A twin-lobed deerfly (Chrysops relictus). Like mosquitoes, egg development in the adult female requires a blood meal from cattle, horses or deer. The males are often seen on flowers while feeding on nectar.

Brandon Bussi, Goaltender (Providence Bruins): Signed by the Boston Bruins as a free agent out of Western Michigan University, has been one of the AHL’s top goaltenders throughout his rookie season, posting a record of 21-5-4 while ranking second in the league with a .925 save percentage and fourth with a 2.38 goals-against average. The native of Sound Beach, N.Y., did not lose in regulation on home ice until Apr. 1 and has made at least 30 saves in a game on 14 occasions, going 10-1-3 in those contests. Bussi represented Providence at the AHL All-Star Classic in February. Ryker Evans, Defenseman (Coachella Valley Firebirds): The second player ever selected in an NHL Draft by the Seattle Kraken (35th overall in 2021), Ryker Evans has totaled 44 points in 68 games for Coachella Valley this season, leading all AHL rookies with 38 assists and ranking second in plus/minus with a plus-21 rating. Evans has also helped anchor the Firebirds’ power play, collecting 18 assists on the man advantage. A 21-year-old native of Calgary, Alta., Evans participated in the 2023 AHL All-Star Classic. Jeremie Poirier, Defenseman (Calgary Wranglers): A third-round pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2020 NHL Draft, Jeremie Poirier has collected nine goals, and 32 assists for 41 points in 66 games for the league-leading Wranglers in 2022-23. The puck-moving defender is also a perfect 4-for-4 in shootout attempts this season, the best mark in the entire AHL. Poirier, 20, is a native of Valleyfield, Que., and turned pro after four junior seasons with Saint John (QMJHL). Ethen Frank, Forward (Hershey Bears): Ethen Frank is tied for the AHL lead among rookies with 27 goals and has totaled 46 points in 56 games for Hershey this season. Undrafted out of Western Michigan University, where he led the nation in goals in 2021-22, Frank signed with the Bears on Apr. 11, 2022, and earned an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals for 2023-24. The 25-year-old native of Papillion, Neb., was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for January, and he set a league record in the fastest skater event at the 2023 AHL All-Star Skills Competition with a lap of 12.915 seconds. Tye Kartye, Forward (Coachella Valley Firebirds): The AHL’s top-producing rookie with 55 points (27 goals, 28 assists) in 69 games, Tye Kartye, has been a catalyst for a Coachella Valley offense that ranks second in the league in scoring. The 21-year-old native of Kingston, Ont., is also second among all rookie forwards in plus/minus with a plus-17 rating, and his seven game-winning goals are tops for first-year players. Kartye was named the AHL Rookie of the Month for March after putting up 11 goals and 17 points in 15 contests. Georgii Merkulov, Forward (Providence Bruins): Providence’s team leader in scoring, Georgii Merkulov, has registered 53 points in 64 games for the Bruins, good for second among all AHL rookies. He has netted 11 of his 23 goals on the power play, and his stretch of six consecutive games with a goal in February matched the longest such streak in the league this season. A 22-year-old native of Ryazan, Russia, Merkulov signed with Boston on Apr. 9, 2022, after leading all NCAA freshmen in goals (20) at Ohio State University last season. L'Évangile du dimanche 17 octobre 2021
29e dimanche du T .O. - Is 53,10-11 /Ps 33(32),4-5.18-19.20.22 /Hb 4,14-16 /Mc 10,35-45
Source https://levangileauquotidien.org/FR/gospel/2021-10-17

It's the biologists turn
Having recently shared images from the Nikon Small World (see http://bit.ly/2xQdOHd) and the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2017 awards (see http://bit.ly/2ipNvkn), here are some photos from the Royal Society of Biology’s 2017 Photographer of the Year and Young Photographer of the Year competitions in a week of the year that seems to have all these events announcing their honours more or less simultaneously.
Our first photo shows a Blakiston’s fish owl, one of the rarest species with 20 breeding pairs remaining on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, here caught hunting fish corralled in the stream's eddy in midwinter. Our next shows the overall winner, an insect crawling up a mushroom in a Scottish forest. The third is of a 2mm springtail in Holland sitting atop a blade of grass, our fourth a tiny froglet about to emerge from its 5mm egg in India's Western Ghats while our last features two damselflies in China peering over the leaves. All in all the exhibition features some lovely images of the living world.

I have been doing a lot of timeline work for the ycmal wiki (pls halp me), I have basically reread the whole @youcouldmakealife blog and I thought you would like to know how the mains are doing in this lovely month of January 2018.
you could make a life
Dan Riley and Marc Lapointe are getting ready to celebrate their fourth year as a married couple. Marc will play in the Olympics next month.
in taking it apart
Mike Brouwer just broke up with Liam. He will retire in 6 months. I am sad.
if all is enough
Adam Rousseau is playing for Pittsburgh and will play in the Olympics in a month.
Ulf Larsson is in his first season with NYR, after the rookie incident. He will have a lot of chances to flirt with Adam, being division rivals. So we can bet Adam is just blushing a lot.
duelling banjos
We know nothing of Alexei Konstantinovich and Julien Perreault. Julien is maybe already dating the children coach we were told he met and Alexei is probably still married to a woman he doesn’t love and managing the team in Moscow (I am sad about this too).
giving in to the influence
Andy Bowman and Derek Carruthers have been together for 4 years. Nothing major happening in their lives right now, but I am confused about how Andy is still alive after 4 years of Derek’s plans.
Vinny gets a life
Anton Petrov and Thomas Vincent have been together for about 8 months. They love each other very much and I refuse to believe they are anything but happy. Also, Anton is getting ready for the Olympics.
impaired judgment (and other excuses)
Bryce Marcus and Jared Matheson may still be together?? It’s been over two years and a half since they met, but we have no information whatsoever about this.
between the teeth
David Chapman and Jake Lourdes are THE HAPPIEST PEOPLE ALIVE OK. The last part of btt is happening this month: they are together and in love, both going to the Olympics. Life is good to them.
follow the north star
Connie isn’t even 15 wtf He’s probably crushing hard on Gabe rn tbh. Roman is already playing and I’m not sure about Harry, but he has been drafted.
no expectation of returns
Stephen Petersen and Gabe Markson should be like married after 6 years together. No other info on what they are doing.
but always in tandem
As mentioned by Taylor on twitter, Georgie and Robbie are having a terrible day today. It’s their anniversary and it sucks. I am very sad
imparfait du subjonctif
again no clear canon info on how Sven, Yvette and Gerard are doing. Probably well and happy and together.
unsportsmanlike conduct
Hank McGregor and Jordan Davies haven’t started their relationship. The first part of their story hasn’t happened yet. Jordan will play at the Olympics in a month.
throw up your fists, throw out your wits
Luke is probably sad, let’s be honest, most likely still with the Flames. He may have slept with Andreas already, but they aren’t together yet.
Nikita is married and his daughter is several months old. I seriously hope he isn’t happy.

YCMAL Superlatives Write-ins (rd 1)
Been cracking up at some of the write-ins for the YCMAL superlatives, and pleasure’s best shared!
Best to be stuck with on a desert island:
Scratch but just because I love him
There's definitely characters who would be helpful for survival but I honestly just think Jess would be good company; we could panic uselessly together
Oleg—smart, not chaotic, knows people with boats
Liam (because I’d never be alone with my thoughts)
Don Matheson (can cook, has handyman skills, good level of snark...)
Mike (paradoxically, best survival skills)
Worst to be stuck with on a desert island:
Harry "very few practical life skills but very loud opinions" Chalmers
Seb (can you imagine the sheer amount of TALKING)
Joey, adore him but that boy has zero survival skills
Liam - when driving you crazy is his only form of entertainment
Kiro. I love him, but hell no.
LIAM!!! (Imagine Liam hungry, bored, sunburned and without Mike! You are welcome)
No longer allowed to be locker room DJ:
That list is too long.
Jake post break up with david
WE KNOW ABOUT THE NICKELBACK, LUKE
Playoff Willy
Marc (he'd probably play an NPR podcast or something)
Julius (Finnish death metal no thank you)
Most likely to get a speeding ticket:
Bryce (except if Jared’s in the car)
Bryce (if he isn't in the top 4 I'll eat my shoe)
These are young, rich athletes. It's a lot of them.
Sebastien Boucher (self explanatory?)
Marc and Charlie (they share this trait yes?)
Most likely to drive EXACTLY the speed limit:
David Chapman- actually, he would probably drive under the speed limit...
David, if he literally ever learned how to drive. Maybe Jake just by virtue of having David in his passenger seat judging him
David. Is that a question.
Jared Matheson (just bc David Chapman doesn’t drive)
Most likely to be the one in the middle of locker room nonsense:
Scratch and money are one person, right?
Scratchnmoney
Derek (like, canonically)
Sandro (he started the locker room nonsense)
Joey Joey Joey followed closely by Kiro (they should never meet)
ScratchMoney, I guess Joey if they don't count as one person
Least likely to get involved in locker room nonsense:
They all live in the locker room, and all of them have canonically gotten involved in nonsense, no winner
Oleg Kurmazov (best boy)
Mike (pre-Liam)
Mike Brouwer (dare you to even try to get him involved)
Most likely to venmo you $1.67 If they owe you $1.67:
Robbie (but only to Georgie)
Stephen, passive aggressively
Robbie, out of pettiness
Harry (my petty boy)
David because he thinks that's polite, Jared because he knows it's rude
Most likely to forget they owe you ANYTHING:
Benson (fuck him)
Jake. But he'll take you out for dinner/drinks the next time he sees you.
fucking benson
Bryce Marcus-Matheson (never expects to be paid back and therefore forgets to pay others back all the time)
My girl Charlie growing up in that house (mansion)

13 marvellous Pictures from the Royal Society of the amateur photography Contest of Biology
The shortlists for the Royal Society of Biology’s (RSB) amateur photography contest are announced.
More than 600 admissions to the contest have been narrowed down to 11 searching for its best prize, and 2 for its Young Photographer of the Year award.
This season’s theme is “The Hidden World”, with photographers capturing those moments not generally visible to the human eye — by the microscopic detail of creating frogspawn, to a Indian Lake seen from 30,000 feet in the air.
Photographer of The Year
1. Two Significant eyes from Miao Yong
(Miao Yong)
The exquisitely piece, shot in China of Yong, celebrities two damselflies.
2. A world only under our skin from James Patterson
(James Patterson)
It’s not a world. Taken at a lab in London, ” the shot of Patterson is really a light micrograph showing a hair follicle.
3. Ghost crab from Javier Herranz Casellas
(Javier Herranz Casellas)
Casellas’ picture shows Ghost Crab, or the Ocypode Pallidula. Their camouflage allows them to disappear immediately on a sandy shore by standing still, although the little crabs are able to move at rates of 20kph.
4. The Emerald Lake from Partha Saha
(Partha Saha)
Taken from 30,000ft in India’s Kashmir and Jammu region, the aerial view of Saha indicates an emerald green glacial lake at the Zanskar mountain range.
5. Out of this shadow from Peter Burkill
(Peter Burkill)
Blakiston’s Fish Owls are amazingly rare, with a few people. Burkill’s shooter, from Hokkaido, Japan finds the universe not only out of obscurity, of this bird but also their nocturnal existence.
6. Hooks and mimicked from Steve Lowry
(Steve Lowry)
Another light micrograph, the time of the skin of the sea cucumber. It’s though that the spikes can discourage predators from eating the sea animals.
7. Life at a drop from Anup Deodhar
(Anup Deodhar)
This very small egg is. The photograph indicates the froglet inside its transparent home fully developed and ready to satisfy the world.
8. Spawn Development from Amy Bateman
(Amy Bateman)
More frogs. Taken at Cumbria, at Croft Foot farm, Bateman’s macro photography shows the neuro method in frogspawn that is common.
9. Springtail from Marc Brouwer
(Marc Brouwer)
Springtails are merely a millimetre or two in dimension, but Brouwer was fortunate enough to track among those elusive creatures down in an area in Genemuiden.
10. Chara antheridia from Chris Carter
(Chris Carter)
This entry from Cornwall shows a microscopic view of algae, the Chara fragifera. The red spheres are encompassed by a closely-knit selection of defense cells.
11. Welcome to my humble abode from Duncan McNaught
(Duncan McNaught)
McNaught lives in South Scotland, and this shot shot in Galloway shows an insect infestation out from its home that is fungi.
Young Photographer of The Year
1. Coleman on Fire from Dheeraj Nanda
(Dheeraj Nanda)
Taken in Maluku, Indonesia, a female and male Coleman shrimp sat at a flame urchin — a organism with which they have a real life relationship is captured by the photograph of 17-year-old Nanda.
2. Compact Complexity from Alannah Harding
(Alannah Harding)
Harding 17, gives a microscopic view of a mouse embryo’s core, surrounded by other organs. The picture was shot at Queen Alexandra Sixth Form College at North Shields, England.
