Being half of a whole. How some things take time. A grain of sand that becomes a pearl through irritation. A chunk of coal that becomes a diamond through pressure. A strand of silk that becomes lace through effort. All things take more time to create than to destroy. How even the tallest oaks need time to grow so proud. Tree rings and gold rings. How even gold still needs to be shined alight from time to time. Being part of the whole.
History
⇢ Trigger warnings: murder, discrimination mentions.
Marigold and her twin, Jasmine, were born out of love. If nothing else, that can’t be taken from them, and in her darkest hour, this is still a fact Marigold returns to. She was born first, her name both an insult and an honour. Being baseborn, she wasn’t named in Gaelic like the half-sisters who came before her, but she was named in part for her mother, Marian Harris. Marigold was a flower that married the gold of the King and the name of his secret human lover, the only symbol that would ever marry them. Marigold was too young to remember her mother, as she was murdered before she could know her. In her mind, Marian is something ephemeral and enchanting, a warm feeling half-conjured. Marigold and Jasmine were brought into the Seelie Court and raised there wholly, though they were notorious from the first. They were the King’s baseborns, proof of his hypocrisy, and the only demifey allowed in the Seelie Court. It was the only favour he ever did them, apart from birth. The King barely speaks to the twins, though Marigold aches to know her father from more than a distance. She wants to be legitimized, to be called Princess and have the rights and honours befitting anyone of royal blood. It was wrong that she be denied that on behalf of a human mother, a choice she didn’t make. Why should Marigold be punished for the sins of her father?
Marigold didn’t blame him; she had been born out of love. The same way she didn’t blame King Adare for having Sacrificed her half-sisters: she understood that heavy lied the crown. There was a responsibility, and rhyme and a rule; Marigold just wanted to be part of it. She hated the human part of her and often projected that throughout her life, acting disdainful and cruel toward humans, just as many full fey Seelie acted toward her. Marigold knew that even if she succeeded in finding a way to get legitimized, she might end up Sacrificed, as many Princesses were—but she’d rather die a Princess than live as a baseborn. Marigold’s decided to be the most perfect Seelie; to be charming and pleasure-seeking, to find the fun in life, to do anything to make her father proud. It wasn’t until her sister Jasmine divulged a secret ambition that Marigold began to hatch a plan as to how to win the King’s attention and affection. Jasmine found the Seelie Court too hypocritical; she said she was thinking the unthinkable—going through an Ordeal and changing Courts. Marigold forbade the idea outright and shut Jasmine down: she couldn’t imagine a life without her sister. But maybe if she could get close to some Unseelie, as uncomfortable as that would be, she could get some information valuable enough to the King to earn her place among the shining.
Occupation
Waitress.
Being a waitress at Oakenfold is such a menial job; she knows it was the least her father could do, literally. She traffics appetizers and shots shots shots and rum and cokes, all with a smile on her face. At least the other servers are full fey. Marigold wants this job to be worth her while, but every time she has to be nice to an Unseelie in the hopes of getting something out of them, a little part of her dies. She views it as a sacrifice for her future.
Connections
Jasmine: Jasmine is Marigold’s other half and they have a strong bond. The only thing that matters more to Marigold than getting legitimized is the love of her sister, but Marigold could never leave the Seelie. She doesn’t understand why Jasmine is so discontent, so restless; she has to convince Jasmine to stay.
Ember: Ember is a friend to Marigold, the only full fey who doesn’t care about who her mother was. Ember has her own complicated childhood and was also a hot topic in the Seelie rumour mill, so they support one another and find it easy to talk. When Marigold feels like getting raucously self-indulgent, she does it with Ember.
Sorrel: Sorrel is another waiter at Oakenfold and also the Seelie Knight; Marigold might have the trappings of a crush on him, or maybe it’s a desire to have a status and reputation like his. The line gets blurry for her. Either way, she will take as much time with Sorrel as she can get, finding her way into the Seelie limelight.
