BOOK REVIEW: GORDON MILNE, Shankly, My Dad And Me with Steve Younger (2023)

Two great Foreword’s by two great footballers:

Mark Lawrenson “I’m writing about one of the nicest people in the game, and the finest octogenarian I know.” 

Gary Lineker “I’m too young to remember Gordon as a player but from training alongside him you could see he was technically gifted: a neat and tidy midfield player, one who went on to enjoy a distinguished career”.

Indeed Gordon Milne did at Preston North End, Liverpool, Blackpool and Wigan Athletic as a midfielder, later managing, primarily in the Midlands at Coventry City (1974-1981) and Leicester City (1982-1986) as well as winning silverware in Turkey.

A fascinating read, especially the background to Milne's rejection letting from Ted Croker. Just think, Gordon Milne, England manager instead of Don Review! Also, the demise of Liverpool under Bill Shankly is enlightening, showing the other cheek of the Anfield Reds, particularly as Gordon was one of Bill's first signings.

From a youth kicking a old football against a garage door in Preston to an adult writing this hardback has definitely achieved Steve Younger's main aim, to avoid producing a book that is “little more than lists and statistics.”

I said after the first season that it had a lot of potential, if they tweaked some stuff in the format. The trouble was that I still thought that after the fourth season, and I guess someone decided that five seasons are too many chances to give them to tweak it enough.

Ah well. We’ll always have the amazing Harriet Kemsley episodes, and that time that Matt Forde forgot Mark Lawrenson was Irish.

He never got his kit dirty, it was like ‘what’s your problem?’ when you’d come off covered in blood and snot and everything and he’d just walk off and basically give his kit to the kit-man and tell him he won’t need to wash it this week. Everyone keeps going on about Van Dijk and Hansen is the closest person that I can think of that’s comparable.” Van Dijk’s performance was all the more remarkable when you consider the fact that the 30-year-old had spent over nine months on the sidelines with a serious knee injury. The Chelsea game was only his third competitive start for Liverpool since last October, but it didn’t look like he had ever been away. The away side did score the opener but that came from a lack of concentration from a corner, which van Dijk couldn’t do anything about. Of course, after the sending off of Reece James, the game was easier to manage but, even so, Van Dijk’s class stood out among everyone else on the pitch.
