Started watching the 2008 S&S series and...
"Marianne Dashwood falls in love with the charming but unsuitable John Willoughby, ignoring her sister Elinor's warnings. Will the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find happiness?"
And the show opens with Willoughby and Eliza Williams "in the act". It really feels like it's defeating the point right off the bat- it's not that Marianne was an idiot and everyone else around her was warning her to stay away from bad boy Willoughby, it's that nobody saw through him, nobody was sensible enough to check the propriety of how fast Marianne and Willoughby were so attached- while Elinor saw the impropriety of their behaviour to other people, she never warned Marianne away from him.
#jane austen is un-adaptable#i like ja adaptions but they end up these hollow romantic stories with HEA endings and like no?#most of what she's saying is in between the lines#girlie is funny#she is sharp and critical#marianne dashwood is not just some idiot girl falling for a bad boy despite many warnings#austen repeatedly tells us to beware overly charming men- they can fool you and your mother and your sisters#which is why the general lesson here would be to act sensibly in general which marianne did not#it wasnt that willoughby was evil but she wanted him anyway she was just quick to judge and quick to act in a not so smart manner
