MARIE-JEANNE LAMARTINIÉRE // SOLDIER
“She was a Haitian soldier, and reportedly a "dazzling beauty." She served in the Haitian army during the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), including the Battle of Crête-à-Pierrot in 1802. She fought in a male uniform standing along the fort's ramparts bearing both a rifle and a sword. She made a great impression with her fearlessness and courage, and was said to use the long rifle to snipe on the wounded French soldiers below with "a skill all the men applauded". It is said to have boosted the morale of her colleagues with her bravery. When not fighting, Marie-Jeanne nursed her injured comrades.”

#throwbackthursday to my role as Marianne Angelle of THE REVOLUTIONISTS by @lalatellsastory While Marianne is a composite character, she is a literary manifestation of all the incredible women who fought on the frontlines as soldiers shoulder-to-shoulder with men; who cared for & safeguarded the injured, elders & children; who intercepted messages as cunning & clever spies; Vodum Mambos who channeled nature & ancestral power to defend their people; the countless women who FREED Haiti from colonial rule. These ferocious warriors & healers made Haiti the historic landmark of Black Liberation that it is today. Sergeant Sanité Belairé. Cécile Fatiman. Marie-Jeanne Lamartiniere. I dedicated this role to them in Sept 2018 & to so many unknown more; to my ancestors, Bahamian & Pinoy; to my Mother. • #vivlarevolisyon 🇭🇹 #blacklivesmatter 🖤 • “Marianne (pronounced [maʁjan]) has been the national personification of the French Republic since the French Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity & reason, & a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty.” (Wikipedia) • Costume Design 💃🏽: @ayadesignsglobal (at New Orleans Museum of Art) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCuNn66FTIG/?igshid=wxkzua7i04j0
