Thoughts on the match?

I’ll be honest. I have very little to say tactically about this game. I was mostly laughing out loud to myself and making memes about the empty VAR room while the game was happening.

But I will say this. Once we equalized, after Valladolid had two goals ruled out and skied a penalty, I knew we would win this. It was just enough absolute shithousery that I knew this was just the type of game that Real Madrid wins. Amazing.

We were absolutely not ready when we came out for this game. In maybe the first five minutes or so we looked up for it, but then, we fell apart. We were exposed on the counter countless times and completely disorganized on our left side defensively. We let in three goals, and were lucky two were rightfully called back for offsides. I already said this but I believe it was due to our formation change. Kroos and Ceballos didn’t know who was helping to cover for Reguilon when he went forward. Asensio and Modric on the other side balanced both fluid positioning with one or the other tracking back. Such was not the case and Valladolid looked dangerous several times down that flank. Our 4-4-2 was interesting despite this wrinkle and perhaps if our players knew their roles, we would have done better. I suspect, however, that we rarely practiced this formation in order to understand it. Or, at least it didn’t look like we practiced.

But I suppose you could say we reacted well. We came back from 0-1 down to win 4-1. We regained control of the game and I never felt too worried in the second half. We found a way. And ultimately, I think maybe that is the best thing to take out of this game. We woke up and we found a way to see out the mess of this game. Like we need to wake up and figure out a way to see out this mess of a season. I’m done with people saying we have nothing to fight for this season. We have second to fight for. We can still qualify for the Spanish Super Cup. Atleti is in front of us and we have every chance of jumping them.

It was strange that after the goals, we didn’t really celebrate. I suppose it was maybe the situation on the feild, or maybe the situation off of it. This was a tough week. I know that. And we came out of it showing professionalism. It doesn’t feel like there is much to celebrate right now, but I still found this... strange to say the least.

I will also say this. We have gotten 4 red cards in 5 games. I know Casemiro’s was a poor decision by the referee. But this is not a good look. A reflection perhaps of the lack of discipline we see on the feild and off. Rumors abound with tension between players, between players and staff. And you can tune most of it out as rumors or as propoganda campaigns, but we need to find our heads again.

I thought Odriozola was amazing today. He had no right getting to that ball for the penalty but he worked hard and proved himself. Ceballos likewise showed a great amount of effort as did Asensio. This showing was encouraging from players who didn’t get to see a lot of the feild in recent weeks and I hope we continue to rely on them. Vallejo got minutes today and I would like to see more of him. To me, that is what the rest of this season is about.

Next week, we face Celta, who will be a tricky and tough opponent. And we face them at home. Returning to the Bernabéu after Hell Week to redeem ourselves in front of our fans. Another big game. Until then?
