Duran” takes a look at the cultural and political aspects of his life that had an impact on his boxing career. The film succeeds in showcasing why Duran is considered a legend and in many respects helps that legend grow.
“It’s drama, people can relate to drama at the end of the day,” stated Hodgson in an interview with Frontproof Media in association with RBR Boxing. “Whether it’s about boxing or whether it’s about aliens landing. It’s drama. That’s what you need in a film to draw in those other audiences.”
Hodgson is no stranger to the world of boxing as he directed a documentary on former British world champion Ricky Hatton in 2013 called “Night of the Fight: Hatton’s Last Stand”. The documentary surrounded Hatton’s final fight of his career against Vyacheslav Senchenko.
Much like Hodgson’s film on Hatton, “I Am Duran” does focus on certain fights in Duran’s career that helped progress the film’s story. Duran’s Lightweight career in some respects takes a backseat as only one match from his time in the weight class is highlighted.
“It’s difficult because you can’t show everything,” said Hodgson. “You want to show everything, but you have to select, you have to edit, you have to filter. And we felt that there were some pillars to Duran’s career that we would use as pillars to our story.”
Most fans and pundits when it comes to Duran’s career will focus mainly of his fights with the “Fab Four” with Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler.
While these bouts do have a large portion of focus throughout the film, some of the best stories of the Panamanian’s time in the ring are lesser-celebrated matchups where the focus is strictly on Duran.
The one Lightweight bout that is featured in the film is Duran’s first world title victory in June of 1972. At the time Duran was only 21 years of age, and he was challenging veteran Ken Buchanan for the WBA Lightweight championship at Madison Square Garden.
Duran would ultimately stop Buchanan after the thirteenth round to win his first world title. The fight highlights the ferocity in which Duran fought at even such a young age.
In the documentary, Buchanan is interviewed, stating, “I was a boxer, he was a fighter.”
Throughout the film, there is a theme of internalized anger with Duran. In many instances, Duran’s life outside of the ring influenced how he performed inside the ring.
Whether it is from his lack of a relationship with his father, which is only briefly touched on in the film, or his being raised in the dangerous “Canal Zone” of Panama, Duran carried anger with him anytime he stepped between the ropes.
“You’re really starting this at rock bottom, and he would have had no ambition in life because that was what would been drilled into him by his environment as a young boy,” stated Hodgson. “He’s not the first fighter to have been born to abject poverty. But he had a brutal, brutal upbringing.
And it’s horrific to think a young boy could go through that. I think that’s where the anger would have come out. He is an angry fighter, and I think that’s a product of that environment for sure.”
One of the significant bouts highlighted in the film is Duran’s fight with Davey Moore for the WBA Junior Middleweight title. The match took place on Duran’s 32nd birthday on June 16, 1983, in front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden.
With the film showcasing Duran at his weakest in and out of the ring, specifically in the aftermath of the “No Mas" bout with Leonard, the fight with Moore shows a resurgence for a fighter that thought he lost more than just a boxing match.
The fight with Moore contributed to Duran receiving The Ring Magazine’s Comeback of the year in 1983. To this day Duran is the only fighter to win the award twice as he also received the award in 1989.
The politics of Panama that coincide with Duran’s career are shown in the film with a focus on political figures like Omar Torrijos and Manuel Noriega. The film accomplishes in showing just how much of a legend Duran is viewed as in Panama.
Panamanian political commentator Juan Carlos Tapia in the film, states, “There is always a mix of legend and reality about the heroes of a country.”
Duran comes from an era in the sport that is considered to be one of the best and is often viewed as a ‘golden era.’ With the boxing world and the world, in general, having changed so much since Duran’s prime, it is doubtful that we will see many fighters like him in the future.
“There was kind of, they thought a bit more liberated, I would say back then boxers, it felt like there wasn’t tactical master plan of a career path,” said Hodgson. “We’re seeing it a lot now, people waiting and waiting. That didn’t happen in that era. These guys were monsters who just took each other on.”
Boxing, as a whole for years, has been categorized as a niche sport, a sport that has had its death called upon for decades. However, what drives sports are relationships and characters.
Few characters in boxing history have sustained a relationship with boxing fans quite like Roberto Duran. Boxing may be a niche sport, but the story behind the man is something that all people can have something in common with.
“I think that Duran is a film that we’re exceptionally proud of and hopefully it will stand the test of time,” stated Hodgson. Boxing fans are so enthusiastic. They are not like other sports fans. I’ve done other sports, and you get a mixed response sometimes, often because other sports are quite tribal. But Boxing seems quite an open sport as far as fans go. People love talking boxing.”
Boxing is a sport like all others that will continue to change and evolve as time passes.
What “I Am Duran” brings to the forefront is what it means to be a hero. Duran is a hero in Panama, not a perfect one, but a diverse one that brings people of all types together in unison.
"I Am Duran" isn't just a documentary about a boxer, but a story about the human condition told through the eyes of a cultural hero.
