By • Olalekan Fagbade JUST IN; 135 suspects arrested as JTF invades criminal hideouts The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Safe FCT, has arrested 135 suspects during coordinated raids of criminal hideouts, uncompleted buildings and shanties in the territory. The Commissioner of Police in the FCT, Mr Haruna Garba said this during a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja. He said the JTF was inaugurated by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike to flush out criminal elements out of the territory. Garba said the JTF was made up of personnel of the Nigeria Police, the Military, Civil Defence, and FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services. He said the JTF also, carried out clearance operations in the bushes and forest bordering the FCT. Garba explained that the target of the JTF operation was to flush out armed hoodlums residing along FCT border states of Niger, Nassarawa, Kogi and Kaduna states. “In the course of the operation, the JTF arrested 135 suspects at various black spots in Kwali, Dutse Alhaji, Mpape, Karu, AYA, Nyaya, Karimo, Karshi, Kuje, Airport road, Berger Roundabout, Jabi, Orozo and Mararaba. “Out of these numbers, 75 suspects were arraigned in court for various offences, while 65 were sentenced to pay fine ranging from N5000 to N7000. “The remaining ten were sentenced to community service, while the 39 suspects being paraded are under investigation and will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation,” he said. Garba added that eight of the suspects were arrested in connection with “one chance” robbery, adding that knives, handcuffs and swords were recovered from their vehicles. The CP said 54 vehicles were impounded in the course of the two weeks operation, adding that substantial number of the vehicles had no number plates while others were with tinted glasses. According to him, some of the vehicles were with only plate numbers in front while others have only plate numbers at the back. He said the offending drivers and owners of the vehicles would be arraigned in court. The CP said two locally fabricated guns, one locally made berretta pistol, one revolver double barrel gun with two live cartridges were recovered from some of the suspects. He said three bags and a number of wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, as well as illicit drugs were also recovered from the suspects. (NAN)

Naira Scarty: Banks customers stranded as delay in cash payment lingers
Tumblr media
Commercial banks in some satellite towns of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are yet to start cash payment, leaving customers stranded and frustrated in spite of the Supreme Court ruling. A correspondent who monitored banks in Nyanya, Mararaba, and Karu in Abuja on Tuesday, reports that none of the banks have started paying customers over the counter or via Automated Teller Machines (ATM). The apex court had on Friday nullified the ban on use of the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes saying the notes still remained legal tender until Dec. 31. The gates to the banks’ are still being manned by security officials who barely permit the numerous customers with complaints to go into the banking hall in turns. Some of the customers who spoke said the current development in banks was frustrating. A customer seen at one of the banks, Mr Isa Abdullahi, said: ”I have been here since 10 a.m. and this is 3 p.m. to complain about some failed transactions but I was refused entry. ”The crowd here is discouraging. They are not even listening to anybody here. ”Some people said that after the Presidential and National Assembly elections, the Naira will be released everywhere but that is not the case. ”We are suffering so much in this country. You will have money but you cannot access your money,” he said. Also, Mrs Angel Abiodun, another customer at another bank on Karu road described the situation as annoying. ”I am helpless. I came to my bank to complain about my expired ATM car and also to collect some cash but I was not allowed in. ”If I knew that the situation will turn like this, I wouldn’t have deposited all my money in the bank even when they told us to take our old notes to the bank. ”The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) should do something and save us from this mess,” she said. Also, some PoS operators also confirmed to NAN that the new Naira notes were still scarce. A POS operator, Gami Johnson, said:”I wonder what is happening. We are yet to see the old or new Naira,”. NAN reports that the CBN is yet to respond to the apex court judgment on the old notes. (NAN) Read the full article

Presidential election result: Tension heightens, business activities decline
Tumblr media
It is exactly three days after Nigeria’s Presidential election. Tension is high; uncertainty persists in the country. The long wait for the final result creates anxiety, especially among business owners. The major contenders are Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP. As results continue to trickle in, there is opposition from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Labour Party, LP. The development has created fear of possible violence in the minds of investors and a cross section of Nigerians. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and other leaders have also warned of dire consequences over alleged manipulation of the exercise. From the Nation’s capital, Abuja, to Ikeja Lagos, there has been palpable fear over the country’s future when the Independent National Electoral Commission completely declares the Presidential election results. The political drama from some Party’s agents at the ongoing National Collation Centre leaves one to ponder. Checks by DAILY POST on Monday found out that business activities were low. The ever-traffic Mararaba-Nyanya road, Kubwa expressway, Lugbe expressway and significant routes in Abuja were non-existent. Businesses in Wuse II, Banex shopping complex, Area 1 UTC, Garki Market and Wuse Market did not record the usual flow of customers. Also, a check at Federal Secretariat Complex in Abuja showed that most civil servants were yet to resume work. It is a similar situation in Nasarawa, Niger, Edo, Delta, Kogi and other states as businesses are partially closed. Mr Chijioke Egege, a business owner at Area 1 UTC market, confirmed a low customer turnout. He said, “Abuja was practically dry today for the obvious reason- the presidential election. There is tension everywhere, so customers are careful not to go out.” Helen Adamu said “the situation is not only in Abuja; other states are experiencing an economic shutdown because of the election.” “My family in Benue and River states mentioned that business activities were slow on Monday due to the election. The tension of possible post-electoral violence may have taken most people away from the street”, she said. Mr Kabiru Abubakar, a resident of Karu, said the road is scanty, same with offices today. “It is not a good thing for businesses to shut down, whether partially or totally. There should not be a decline in economic activities because Nigerians have suffered much from cash scarcity,” he said. In a chat with the DAILY POST, the CEO of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, CPPE, Dr Muda Yusuf, said the anxiety arising from the ongoing declaration of Presidential election results would send a wrong signal to the business community. “It is not right for the economy, but people are being cautious again. This highly contested election has created huge anxiety; the collation process has heightened the tension. The report of violence is also sending terrible signals to people in business”. Also, a Professor of Management and Accounting at Lead University, Ibadan, Godwin Oyedokun, said the country is economically in a mess. “Only a few can afford to eat without knowing the prices of food in the market. Politicians do not care about the country’s state,” he said. On his part, An economic expert, Idakolo Gbolade, urged the incoming president to prioritise the country’s economy. “The incoming government should first look at the CBN policies in taming inflation with a view to making some fundamental changes in the Naira redesign policy. The exchange rate policy allows market forces to determine the rate and encourage CBN to look at the continuous increase in the MPR, which has not tamed inflation. “The incoming government should set up a committee to look at the removal of fuel subsidies with palliative measures put in place to alleviate the suffering of the people. “There should be an immediate stakeholders’ meeting in the energy sector to look at the issues affecting the adequate delivery of energy to the industrial sector and the high electricity tariffs imposed on Nigerians. “The incoming government should organise a think tank session addressing the mass exodus of Nigerian professionals leaving the country in droves. “Finally, the incoming government should critically review our agricultural policies because we have not achieved much success that can boost the economy and reduce poverty in the land,” he said. As the declaration of the result becomes clearer, Nigerians await the magical ideas the country’s next president would bring on board to tackle its ailing economy. Read the full article

Confusion in Mararaba, as vigilance group, traders clash
Tumblr media
The ever busy Maraba area in Nasarawa State was on Saturday night thrown into confusion when members of a vigilance group stormed the area to dislodge traders that had displayed their wares under the overhead bridge. The vigilance group, said to be working for the state government, had insisted that the traders must halt their trading activities, a directive the traders resisted, leading to a clash that sent the fear-stricken traders and their customers scampering in various direction. Many of the traders and other passers-by took to their heels, running into each other in the process. Many traders lost their goods as they were either destroyed by the vigilance group members or trampled upon by people fleeing the scene. The situation got even worse when hoodlums took advantage of the confusion to make bonfires in the middle of the busy road, an action that disrupted vehicular movement and caused heavy traffic gridlock. Many vehicles were destroyed in the confusion as drivers abandoned their cars in the middle of the road and ran away to avoid being caught in the crisis. Policemen arrived the scene in about five pick-ups vans and shot tear gas canisters into the crisis area to disperse the protesting traders and members of the vigilance group. One of the traders said that the fight over the “night trade” between the traders and the Nasarawa State Government officials had been on “for more than three weeks now”. He said that the street traders were given notice to move to the new Muhammadu Buhari’s International Market, and warned against displaying goods on the roads which had often affected human and vehicular movements. “Government’s argument is that night business usually give bag and phone snatchers the opportunity to perpetrate their evil deeds. Some traders complied, but majority of them ignored the directive,” he said. A resident of the area, who refused to disclose his name said that the traders usually come in the evenings when they believe that the task force members had closed for the day. “They (traders), mass into this place every evening with their wares. This evening’s raid caught them unawares,” he said. As at the time of filing this report, Policemen were seen trying to clear the roads of the debris of burnt tyres, woods and other dangerous items used to block the road, so as to ensure free flow of traffic.
