Hi! If you don't mind, could you expand on the Cornwall is (not?) England post? I'm a little confused but extremely intrigued

Sure!

Cornwall is a Brythonic Celtic nation. Culturally and historically it has more in common with Wales and Brittany (and, more distantly, other Celtic nations) than it does with England. At one point in history the Welsh and the Cornish were very connected, but England now physically separates them (Side note: this is why people refer to King Arthur as Welsh, despite him being born in Tintagel in Cornwall. "Welsh" here is being used to refer more broadly to Brythonic people) Cornwall has its own language, mythology, music etc

While Wales gets some legal recognition as a nation (though not enough imo), Cornwall and Brittany do not and are considered a part of England and France respectively. Some Cornish people want independence, others just want more recognition than they currently have, and a lot of us are focused on the No Second Homes movement

Because of all of this, Cornish people don't consider Cornwall to be a part of England. As of the last census, 14% of people in Cornwall define their national identity as Cornish and nothing else (bearing in mind that due to the extreme rate of second homes, a lot of people in Cornwall at the time of the census may not have been Cornish)

Like I said, even Cornish people who don't feel strongly about independence will state as a fact that Cornwall is not English. It's just understood as a given, for the same reasons that Wales is not considered English

Is the monster hunter in the swamp dead in your playthrough? I have had decision paralysis for a while trying to decide if my durge would want to get out of the conversation quickly or kill him to protect >.< I'm curious what Marrow thought the moment Gandrel said he was hunting Astarion.

While working on Marrow's story, we actually thought a lot about the monster hunter scene. Marrow killed him in our playthrough, and we asked ourselves over and over again maybe she would have let him live, but near the end game it became clear that it was more our personal wish to see this character alive and his impact. We’re game nerds and love to see all, literally all, content, but in this case it conflicted with Marow’s canon

So yeah, Gandrel is dead and likely to remain so. Marrow really didn't care. Not about him, not about his hunt. It was the 1st act - the time when she was most focused only on herself. All she was really interested in was revenge and anything stopping her, such as tadpole, goblins, or a random monster hunter. She preferred to just liquidate any obstacle and did not see any problem in this, only if her companions did not argue with her. She didn't even see Gandrel as a person or anything like that, just an object, just a problem, just a potential threat to her path. The murder just seemed... a natural solution. The right one. And she started to think that there was really something wrong with her methods and mind only after Alfira's death, when she realized wow, she really seemed to be out of control

As for Astarion, she didn't even think about protecting him. Sure, she already knew he was a vampire, but they weren't close yet and, as we said, she had pretty "psychopathic" behavior to feel the need to protect someone. Protecting him is just a combination of circumstances. If Astarion wants to kill some hunter, so let him, as long as nothing delays them. That's his business. However, Astarion began to see her as a good tool to use. As he thought

I love Suvi's moment of malicious compliance. I love how much it speaks to who she is.

Now when some part of her knows what has happened, that Eursulon has freed Naram and chaos is coming, when the soldier in her must know that it is her duty to the empire to stop what is coming. She chooses not to, because she was told to put it on ice. I wonder had the conversation with Steel not happened if she would have made the same choice.

Suvi who admittedly hates the spirits. Who saw the utility in the actions of Marow, who said to Eursulon that if the spirits come into this world they get what they fucking get. If Suvi was not told by her mother, by the Sword of the Citadel that what Marow was doing was wrong, that he will be punished, that there is no point hating something that is beyond you, if she would have made the same choice.

January 3rd the year 671 saw the birth in Ireland of Saint Maelrubha, a monk who founded a monastery at what is now Applecross.

The ancient Cornish language has been declared dehwelans dhyworth an marow – back from the dead – amid a rise in popularity thanks to Covid-19 and a critically acclaimed psych-pop star.

There has been a significant rise in the number of people learning Cornish since the pandemic lockdown forced classes online, according to the volunteer network An Rosweyth.

“We have people in America, we have people in Australia, Mexico, Spain, Turkey,” said Emma Jenkin, its support officer, who said her last online lesson had “a couple of people in Cornwall – but mostly people are dotted all over the place”.

Jenkin added there had been a “huge influx” of people wanting to learn Cornish during the pandemic and the interest has kept growing – not just from those overseas who mostly have Cornish heritage, she said.

Younger people are taking up lessons as a result of its recent revival in popular culture. The singer-songwriter Gwenno’s second album, Le Kov, was written and performed entirely in Cornish, and its follow-up, Tresor, was nominated for the Mercury prize. The comedian Edward Rowe, better known as Kernow King, has also helped popularise the language.

The sudden popularity is quite the turnaround for a language that was described as “extinct” by Unesco’s world atlas of languages little over a decade ago. The UN’s heritage agency now classifies Cornish – Kernewek – as “endangered”, having been reclassified as “critically endangered” in 2010.

Only 563 people described said that Cornish was their main language in the most recent census, covering England and Wales. However, experts say this is likely to be a significant underestimate because it relates to the number of people who speak it as a first language when, in reality, most Cornish speakers use English in everyday life.

Cornwall council estimates that between 2,000 and 5,000 people can speak basic Cornish, and that number is on the rise.

A report by Language magazine last year claimed more than 4,000 people were learning Cornish across the county. According to evidence given to a parliamentary committee, more than 2,000 people were learning the language using the app Memrise while a further 200 were taking formal adult education classes.

Whereas once these classes were the preserve of retirees and amateur enthusiasts, said Jenkin, they are now becoming popular with a younger generation.

More than two dozen primary schools, representing more than 9,000 pupils, have started learning the language as part of the Go Cornish scheme.

That has created its own problem: there are not enough Cornish teachers to meet the demand. Jenkin said: “There’s only one school support officer for the whole of Cornwall – and she only works part-time – so they [Go Cornish] have a waiting list because they can’t do any more than what they are doing”.

Denzil Monk, the chief executive of the independent production company Bosena, said artists such as Gwenno and films such as Bait and Enys Men by the Bafta-winning director Mark Jenkin were part of a renaissance in Cornwall’s cultural scene.

“When I was growing up [Cornish] was seen as a historical thing and there was just a small number of people learning it,” Monk said. “But it’s become something that’s easy to get into and accepted as something that’s fun and an important part of our cultural life”.

The revival has not come about as a result of increased funding from central government, though the Cornish people were formally recognised as a national minority in law in 2014.

But recognition alone is “not enough to support a minority language from going into decline”, Cornwall council said in a submission to MPs last year, describing the language as “a British cultural asset which is at risk”.

Monk, who is leading an effort to foster more Cornish-language films, said he had never considered the language extinct – “maybe deeply asleep” – but that its recent revival in popular culture reflected what was happening on the ground.

More people are using bits of basic Cornish – such as dydh da for hello, or meur ras for thank you – in everyday life, he said. The language with roots stretching back thousands of years is now seen as “interesting, culturally relevant and contemporary, rather than something of the past”.
