Flow and effects on mental health
“Flow theory describes a state of being in which a person becomes so involved in an activity or experience that nothing else seems to matter; hence, it is often known as the optimal experience or enjoyment (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990, 1997; Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2009).
As Gardner, Csikszentmihalyi, and Damon (2001) remarked:
In flow we feel totally involved, lost in a seemingly effortless performance. Paradoxically, we feel 100 percent alive when we are so committed to the task at hand that we lose track of time, our interests – even of our own existence. (p. 5).
In addition, Gardner and his colleagues underscored that flow can happen anywhere, such as when listening to music, reading a book, playing a good game of squash or chess or being involved in community engagement activities....
Helping people with various types of mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, experience flow (enjoyment in life) has been suggested by various mental health researchers and counselors (e.g. Seligman, Reivich, Jaycox, & Gillham, 2007). Likewise, flow principles have been used in the context of psychotherapy, in which an individual’s life is restructured to allow for more flow experiences (e.g. Massimini & Delle Fave, 2000). To this end, Peterson (2006) stated:
Common to many psychological problems is a routinization of what is done, and if the routine is a rut, then one is apt to stay in it. Consider watching television versus perform- ing volunteer work. Do we ever hear someone say “Damn, I’m getting good at watching TV! I can’t wait until tomorrow to perfect my technique.” But something like volunteer work can be challenging when it requires a whole host of skills that must be developed on an ongoing basis. Is it any surprise that a depressed or anxious person who spends more time helping others than watching television shows a reduction in symptoms ...? (p. 68)
How flow theory and the SLP are integrated into mental health counseling should be based on the client’s presenting problem(s) and personality, research-based evidence of how specific mental health counseling strategies influence specific mental health disor- ders, and counseling theory. With this said, however, the following explains the four broad-based pragmatic ideas, or beginning steps, regarding how flow theory and the SLP can be integrated into mental health counseling.
First, mental health counselors need to understand the difference between serious leisure, casual leisure, and project-based leisure and understand that the flow experience (enjoyment) is connected to serious leisure (and not casual leisure) and the hedonistic experience (pleasure) is associated with casual leisure, (project-based leisure has ele- ments of both flow and hedonism). Moreover, a mental health counselor should be knowledgeable regarding research-based finding of the health benefits of serious leisure (e.g. fulfillment, meaning-making in life) and casual leisure (e.g. interpersonal relation- ships).
Second, mental health counselors should become aware of various assessment instruments that measure flow and serious leisure.
Third, if mental health counselors want clients to experience flow via becoming involved in new serious leisure activities, mental health counselors need to integrate the provision characteristics of flow (or the conditions for entering flow) (see Nakamura & Csikszentmihalyi, 2009) into the counseling process. These provision characteristics include helping clients gain accurate perceptions of the leisure challenge and skill level (or community opportunities for actions) that stretch skill levels but do not overwhelm clients. Counselors can also help clients develop clear proximal goals and create a reflective state related to client progress in the leisure pursuit.
Fourth, serious leisure endeavors can be used to help clients become community change agents.”
