MARIA STRYDOM
MARIA STYDOM
d. 21 May 2016
MOUNT EVEREST
Maria Stydom,34, was an Australian woman who was born in South Africa who worked as a lecturer in Melbourne.
Stydom climbed Mount Everest with her husband, Rob Gropel on 20 May. Stydom appeared exhausted and stopped when they were above 8,000 metres and said she couldn’t continue. Gropel not knowing his wife condition was life-threatening, asked if he should continue to go on to the summit and she said, ‘yes go on’ and told him that she would wait for him when he returns.
Stydom had altitude sickness, this is when the blood thickens, and with dehydration and effot, can trigger sickness which can be lethal with buildup of fluid on the lungs and brain. The first symptoms are mistaken for tiredness or a minor illness, and climbers don’t realise at the time there is anything seriously wrong with them.
The couple were only 15 minutes away from the Summit, Gropel made it to the Summit and returned to Stydrom who was still conscious. The couple then procedeeded to leave, Strydom began hallucinating, had problems walking, which could have been due to a stroke (cerebral odema). They were helped by a group of guides, and Gropel helped her by giving her oygen until it ran out, at one point they thought she was getting better. She started drinking and taking medication and they made a camp. Overnight she got worse and passed away. Gropel attempted to save her life but was unsuccessful. A Dutch climber who was with the group of climbers also died.
Stydom’s body couldn’t be brought down and had to be left behind, like many other Mt Everest victims. Her body however was later recovered and brought down by Sherpa climbers, a rescue helicopter recovered her so she could be laid to rest by her loved ones.

Okay. I'm just going to say this. Although I am no longer vegan, I feel the need to defend this woman for a couple of reasons:
The first and most important being that under no circumstances do I think it is okay to laugh at an innocent person's death. This lady had a husband and family who are absolutely heartbroken, as anyone would be, and they would probably be horrified to learn that people are making fun of such a tragedy that has most certainly ruined their lives forever. Furthermore, it trivializes and dehumanizes her simply based on the diet and lifestyle she chose to follow. You don't like veganism? Fine. You do you. But it is completely wrong to perpetuate this kind of negative idea that it's okay to take joy in another's suffering just because they had a different (and honestly pretty fucking harmless) outlook on life than you.
Reason number two: the message is misleading. It implies that she died BECAUSE of her vegan diet, rather than in spite of it. Prior to this attempt, she and her husband were both very successful mountain climbers (Denali in Alaska, Mount Ararat in Turkey and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania are among some of the mountains they successfully climbed--which is NOT an easy feat by any means). Yes, Maria Strydom (that is the "woman's" name) died on Mt. Everest. Well, so have some 200 odd meat eaters. Are you going to hold their diets accountable for their deaths? No. Of course not. Shit, even within the same climb, three other people died. Again, NOT vegans. So, maybe Mt. Everest is just really fucking hard to climb, regardless of who climbs it and what they eat or don't eat? (Btw, her vegan husband survived the climb, although he caught Altitude Sickness in the process--which is a PREVALENT OCCURRENCE for ANYONE who attempts to summit this fucking beast of a mountain).
Also, just to prove my point, there is a vegan climber named Kuntal Joisher who has successfully climbed Mt. Everest. So, it is a goal that is very much possible (extremely difficult, but possible) for someone on this diet.
Tbh I usually don't comment on memes like these, and I don't really blame anyone who reblogged it cause I understand it's just a quick glance and you're usually not thinking this deeply about something when it's in this format, but this one really got under my skin. I'm not looking to offend anyone or start drama. I just want to add some useful information and get people to think about this from a different perspective.
So to conclude, I'll leave you with this quote from the Washington Post article that covered the story:
"On Everest, death is not necessarily a sign of failure so much as one of a particularly sad inevitability. Much like many places humans have ventured in our boundless curiosity — from the ocean depths to outer space — it cannot sustain life, and it often takes it."

😂😂😂😂😂dont think me mean but the irony of it all lol. Eating healthy is cool but I do side eye dat vegan shit esp how the media and celebs been pushin it tuff these past 2yrs. Get you some more sunlight, exercise more, drink more water, and cut back on junk, smokin/drankin....bet you'll be good as any vegan. We just have to be more active and avoid mountains lol Reposted from @professor.scary - Dr Maria Strydom, 34, from Melbourne, Australia, died of apparent altitude sickness while descending the summit of Mount Everest on Saturday. Her husband, Robert Gropel, who was part of the climbing team, suffered a high altitude pulmonary oedema while descending the mountain but survived the journey. Both Dr Strydom and her husband were experienced climbers and had made the decision to climb the seven summits – the highest peaks of the seven continents – in a bid to prove that “vegans can do anything”.In an interview conducted by Monash University’s Business School where Dr Strydom was a finance lecturer, she said the couple had been inspired to climb the seven summits after following repeated questions about whether they had iron or protein deficiencies.“It seems that people have this warped idea of being malnourished and weak,” she said. “By climbing the seven summits we want to prove that vegans can do anything and more.”A Dutch man who was part of the same expedition died just hours before Dr Strydom of apparent altitude sickness. Eric Arnold, 35, had enough bottled oxygen with him, as well as climbing partners, but he complained of getting weak and died on Friday night near South Col before he was able to get to a lower altitude. In a local television interview earlier this year he had said conquering Everest was a childhood dream. ___________________________________ #horrorstories #horrorstory #horrorfacts #horrorfact #creepypasta #unknownfact #horrorstories #horrorstory #horrorfacts #horrorfact #creepypasta #unknown #horrifyingthing #things #scary #scarystories #creepystories #creepy #creepyfacts #creepyfact #scaryfacts #scaryfact #horrorstories #horrorstory #horrorfacts #horrorfact #creepypasta #unknownfact #horrorstories #horrorstory #spooks #trump #creepypa (at East 116th) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxxhcZJlRgW/?igshid=1st9bkek41tam
