Today a framed photo of Dad watches over Jesus, now 35, and Juan, 33, from a corner of their year-old Deadend Magazine retail store (16 Midtown Lane, Salinas; www.deadendmagazine.com). Deadend has grown into a brand that draws 83,000 Instagram followers, customers who want their T-shirts and hoodies, and international fan mail — West Coast lowrider culture is huge in parts of Japan. Branded gear like trucker hats, flags and coach jackets, and tubes of Sauvecito Pomade hair gel is surrounded by crisp photos of custom American classic cars, chop tops, lowriders and souped-up hot rods including a 1954 Chevy 210, a 1934 Ford three-window coup and a 1964 Impala, all with immaculate paint jobs. The brothers get to indulge their obsession for classic cars, traveling to and covering 70 events a year, hosting their own 300-vehicle Custom Capitol gathering in Prunedale’s Manzanita Park and doing two Burrito Bike Ride benefits a year. For decades El Charrito’s throwback family-run market stocked shelves with detergent and canned food, while its hot counter with abuelita’s recipes did relentless business. [...] the dusty groceries are gone, the hot counter has tripled in size, the menu is digital, and a smartphone app allows for orders on the move. What hasn’t changed are the affordable prices, the habit-forming homemade flour tortillas (available in stacks a la carte), or the heaven-sent chile verde and chile relleno burritos. The most common refrain heard from newcomers here goes like this: “There’s nothing like this in Salinas!” That is, if newcomers discover it at all, as owner-operator-self-described “one-man show” Will Devoe likes to keep things low-key. The Salinas spot doubles as a tasting room, with big and shiny equipment setting off a stone-and-metal bar with 16 taps and a 40-seat outdoor beer garden that debuted as this went to press. Francisco “Franky” Mandujano worked at the perennial winner for best sushi in Monterey County for years (Crystal Fish in Pacific Grove) before hanging his own shingle in a totally under-the-radar spot in unincorporated Prunedale. Tucked in a strip mall overlooked by most everyone — but conveniently located right next to Highway 101 — it is proudly “Mexican-owned and Mexican-managed” with Mandujano all smiles behind the sushi bar, with a gift for California-Japanese fusion.
