Well, nothing like channeling Christmas a little early . . .
Gets it all over and done with . . .
A frightfully post-post modern Christmas it is too . . .
So many twists and references . . .
I suppose I would have to watch it frequently for several decades and really do my homework to catch them all . . .
But . . .
That’s Hollywood . . .
Particularly during Christmas madness . . .
Enjoy . . .

SUBLIME CINEMA #475 - ALL ABOUT EVE
One of the greatest screenplays- it took many actresses to be rejected or turn it down until Bette Davis, who was struggling at the time, to jump at the role when it was offered. It turned into one of the best performances ever put to film. Still timeless, modern, compulsively watchable - I’ve seen this movie countless times.

There’s a twitter thread about perfectly cast characters which is a interesting discussion. Plus I’m kind of salty about the thumbnail which is Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and (this is my opinion, I don’t have anything against Margot Robbie as an actress but) with the prompt being described as “the role was just made for that actor and nobody else could embody it they way they did” ...yeah I’m not sure Margot’s Quinn can fall into that category. There are plenty of actresses that can do what she does in the movies she’s been in. To me, this also means that people cast to play these parts in remakes...have no business doing so, it seems weird to do a remake at all because the original is so iconic and as close to perfect as can be, no one could measure up. Another “rule” (idk what to call it) would be that...the idea of any other actor taking on the role would have resulted in the failure of the movie in general or the character would not have become so iconic without that particular actor being cast. I’m less inclined (despite the wording of the prompt, I don’t take it literally) to include characters that were specifically created with a certain actor or actress in mind (take Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story) because that almost seems like cheating. Anyways, here’s my additions to the list, because I can’t bring myself to join twitter.
Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard
Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan, excuse me, Jude in I’m Not There
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men
Jack Lemmon & Marilyn Monroe in Too Hot to Handle
The Big Three Avengers Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth as Tony, Steve and Thor respectively. Paul Rudd as Ant Man deserves a spot too. So does Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes. Tom Hiddleston as Loki (well, the main variant of course) Really, the ladies at Marvel Casting deserve all the awards for the work they do.
Myrna Loy & William Powell as the Charleses in the Thin Man Series
Robert Preston in The Music Man (sorry Hugh Jackman)
The Main Fellowship in LOTR (seriously Amazon, idk what you’re doing with LOTR even if it’s a prequel...please stop)
Alicia Silverstone as Cher in Clueless
Glenn Close as Cruella DeVil
Mark Hamill & Kevin Conroy as The Joker & Bruce Wayne/Batman
Orson Welles as Harry Lime in The Third Man (imagine a modern day limited series about Harry Lime played by Orson, I would DIE)
Alan Rickman & Maggie Smith in Harry Potter
Sigh...I’ve grown completely tired of his shenanigans (I’m not even referring to everything with Amber Heard regardless of what the truth may or may not be) but Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones
Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus
The Star Wars new cast: Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Joh Boyega & Oscar Isaac. Heck Domnhall Gleeson too.
Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs (I’d include Anthony Hopkins if I didn’t enjoy both his and Mads performances as Hannibal equally)
George Saunders in All About Eve
Betty Davis & Paul Henreid in Now Voyager
Dana Andrews & Gene Tierney in Laura
Oof this got long, I could do a whole other list for TV!

Credited with being the first – and certainly the most famous – animated sex symbol is Betty Boop. While her life, so to speak, on-screen was idyllic, the real world scrap over her rights – and income – were quite another matter. She was created in 1930 for eight Talkartoons and then a film series by Max Fleischer for a clearly adult market. In an era when women cartoon characters were almost asexual, Betty Boop had a contoured body, eyelashes and – for the era – highly suggested clothing. She wore short dresses, high heels and in Betty Boop’s Bamboo Isle she appeared naked with nothing but a grass skirt and lei placed around her neck so that it covered her breasts.  Cartoon men were always trying to catch a glimpse of her while she was changing clothing and in 1931 she was pictured in bed with Santa Claus.  No one seemed to mind that – officially, according to Max Fleischer – she was 16 years of age at the time. Her life off the silver screen was convoluted. Actually a caricature of singer Helen Kane, her voice was performed by a variety of actresses over the years.  Kane had more than 20 recorded songs to her credit at the time. She was a scat singer of the era. Scat singing was a method of mixing spoken words and singing.  A good example would be Cab Calloway’s Minnie the Moocher.  Kane was also an accomplished actress who appeared with William Powell and Fay Wray in Pointed Heels (1929) and Buddy Rogers in Heads Up! (1930). As could be expected, as soon as the Betty Boop franchise started making money,  Helen Kane wanted a piece of the pie.  She filed suit against Max Fleisher and what was then known as Paramount Publix Corporation. In of May of 1932 she sued for $250,000 claiming Fleisher and Paramount were “exploiting her image" and using her voice without permission – and without compensation. With regard to the image of Betty Boop, Paramount produced on-screen performance of Clara Bow with a similar hair style and clothing. With regard to the voice, the defense claimed that the trademarked “boo poop a doop” had actually been originated by “a young negro child” named Esther in 1925.  That child, Esther Jones, stage name “Baby Esther,” had been a popular singer in the late 1920s where she had performed regularly at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Jones was known for her baby-like singing style which Kane had heard in 1928 and appropriated.  Kane changed the words "boo-boo-boo" and "doo-doo-doo" to "boop-boop-a-doop" for her own recording of "I Wanna Be Loved By You. There is no record that Kane paid Jones for the appropriation. The judge ruled against Kane stating that the baby technique of singing did not originate with Kane so she was not entitled to any compensation.   Kane’s signature song, I Wanna Be Loved By You,” written for the 1928 Musical “Good Boy,” has been re-released over the years by a surprising array of singers including Marilyn Monroe in the Movie “Some Like It Hot,” Frank Sinatra, Barry Manilow and – surprisingly Jack Lemon.   But there remains one lingering mystery with regard to Betty Boop.  At the time of the trial it was believed that “Baby Esther” Jones had died. She received no money but there is doubt that she had died. It is believed that “Baby Esther” was the stage name for Gertrude Saunders. Born in 1903, Saunders was, at the very least, an actress in three movies well after the trial: Big Timers (1945), Sepia Cinderella (1947) and The Toy Wife (1938). Saunders died in April of 1991. Whether or not Gertrude Saunders and Esther Jones were the same person, “Baby Esther” is viewed as the “black grandmother” of Betty Boop: boo poop a doop!
