davis cup round 1 qualifiers, switzerland vs spain
spain's c team made a great account of themselves actually!!! was there much competition. no. but not one guy playing this tie had ever won a singles match for spain so this was a big deal for all of them lol.
rcb: making his davis cup debut at the age of 31! won his match in straight sets. SO happy about it, impossible not to be happy for him. (also the zendaya laugh at ferru above... i approve.)
martinez: also won in straight sets, for his first dc singles victory ever. (5 previous ties, mostly doubles.) he teared up talking about how much it meant to play the singles spot and win. "i've played tennis my whole life for this."
landaluce: giant 193cm child also making his debut via the consolation match. did not win but made it exciting, had two match points and took the supertiebreak to 16-14. one big ^_^ emoji across rfet socials, I'm Just Happy To Be Here. wait just discovered his nickname is tin tin, this is fantastic.
martinez/munar: jaume munar played exactly one previous davis cup tie, eight years ago, a singles match he lost as spain were steamrolled by serbia. so maybe he'd like to pretend this is his debut too? anyway they won in straight sets which did not surprise me at all after watching them at ao. you will be hearing more about this.
next up: qualifiers round 2 vs denmark in september aka RUNECARAZ... hopefully? stay healthy and don't fuck this up.
#spanish scrubtopia#me coming out of ao25 like kanye water bottle tweet oh great now i've gotta be responsible for these mediocre tennis players#esp munar/martinez who unfortunately i'd gotten attached to even BEFORE daviscup dot com started talking up their special friendship#i mean let's be clear i still mostly care inasmuch as their performance reflects on my fave. but it's a slippery slope.#anyway. they will never make me hate the davis cup!#jaume munar#pedro martinez#roberto carballes baena#martin landaluce#davis cup 2025

AO MS Q2: Martin Landaluce def. James Kent Trotter 6-4, 7-5 Match Stats

📸 9Now Australia
J.K. Trotter visibly tried to step up in the second set, but it almost culminated when M. Landaluce slipped midway through serving for the match as he tried to apply more pressure from the baseline. Nonetheless, the latter's point construction helped him navigating more pressing moments near the end of the second set, thus securing his break-back before serving for the match to complete his feat. As a result, M. Landaluce converted 3 of his 7 chances to break compared to J.K. Trotter's 33% break point conversion rate.
Besides, it appeared that both players had their service game strengths throughout this match. Landing 67% of his first serves, M. Landaluce won 82% of his first serve points even though J.K. Trotter scored 10 aces. However, the Spaniard put most of his second serves at risk as he double-faulted 6 times, two more than the Japanese throughout the whole match.
In the third qualifying round, which is currently ongoing, M. Landaluce will face Dalibor Svrcina, who previously knocked out Khumoyun Sultanov 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a chaotic encounter. This could be an intriguing test of their service game consistency, as well as their range while point construction also factors in this match as they maintain their balance. Should be another one for the list now!

Martin Landaluce (Madrid, 16 years old) bursts into an outside terrace of the Arthur Ashe and impresses with his physique. There is no trap or cardboard, he says that it comes as standard. His crown is 1.91 tall and from his appearance it could be said that he is an associate of Casper Ruud or one of the vikings Nordics who perform discreetly on the circuit, but it is not like that. J.K. Trotter then started the next game by surviving a double fault that foiled his game point before securing a massive hold to 1-0. This was also the case for M. Landaluce in the second game, where the Spaniard held his serves to 1-1 right after. Somehow, a deuce happened after M. Landaluce's backhand pass in the third game, where even if the Japanese faced a break point somewhere, the latter still held to 2-1 by the end of that game.
After setting up a one-point lead through a different shot winner, M. Landaluce's defense-to-offense mechanism ended with a timely forehand winner to secure his break point, but J.K. Trotter scored another massive hold to 3-2. Subsequently, the Spaniard held to 3-2, and a fourth-shot winner set up his break point before breaking to 4-3 thanks to his deep return to J.K. Trotter's volley error. This was followed by a service game hold to 5-3, with a game point being made thanks to a volley get.
Two games later, M. Landaluce was supposed to serve for the match. However, some forehand error slips caused the Spaniard to be broken back to 5-5, including a third-shot forehand error to confirm the said break, but he broke back thanks to his forehand down-the-line pass (6-5). Ultimately, M. Landaluce earned the chance to serve for the match, which he succeeded (7-5) to secure his spot in the third qualifying round, gifting himself a birthday present at the end of that day.

The packed second qualifying round action then continued with Martin Landaluce, who previously knocked out 15th seed Raphael Collignon 6-3, 6-3 in the previous round, faced another rising player in James Kent Trotter, who defeated Daniel Evans 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 after a rollercoaster battle. While this match delivered some goods in one way or another, it also came down to how they execute their shots as they often found not hesitant to move forward at best with their aggression.
Three games in, M. Landaluce came up with a working volley to level the play four points in before forcing a deuce, somehow breaking early due to J.K. Trotter's double-fault (2-1) before consolidating his position to 3-1, even though there was a foiled game point that forced another deuce at that game. This was also the case in the other game, where the Spaniard held his serves to 4-2, continued with J.K. Trotter's ace to hold to 4-3.
Interestingly, M. Landaluce almost caught the line, but the ball was slightly too wide for the Japanese's break point, but the former's preceding forehand saved it before he massively held to 5-3. He then earned the opportunity to serve for the first set, which he succeeded (6-4) to stand out by the end of this set, putting him a set away, technically, from the third qualifying round.

Rovereto Ch SF: Luca Nardi [2] def. Martin Landaluce [6] 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 Match Stats

📸 ATP official website
Fair to say that L. Nardi's second serves turned out to be a dip, but the Italian second seed nailed his pressure points again in the third set, which culminated in his defenses that complemented his final shot strikes at times. As a result, he asked the necessary questions to M. Landaluce's balance, except at the second set. As a result, even if M. Landaluce converted 50% of his 8 break points, L. Nardi optimized his chances as he converted 5 out of his 7 break points.
On the other hand, it appeared that both players had distinct service game strengths in this match. L. Nardi had the slight edge on his first serves thanks to his 7 aces (3 more than M. Landaluce's 4), winning 10% more first serve points with 71% as he drove most of the flow. In contrast, even though both players double-faulted five times, the Spanish sixth seed won 8% more of his second serve points at 53%.
L. Nardi also eventually won the tournament in an all-Italian final clash against Francesco Maestrelli 6-1, 6-3 thanks to his dominant play despite the tightness trying to serve for the match (match report incoming). With this, L. Nardi stayed inside the Top 100, which secured his possible direct entry to the 2025 Australian Open, thus not needing to play the qualification rounds.

Somehow, the start of the third set became intriguing as L. Nardi already created his initial break point through a working forehand pass to M. Landaluce's volley error even if the latter saved them for his massive hold to 1-0. It took two games later before L. Nardi's shot winner midway paved the way for his eventual break of serve (2-1) with M. Landaluce's backhand error creating his break point only to be broken back (2-2) as the Spanish sixth seed's backhand pass created one of his latest break points.
Somehow, the moment did not last long because L. Nardi's preceding backhand to M. Landaluce's forehand error created his break point before the Italian second seed broke back again to 3-2, consolidating his lead with a service game hold to 4-2. While a forehand winner from L. Nardi generated an equalizer in the next game, M. Landaluce still held his serves to 4-3. It was not until the ninth game, where M. Landaluce had an unideal start before L. Nardi's defenses struck the Spanish sixth seed, which got the latter run over to create his match point before a +1 backhand error converted it, causing L. Nardi to break for the match as be took the third set 6-3.

The second set almost became a one-way traffic, but it took until the fourth game where M. Landaluce became more aggressive, which peaked with a forehand return winner (from quite an angle) to create his break point before he finally broke to 3-1. Subsequently, the Spanish sixth seed held his serves to 4-1 to strengthen his position in this set.
Somehow, L. Nardi still managed to keep in touch with a service game hold to 4-2. Two games later, when he was supposed to serve to stay in the set, he started the said game with a double fault before his forehand errors became prevalent, which culminated in a +1 backhand error in response to M. Landaluce's deep forehand return for the Spaniard to take the second set 6-2, thus forcing the deciding set to determine the outcome.
