Luxury Liner, 1948
There are great film musicals where the story, the song, and settings all go together beautifully and then there are slightly goofy musicals which have such great outfits, that you don’t mind the goofiness. Such as Luxury Liner which stars George Brent as the captain, Jane Powell as his opera singing daughter, and Frances Gifford as the passenger whom he falls for. The great thing about old-fashioned liners is everyone dressed for dinner, so there are endless evening gowns to admire.
Frances Gifford wears a draped Grecian white gown at top, but you can also see her in black lace, in cobalt suiting, etc. Jane Powell wears the crispy day wear of gingham and plaids as you see in the middle photo, plus evening gowns for the young woman in pretty pale pinks and yellows. Marina Koshetz plays a diva opera star and she has lots of fun practically stalking men and wearing dramatic clothing like this draped gown with matching wrap covered in enormous roses. So, if you like operatic singing, this one will work for you, and if you don’t mind a confused story, just look at all the clothes which are by Helen Rose.
