Puppy Love
Modern AU!
Jack was five when Matthew and Diana adopted him. They were nice, his first thought. Matthew seemed scary at first but enjoyed reading to him at night, making silly voices for characters in the books. Diana gave the best hugs, as did her aunts who had become his grandmothers. He had never had one grandmother - now he had three!
Then there was his big brother, Marcus. Marcus and his dad did not get along very well, but Marcus loved Jack. So, when he asked Phoebe to marry him, he told Jack first.
"Phoebe, this is my family. That's my little brother Jack." Marcus introduced her.
"Did you draw that?" Phoebe asked, pointing to his sketchbook. Jack nodded mutely.
"You know what? I love sketching. But I'm not as good as you!" Phoebe praised. It was not condescending, but she was genuinely impressed. She sat next to him during dinner and listened to his excitement about going to the National Gallery.
Jack was in love. At least he thought so. He would need to check.
He approached his mum in her office, whilst she was writing a paper, "Mum? How did you know that you and Dad loved each other?"
"What a question!" Diana giggled, turning in her swivel chair to face him then furrowed her brows in thought. Jack copied the motion.
"Well, I liked being around him. I would miss him when he was not here, especially when I went back to America for a month." Diana listed, "Butterflies, I always got the butterflies around your dad."
"I think I may be in love," Jack announced.
"Oh? With who?" Diana smiled.
"Phoebe." Diana's mouth opened and close a few times before she smiled and ruffled his hair. Puppy love. The purest crush ever to exist.
"What about Phoebe?" Matthew asked, walking into the room. He picked Jack up playfully before resting.
"I am in love with her." Jack declared. Matthew looked at him amused.
"I believe Marcus may have something to say about that, my boy." He said gently.
"You know, I think Jack and Phoebe should spend some time together. She has more art knowledge than me and I think he'll like that," Diana said as casually as she could while speaking to Marcus over facetime in the kitchen.
Marcus smirked, "You mean the monster crush Jack has on her?"
"You noticed?"
"I did," Marcus laughed, "It is adorable and understandable. Phoebe has not. Though she barely noticed that I was in love with her at first."
...
Phoebe thought Jack was the cutest. She had always wanted a younger sibling and loved how much Marcus loved spending time with him.
They were walking around the park and Marcus left to get them all ice cream.
"Phoebe?" Jack asked when he saw Marcus go. Now was his time.
"Yes?" She turned to him with a smile, sitting next to him on the picnic blanket.
"Can we get married?" He asked hopefully. Phoebe's eyes widened at the little boy.
"Oh, Jack. We can't."
"But I love you! I get the butterflies around you." Jack said.
Phoebe cooed and turned to face him, crossing her legs "Oh, Jack. You are the sweetest boy. But I love Marcus and he loves me, which is why I am marrying him."
"Oh." Jack's head fell in disappointment.
"But I do really like you Jack, and I love your drawing and painting. I like our time together," Phoebe said, "And one day, you will find someone who makes you feel way better than you do now."
"Really?"
"Oh, for sure! Those butterflies you feel are just mild compared to the ones you feel when you truly love someone." She encouraged.
"What's that like?" Jack asked, curious.
"When you are with the person you truly love, all those butterflies stop. Because you are the calmest with the person you love. You are at peace." Phoebe explained patiently.
"Do you feel like that with Marcus?"
"Yes." And then she looked around before her voice dropped to a whisper "But between you and me, you are my favourite."
"Really?"
"Really! Are we still friends Jack?" Phoebe checked.
Jack nodded, almost having forgotten his moment of heartbreak and the two hugged.
"Now, I believe ice cream is in order. What do you say?" Phoebe asked, holding out her hand. Jack took it with a smile.

More bonding moments with Marcus and Diana
I have to admit I’m disappointed we didn’t get the “Hi mom we’re home” moment from the book in season one.
Missing scene
"Hi, mum, I'm home!" Marcus jokingly calls out, entering Fernando's living room. Diana chuckles as Marcus kisses her on the cheek and hands her a bag of potato chips that he'd snuck in for her, taking them gratefully.
"Phoebe is..." Diana said.
"Asleep. I know. Did you drug her? My family has a history of doing that to women I bring home." Marcus replied.
"No, but I have a lot of questions that I'm not sure I want the answer to," Diana replied, looking at him strangely. Marcus did relish in telling her random, sometimes horrific tidbits about his family and watching the historian look more confused than she possibly ever has.
"She is really hardworking." Diana complimented, "And enthusiastic. You are lucky."
"Matthew can do as he pleases. He has done thus far," Marcus says, sharper than his usual tone.
"I was angry too. When I found out my parents spellbound me. I was hurt." Diana empathised with Marcus, "But then, I knew there was a reason. In the same way Matthew didn't tell you about blood rage. They wanted to protect us."
Marcus nods in understanding, "I agree. I do. And it would be easy if it was just that. But your parents didn't destroy a city, a family just to cover it up. Not everyone in your family looked you in the eye and lied for years. That is the problem with immortality, we have... more time to hold grudges. He has lied to me for over two hundred years."
Diana gives him a small, understanding. There is a part of her that wants to further intervene, but from what Matthew and Marcus have said (the little they have said) of their relationship, New Orleans was merely a part of a long and turbulent relationship.
Diana decided to move on, lighten his mood. He has taken on a heavy burden.
"Tell me, I know how you and Phoebe are. Will there be a wedding?"
Marcus grins, "You certainly have the busybody part of being a de Clermont down. Did grandfather teach you that?"
Diana laughs, "That's a yes. The two of you are perfect."
"Yes, well. I need Matthew to give me his blessing and he doesn't believe I am serious," Marcus replied, "I think an elopement would be fun. It has been a while since I've untied the family in true horror at my impropriety" He smiled at the thought of his family getting into a tiff.
A trouble maker indeed.
"Ysabeau would kill you." Diana pointed out. The matriarch would jump at a chance to plan an extravagant wedding for her grandson. So would his aunts, as Matthew briefly described Marcus' closeness with Philippe's daughter Freyja.
"You wouldn't let her, would you mum?" Marcus asked, a hand on her chest and Diana rolled her eyes.
"Emotional blackmail. Whilst I am pregnant. You are a terrible son and doctor."

Affection
Just more of Marcus and Phoebe being cute together.
Marcus likes picking up Phoebe anywhere and anytime.
Marcus just speeds in and picks her up, speeding out of the room again. Diana finds it adorable but really needs him to stop kidnapping Phoebe. They do have a book to hunt.
.....
They always act as if they haven't seen each other in years.
Phoebe came in from Saint-Lucien with Ysabeau, the two picking up some groceries. When she came into the house, Marcus picked her up in a hug, and they kissed and whispered endearments to each other.
"Aw, that's sweet. When was the last time they were together?" Chris asked.
Miriam, on the other hand, rolled her eyes at the young couple, "This morning."
.....
Lazy afternoons, the few they get in all this craziness, are spent listening to music. Phoebe is usually resting on Marcus' chest, wearing one of his shirts whilst he sometimes tells her stories of concerts he went to.
"I have to say, your old man music is growing on me." She murmured when 'Duran Duran' came on and he laughed, leaning down to kiss her forehead.
.......
A young couple who can't keep their hands off each other.
Matthew finds one of Phoebe's bras in Marcus' office and goes to their suite to return it. Problem is they're in there and he doesn't want to see more of them than he should wish too.
"Where's Marcus? I wanted to see if he could help me with something." Jack asked their dad.
"He's preoccupied for a few hours." Is all Matthew says, trying to ignore the sound of moaning.
"Oh, something to with the Knights?"
"No, Phoebe." Jack furrowed his eyebrows but then sees his dad holding a bra and nods in understanding.
