Sameer Gupta - Cross River - a long track in honor of his late brother, with all proceeds going to cancer research
My brother and I went to High School in Cross River New York. Freshly back to the USA in 1990 from 3 years living in Japan, we were feeling out of place, rebellious and we were playing music together a lot (from our basement at home to the High School Jazz Band). When I think of the best times with my brother, I think of those days. He was awesome. He loved rock music, riffing blues, improvising and diving headfirst into the mosh pit...any younger brother would be worshipful...we were driven by our heroes on guitar and drums towards reckless abandonment only protected by our youth. He cussed out his racist boss and in 1991 he fought to have that school mascot changed away from the ‘Indians’. I was immensely proud to be his little bro. This album goes out to him and is one way in which I can always remember the power of his soul. All $ made from sales of this album will go towards cancer medical research and development, in an on going effort to not lose anyone else to this terrible disease. Rest in Power Deepak Gupta (8/6/1973 - 3/22/2021)
Sameer Gupta - Tabla Rashaan Carter - Bass Marika Hughes - Cello Sara Schoenbeck - Bassoon Kaoru Watanabe - Percussion, Flute Rogerio Bocatto - Percussion Mitch Marcus - Woodwinds Martha Redbone - Vocals Charlie Burnham - Violin Ben Tyree - Guitar Album Cover Artwork - Kundan Baidwan

February “culture diet”
Folks have been asking me about the curricula I usually pull together for myself at the beginning of the year and share parts of here. I’ve not done one for 2021 but I did follow the Guardian UK’s 31-Day Literary Diet for January. Using that for inspiration, I’m making my own “culture diet” for February. Since it’s Black History Month in the US, the theme is Black Excellence and Culture. Here are the first 14 days (what I have so far).
February 1
RONKE ADEKOLUEJO - Spell No.7 by Ntozake Shange
February 2
Martha Redbone NPR Tiny Desk Concert
February 3
Morgan Parker - Three Poems
February 4
The Quilting Tradition - Black Art In America
February 5
Tap legend, Dianne Walker - Black Orpheus
February 6
Chimamanda Zgozi Adichie on Feminism
February 7
Hilde Capparella - How have Santeria, Vodou or Rastafari become global religions?
February 8
Dawoud Bey - Harlem on My Mind
February 9
Jerico Brown - Riddle
February 10
The Second Middle Passage - PBS
February 11
Ben Okri on Perception and Illusion
February 12
Carla Briggs on the Legacy of Black Bakers
February 13
Martin Puryear - Art in the 21st Century
February 14
TBD
February 15
Beyonce - Homecoming (available on Netflix)
