Byte Sized Biographies Podcast: The Famous, The infamous, The Quirky
Tumblr media
History podcasts have been part of the DNA of podcasting from its earliest days. There are some terrific independent history podcasts such as Why Wars Happened and 'Tis But A Scratch: Fact and Fiction About the Middle Ages.
There are similarities between a history podcast and biography podcast, yet the subtle differences are distinctive. History podcasts deal with events from a broad scale, while a biography focuses on a person in history.
One of the best biography podcasts, which is an independent podcast, is called Byte Sized Biographies.
Byte Sized Biographies has a complete title, which is "Some Very Famous People You've Never Really Heard of, the Famous, the Infamous and the Quirky in Less Than An Hour." The creator / host of the podcast, Philip Gibbons, explains: "I take that five-hundred-page book that you will acquire with the best of intentions but never read and reduce it to a compelling, less than sixty-minute podcast. My subjects include Alexander Hamilton, Edgar Allan Poe, Amelia Earhart, Billy Holiday, Ernesto Che Guevara, Bob Marley as well as lesser-known folks like Kempton Bunton, who stole Goya's Duke of Wellington from London's National Gallery, Ludwig II, builder of Neuschwanstein, and Elvis Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker."
Mr. Gibbons must be doing something right, since the podcast has passed 150 episodes.
The website is someveryfamouspropledotcom for more information about the podcast and the subjects of its episodes.
Creator/Host Philip Gibbons enjoyed a successful career as a business development executive, before becoming a documentarian and free-lance journalist, Gibbons. He also worked for ten years as a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School System and graduated from Brown University with a degree in European History.
Here are some examples of Gibbons' journalism, ranging from internet content to traditional published journalism:
Ranker.com content
Strange Things You Didn’t Know About the Wizard of Oz Persistent Nazi Mysteries Facts About the Tragic Life of Edgar Allan Poe
In 2013, Mr Gibbons released the documentary, “The Devil and the Death Penalty” which chronicles the dysfunction within the California capital punishment system by revisiting the case of Lawrence Bittaker, a convicted serial child killer and rapist who has been on death row at San Quentin since 1981.  More information about this film can be found here: The Devil and the Death Penalty
The Devil and the Death Penalty received a Silver Ace Award from the 2012 Las Vegas Film Festival and was the winner of the 2013 San Francisco United Film Festival’s Best Documentary Feature award.
Gibbons was also a contestant on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire on August 13th & 15th, 2000. He walked away with $500,000.
The podcast's format is straightforward, with appropriately weighty intro music and then Gibbons introducing his subject of the episode. Often, a biographical subject may span several episodes, like Teddy Roosevelt in December 2024. At the end of each episode, Gibbons reviews his sources and offers recommendations for listeners who wish to learn more.
Tumblr media
Gibbons is a superb narrator, with a deep, resonant tone and the ability to keep listeners engrossed in his biographical tale. Sound quality is excellent, and it's obvious that Gibbons does extensive research on his biographical subjects.
I like Gibbons's respect for listeners' time by keeping each episode under an hour. In that hour, Gibbons extracts the most information possible in that under 60-minute time frame.
My favorite episodes are the ones on Johnny Carson, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Edgar Allan Poe, and Ian Fleming.
Check out Byte Sized Biographies. It's an independent podcast that is scrupulously researched, narrated flawlessly, and timed perfectly.

Been reading some Lancer 3rd party material that I kickstarted, and I must say that MS & O (Marley, Oz & Silver Lending & Consultation) are by far the funniest mech manufacterer in the setting.
-They're poor as fuck and all their mechs and gear are full of hodgepodge solutions held together with metaphorical duct tape. Their R&D Department is described as "three guys and a truck" something they desperately try to hide as they pursue a contract with IPS-N, one of the corporate giants of the setting.
-They have a mech, the Frankenstein that is widely as the ugliest mech in existence that is not a memetic hazard. As in, anything uglier than it will actively cause brain damage in people.
-They have a mech named the Donner. Obviously, it is a cannibal.
-The Rasputin is absolutely humongous, very round, is based on russian matrioschka dolls and is the only mech to date that has absolutely no arms or other manipulators, leaving it the only mech that actually incapable of engaging in melee combat in way other than trying to bump people with its sheer mass.
As in, its the only mech that cannot equip melee weapons. Ever.
-Their flahship heavy weapon, which is also the only heavy weapon they manufacture is just a enormous laser pointer.
No, really. Its a targeting laser so incredibly large that when you use it to tag a target is actually lights it on fire.
It was created as a drunken contest between a bunch of programmers and a engineer,
-They didn't have the money to make a proper hacking mech, so their's instead load its hacks into a gun and fires them at enemy mechs. It works.
-One of their mechs is a robot cowboy. Complete with a lasso.
-Another mech lowers its reactor heat by simply generating so much of it that it cracks its own armour plating, thus generating new "vents". Not a very safe practice.
Not suprisingly, the very same mech is known to self-immolate with some frequency, leading to a accurate stereotype of its pilots as being suicidal.
I love them. Also one of very few mech manufacturers that actually are quite morally upstanding and can be considered Good.

I will admit to having a soft spot for Marley, Oz & Silver as a manufacturer that really tries to be good and moral .. but their research department is two dudes and a truck and their budget is whatever that can fin in their couch cushions so their mechs are STILL fucked up because they have to cut corners everywhere, which also makes the mechs funny as all hell.
Yes, it is a *great* idea to make a mech that deals with heat by heating its reactor so much that its covering starts cracking and forming improvised "vents". Clearly there are no downsides to this design at all.
Some people's Lancer homebrew content really does sound like "but what if you could buy weapons of mass destruction from an arms dealing megacorporation run by a young witch in the alps who just wants to fund the search for her neighbor's cat"

Those used to thinking of mech providers as vast corpro-states are often surprised to learn that the full-time staff of Marley, Oz, and Silver doesn’t breach triple digits, of which perhaps 6 people lead by Oz are the design team at any given time.  The people of Marley, Oz, and Silver work long hours for relatively little pay, doing difficult work for strangers that do not trust them, with the vast imperial might of corpro-states, the Baronies, and other unpleasant people as their foes.
This is, in the main, because the people of Marley, Oz, and Silver are starry-eyed idealists, the kind who’d break their arms reaching out for just one more soul to save.
[...]
Though their presence in the market is small, Marley, Oz, and Silver are proving increasingly popular with far-flung colonies, both because their designs are cheap, sturdy, and long-lasting, and because when you call them for help, they answer.  It’s not always enough, but it’s never nothing.

Updates Ride Again
Been awhile since I posted an update here on that Lancer 3pp project, eh? Luckily the team is still getting along grea-
Tumblr media
(MOI NIMUE, DFG LUST, & MO & S RASPUTIN. Art credit goes to the incomparable Moid)
Ikiryo, Psybomb, & I have continued to edit and tweak our manufacturers to ensure that once 3pp licensing is online they’re as good as they can possibly be. Alongside this we’ve been ordering art ahead of time, working on flavor sections to help incorporate our manufacturers into the world of your game, and the incomparable Ikiryo’s been busily creating new NPCs with which to challenge your players! Major updates in terms of balance and flavor will be upcoming for all three manufacturers Soon(tm) in response to feedback from Lancer’s discord, so keep an eye out.
If you want updates faster than whenever I have enough will to live to post them, check out Iki’s Twitter. Otherwise, it’s been awhile since we did one of these updates so let’s hit ya with the Land of Full & Complete Context:
What Is Lancer?
Lancer is a ‘mud-and-lasers’ RPG following mechanized cavalry pilots in the far future. Old Humanity, the cultures we know today, suffered a terrible Fall, and the children of New Humanity have spread through the stars to ensure that they can never destroy themselves again, and in the hopes of building a more just world. Along the way we’ve had some mighty triumphs, some horrific mistakes (nothing like re-inventing capitalism am I right), and have grown to contend with the birth of artificial intelligence - which is more alien than we could have ever dreamed of. Your pilots might work for Union; as Liberators executing slavers and tyrants to build a better world from their bones, as members of the Navy defending the weak, as UIB agents up against alien horrors from worlds we know not. Perhaps you swear your service to vast corpro-states, looking for the beautiful and true things at the heart of their cancerous search for profit and empire, or maybe you’re a mercenary from the Long Rim, just trying to die another day. Whoever you are, you have been granted a unique relationship to violence in the form of a mech, and must now decide what that means in your life.
Lancer is produced and published by Massif Press ( @orbitaldropkick) and its player-facing rules are available for free on their store. Our project is third-party; not in any way affiliated with Massif Press, but made to be compatible with their excellent system and slot into its setting.
Our project introduces three mech manufacturers with their own goals and needs. They are...
Downfall Group (by Psybomb)
Tumblr media
(DFG GLUTTONY. Art credit goes to Domochevsky)
“What happens when you make a promise to someone who doesn’t want you to keep it?” Like the other two corporations here, DOWNFALL Group did not start out looking for a fight. They just found one. In this case, their mission led them to figure out that what they were meant to do was at odds with what they should, and the final decision was probably not what their bosses intended. Still, when your avowed enemies control nearly everything, including you if they found out, you have to get creative with your solutions.
An intelligence agency that’s gone rogue from the corpro-state that founded it, DFG’s pattern-groups utilize stolen technology in their fight to sabotage the rise of interstellar capitalism. They could be a rebellion’s best friend, the backers of suspiciously armed pirates and, now and again, even an army unto themselves.
Magnum Opus Interstellar (by Ikiryo)
Tumblr media
(MOI SOLOMON. Art credit goes to Moid.)
Magnum Opus Interstellar are voyagers among the stars, seeking to map the routes across the depths of space. Magnum Opus tends to dislike personal conflict, as it interferes with business and exploration; but the Aun attack on the Cornucopia blink gate has left them shaken and reeling. Shocked out of neutrality, they are now gearing up for war with frames that tear the firmament asunder and demonstrate that a lack of interest in war was a dramatic difference to a lack of capability.
An ancient and respectable, if small, corpro-state, Magnum Opus Interstellar used to manufacture mechs as a luxury good on the side for the sorts of people who make war into a game. Now awakened to a terrible wrath they have not yet known, their corporate techno-sorcerers ride to war with the codes of summoning at their fingertips. Their work has been undone; worlds will burn for this. And, of course, rich boys making a game out of war still buy what they’re selling.
Marley, Oz, and Silver Lending And Consultations (by Vox/Yours Truly)
Tumblr media
(MO & S FRANKENSTEIN. Art credit goes to Domochevsky, as does credit for the INSPIRED addition of the vending machine).
Smith-Shimano Corpro offers unparalleled quality, custom-tailored to each unique customer, with service plans that can’t be beat. Marley, Oz, and Silver are the other end of the market; whatever they make, they make it at the absolute lowest price point possible and at the highest quality they can provide you for that price. Having trouble getting your revolution off the ground? Dreams of glory as a mechanized gladiator doomed by your pocketbooks? Sick and tired of fancier frames jamming up or shutting down? Come see Marley, Oz, and Silver - it’s for a good cause.
MO & S are very small. They have no money. You can imagine the kind of stress they are under. It’s not that they like being arms dealers; it’s that being arms dealers funds them helping the real people that are in front of them here and now. Thankfully, between the Ungrateful conflicts, partisans in the Dawnline Shore, and other hotspots flaring up in the Galaxy, they’ve found some markets that don’t hurt their conscience. Need a war machine but all you have is a junkyard full of retired school buses? Call Marley, Oz, and Silver.
Questions, comments, and feedback are more than welcome! Keep an eye on this post for the announcement of those major changes I alluded to, and because I have terminal writing disease & will probably slap some fiction on it in a reblog.
Catch ya on the front lines, friends.

Hey y’all! Remember that third-party Lancer project I’m involved in? Well, meet the MO & S RASPUTIN! This video has been thoughtfully provided by the esteemed Dragonkid, who really knocked it out of the park.
Not familiar with Lancer? It’s a mech RPG set in the gay space future, provided by Massif Press ( @orbitaldropkick). You can check it out at their store here.

Easily my favourite supplement, if only because the Marley, Oz & Silver mechs are; a company whose R&D division two guys and a truck, and who has a budget of three shoestrings and two pennies, trying to compete with the big boys
Lancer RPG hot take maybe idk but if you use a power armor size 1/2 mech you should Henshin into it like Kamen Rider. And I’m tired of pretending you can’t.
