Nicolas Berland est professeur à l'Université Paris-Dauphine et responsable du Master Contrôle de gestion. Spécialisé en contrôle de gestion et dans le pilotage des organisations, il travaille plus particulièrement sur les processus d’implantation dans des contextes stratégiques variés : entreprises privées et organisations publiques. Un minidrone équipé d'un gel spécial, qui lui permet de polliniser des fleurs, a été créé par des chercheurs japonais pour venir en aide aux abeilles. Cet insecte est essentiel pour féconder les récoltes, mais il est menacé par la pollution et les pesticides.

Ces abeilles qui donnent du pouvoir aux femme

Ce petit robot pollinisateur télécommandé, muni de quatre hélices, est recouvert de trois millions de poils de cheval enduits d'un gel ionique, c'est-à-dire électriquement chargé, qui capture le pollen sur une fleur avant d'aller le déposer sur les pistils d'une autre, expliquent les scientifiques de l'institut national japonais de science industrielle avancée de recherches technologiques sur les nanomatériaux (AIST).

Ces travaux menés notamment par le chimiste Eijiro Miyako étaient publiés jeudi dans la revue américaine Chem. Ces drones peuvent fonctionner 150 minutes grâce à une pile rechargeable. Dans des expériences séparées avec des fourmis et des mouches, ce gel, découvert, par hasard, dix ans plus tôt par Eijiro Miyako, a également des effets de camouflage, car il change de couleur selon les différentes sources lumineuses.

Quand la pollinisation se fait à la main...

Cette propriété pourrait permettre de protéger les minirobots pollinisateurs contre des prédateurs qui essaieraient de les détruire en les prenant pour des insectes. Une propagation robotisée du pollen, dont la taille varie de 10 à 100 microns avec de multiples formes, a tout d'abord le potentiel de remplacer la pollinisation manuelle, fastidieuse et coûteuse, qui est encore pratiquée pour certaines cultures.

Les agriculteurs qui veulent créer des espèces hybrides ou éviter une pollinisation sauvage n'ont en effet pas d'autre choix que de polliniser leurs cultures à la main en utilisant des pinceaux, expliquent ces chercheurs.

Dans la province chinoise du Sichuan, des poiriers et pommiers qui produisent des fruits très prisés sont ainsi pollinisés à la main, les producteurs recourant même aux pesticides pour éliminer tous les insectes et éviter une pollinisation sauvage par d'autres variétés.

Les abeilles en grand danger

Mais ce procédé est utilisé sur des superficies assez réduites. Une pollinisation manuelle des vastes étendues de pommiers aux Etats-Unis coûterait par exemple quelque 880 millions de dollars, selon les estimations de ces chercheurs.

Le recours à une pollinisation avec des insectes-robots sophistiqués est de ce fait une option attrayante surtout face à la diminution rapide du nombre d'abeilles dans le monde. Au rythme actuel du déclin des populations de ces insectes, les pollinisateurs robotisés pourraient bien être un jour la seule alternative.

Les colonies d'abeilles sont décimées depuis quelques décennies par la maladie et des parasites ainsi que par les effets néfastes des pesticides. Les récoltes de fruits et de légumes pollinisées par les abeilles représentent plus de 15 milliards de dollars chaque année aux Etats-Unis. L'apparition de robots pollinisateurs est devenue possible grâce aux récentes avancées en microfabrication, qui permettent de produire des machines intelligentes d'une taille approchant celle des abeilles.

Un jour, des pollinisateurs artificiels ?

Les progrès dans la vision artificielle et le recours au GPS ouvrent également la voie à des robots autonomes. «Ces découvertes, qui auront des applications pour l'agriculture et la robotique entre autres, pourraient aboutir à la mise au point de pollinisateurs artificiels et aider à répondre aux problèmes résultant du déclin des populations d'abeilles», estime Eijiro Miyako.

«Nous sommes convaincus que ces pollinisateurs robotiques pourront être programmés pour suivre les trajets de pollinisation en utilisant le GPS et l'intelligence artificielle», ajoute-t-il. Bien que ces travaux soient encore loin d'être mis en application dans les cultures, ils représentent un premier pas pour se préparer à un avenir dans lequel les abeilles seront plus rares.

Outre ces scientifiques japonais, plusieurs équipes de recherche travaillent à la mise au point de tels minirobots pollinisateurs, à l'université de Harvard ou au sein du groupe Google notamment.

Inspired by a loom, suspended furniture lets a tangle of threads down, sneaking between the strings of a grand piano, weaving in and out by motor or by hand. Like the action of excessively long bows, the sound result that occurs by friction is massive, pointillist. The colored threads stand out, delicate and vibrant, in the high and empty space that overhangs the piano. As the lines of several fluorescent pencils, they tear the sounds out of the instrument's belly, while indulging in their fragile tension, mechanical kinetics. On the other hand, as part of the prepared piano current, chosen objects are arranged/manipuled on a selection of strings to otherwise color the sound. The work also offers a performance of about thirty minutes in which the behavior of the programmable object and its interaction with human sensitivity is explored. Philippe Lauzier and Belinda Campbell lend themselves to this exploration, in order to offer, through a composition path by Philippe, a lively experience within the sound installation.

Inspiré d'un métier à tisser, un mobilier suspendu laisse descendre un enchevêtrement de fils se faufilant entre les cordes du piano, ceux-ci pouvant s'embobiner et se désembobiner de façon motorisée ou manuelle. Comme l'action d'archets démesurément longs, le résultat sonore qui se produit par frottements est massif, pointilliste. Les fils colorés se détachent, délicats et vibrants, dans l'espace haut et vide qui surplombe le piano. Tels les traits de plusieurs crayons fluorescents, ils arrachent les sons au ventre de l'instrument tout en se livrant dans leur tension fragile, à une cinétique mécanique. D'autre part, s'inscrivant dans le courant du piano préparé, des objets choisis sont disposés/activés sur une sélection de cordes pour colorer autrement la sonorité. L'oeuvre propose aussi une performance d'une trentaine de minutes où l'on explore comment le comportement de l'objet programmable peut entrer en interaction avec le jeu d'une sensibilité humaine. Philippe Lauzier et Belinda Campbell se prêtent à cette exploration pour offrir, dans une composition de Philippe, une expérience vivante à l'intérieur de l'installation sonore.

À 9h30, nous recevons de la part des services techniques une planche de bois pour nous servir d’enseigne. Nous avions en effet le souhait de pouvoir être visibles de loin, et donc d’apposer le nom “Atelier Commun” sur la façade. Dès réception nous nous attaquons à sa confection : les drapeaux marins signifiant Bangor, puis “l’atelier commun”, tout peint à la main. C’est l’occasion pour certains d’apprendre à tenir un pinceau… Nous attendrons demain pour l’accrocher. On espère qu’elle résistera à la pluie.

Une fois les travaux manuels finis, il est temps de travailler. On s’attaque à revenir sur le travail du semestre dernier. Axé sur l’insularité, nous l’avions axé sur les perspectives d’autonomie et de proximité, nécessaires pour un développement vertueux de ces territoires. Comment créer des leviers pour plus d’autonomie? Quelle est la bonne échelle? Bangor? Belle-Île? Et pour faire ressortir ces leviers, il faudra organiser le débat puis faire un inventaire des alternatives. À suivre....

Le centre bourg vit au rythme des sorties, il s’anime à 8h puis à 16h30 jusqu'à 18h. Nous y retrouvons Bernard Poirier et sa femme, qui étaient passés un peu plus tôt à l’Atelier. Tous les deux ingénieurs agronomes retraités, et lui ancien maire de Mordelles et président du SCOT - Pays de Rennes. Ici pour garder leur petite fille, ils nous parlent de l’effet “insulaire” sur les petites communes, les rendant dynamiques malgré le faible nombre d’habitants. Ils repasseront pour discuter plus en détail avec nous. À bientôt!

Notre rencontre avec Estelle fut l’occasion de lui présenter les ateliers que nous souhaitons organiser avec les enfants. Le but est de nourrir une réflexion sur la culture du lieu, en les faisant travailler sur leur imaginaire et leur pratique de Bangor. Estelle nous prévient que nous serons peut-être déçus par l’hétérogénéité des réponses. On verra, n’ayons pas peur de la complexité…

Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio kinetics in patients with advanced solid tumours on phase I trials of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors

Mechanistically, PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors may alter NLR. We sought to characterise NLR kinetics in patients with advanced solid tumours treated with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors.MethodsElectronic records of patients treated with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors on phase I trials across three sites were reviewed. A high NLR (hNLR) was predefined as >5. Univariate logistic regression models were used for toxicity, response analyses and Cox models for overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival analyses. Landmark analyses were performed (cycle two, three). Longitudinal analysis of NLR was performed utilising a mixed effect regression model.ResultsThe median OS for patients with hNLR was 8.5 months and 19.4 for patients with low NLR, (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.85, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.15–2.96, p = 0.01). On landmark analysis, hNLR was significantly associated with inferior OS at all time points with a similar magnitude of effect over time (p < 0.05). On multivariate analysis, NLR was associated with OS (HR 1.06, 95% CI 1.01–1.11, p = 0.01). NLR did not correlate with increased immune toxicity. Longitudinally, NLR correlated with response: NLR decreased by 0.09 (95% CI: −0.15 to −0.02; p = 0.01) per month in responders compared with non-responders.ConclusionshNLR at baseline and during treatment is adversely prognostic in patients with advanced malignancies receiving PD-1/PD-L1 blockade. Importantly, NLR reduced over time in responders to immunotherapy. The Prettiest House Ever?

This month, there has been a rash of blog stories about a newly restored house in Provence. Of course the house is right up my alley, it’s in France – and it was renovated by the team of Alexandre Lafourcade. While he restores the Provencal buildings, Alexandre’s mother, Dominque, restores the gardens. Dominque’s husband and Alexandre’s father, the company’s founder Bruno, sadly passed away last year.

Long time readers know the name Lafourcade. The name first came to the attention of those in the states when Veranda did THAT story on interior designer Ginny Magher. It was Magher’s Lafourcade-restored mas that defined the Provencal look: the long facade with French blue shutters, plane trees, gravel courts, and stucco walls with tile roofs.

When Veranda showed the Magher’s Mas in 2000, it was a universally loved story. Their Provence house became the “one” that everyone desired.

This was the cover which showed Ginny’s Provencal master bedroom with the glorious Manuel Canovas fabric. Mario Buatta famously used this same fabric in French blue in Pat Altschul’s bedroom at her Southerly estate.

The two story entry is a favorite room. Love this!

And this photo of the Magher’s estate shows the genius that is Dominique. Here is the BEFORE shot of a typical pergola.

AFTER: Just a few years later, Ginny’s brand new pergola looks like its been there for 100 years.

The Magher Veranda cover story brought much attention to Ginny, of course, but it also introduced the Lafourcades to America. Their web site showed other fabulous renovations by Bruno, Alexandre and Dominque and over the years their reputations have became legendary due to their exquisite taste and their ability to recreate a masterpiece.

And so, when photos of a newly renovated Mas started showing up on Instagram, people took notice. Was it a new Lafourcade?

Even Ginny herself took notice with this comment on Instagram:

Ginny: “Your house looks very similar to our Mas de BARAQUET in Provence. Ours was a Bruno Lafourcade collaboration. Your Mas de Poiriers is gorgeous. Bravo.”

I guess all Lafourcades-clients feel related to each other. I loved seeing that Ginny commented on the new Mas.

News of the new Mas is spreading fast. It started this way:

This summer while in Provence, popular fashionista Julia Engel of “Gal Meets Glam” paid a visit to the Mas and everyone on Instagram looked and then did a double take.

The house is gorgeous.

Beyond gorgeous.

Forget about millenniums and forget about contemporary design. Put all that aside. Just clear your mind of anything “nu.”

This is classic French design. Country French at its best.

And this house will make you remember why you ever loved French design to begin with. And, this house will make you wish you had never left it all behind.

It’s always the same lesson we have to relearn over and over again: classic is best and nothing much can top it.

OK.

So with all those stories already written, what is left for me to blog about?

Usually when a few popular bloggers have already written about a house that I particularly like, I will walk away from the story in order to avoid repetition.

BUT - there is my “Mother” rule.

“The Mother Rule”

If a previously written story is something I think my own mother would love to read about and if I know my mother never read about it before and never would read about it unless I wrote about it….

then I’ll write about it.

The Mother Rule.

I proved this theory to myself.

I posted a photo of a bedroom from this new Mas on my Instagram and I immediately got a phone call from my mother, Betty Rae. (To read all about the infamous Betty Rae, go HERE.)

Shortly after I posted the photo from the Mas on my instagram, Betty Rae calls me: “Have you shown this bedroom to your sister Cathy?” And more: “Be sure you send this photo to Cathy!” Betty Rae is now 87. She doesn’t quite realize that Cathy already sees all my Instagrams regardless – no need to mail her the photos.

But that’s besides the point. Betty Rae’s excitement about the photo from the Mas showed me I had to write the story for her, despite the fact that several other popular blogs had already written about the house.

And then this happened:

I found a new treasure trove of photos on the Mas’ rental web site that hadn’t been seen on those other blogs yet…

So, Betty Rae, this one is for you!

The mas is called “Le Mas des Poiriers” and it is located right outside Avignon on the Isle de la Motte – an actual tiny island formed by the branches of the river. The mas is located on 65 acres, filled with pear orchards, hence its name. There are 7 bedrooms, plus 2 more in a guest house. It’s all available to lease (details below.) But don’t think you are going to check in on a Tuesday and leave on a Wednesday. It doesn’t work that way.

This is a house to cherish lovingly and slowly.

The interiors were done by SBLong Interiors of Dallas & Connecticut. Talk about a dream job!

But hard.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must have been for Susan B. Long to completely furnish a working house for a large family – and to do it all from across the globe. The owners of the Mas have five children and their numbers are rapidly expanding with in-laws. The family is as beautiful as the house – large, loving, close, philanthropic, and adventure-seeking. The family has lived all over the world, literally, for different work assignments. Moving so often, they have owed a number of homes and over the years, at least five of their houses have been decorated by SBLong Interiors.

This house in Connecticut designed by Susan Long is the family’s main base now, after a life time of living abroad. Definitely not country French, the house is very sophisticated, very chic, very classic traditional decor. HERE.

Instead of French antiques, Long used a lot of English antiques in their mountain home.

What’s the connection to Provence?

The family had rented vacation houses in Provence and one summer they stayed in the perfect house. It was large enough for the family and its location was secluded yet close to antique shopping and great food. As luck would have it, that mas was for sale.

Who you going to call?

The Lafourcades!

When the family decided to take on the challenge and restore the Mas, they knew just who was up for the job.

Alexandre and his team renovated the house while Dominque completely recreated the extensive gardens, swimming pool, and tennis courts.

The Mas has been an new adventure for the family - now dealing with children marrying and younger children leaving for college – this house will be a place they all come to be together again.

The renovation by Alexandre involved moving the front door to create a new grand foyer and stone staircase. Rooms were reworked, ceilings were raised and stone floors were installed on the first floor, with antique terra cotta tiles going upstairs. Much needed closets were added, many flanking the beds. Bathrooms are all white marble. There’s a new master suite along with a mud room in a barn that for centuries had just a dirt floor. Additionally, there are newly installed fireplace mantels throughout. The house is filled with antiques that were handpicked in France by SBLong and the owner. Tough duty, I know! And note: not everything was bought – some pieces were inherited with the sale of the house.

The one design choice that proved genius was the fabric. All fabrics were purchased from Pierre Frey. Taken together as a whole, these French prints create a certain mood. Any other fabric would have looked too trendy, too en-vogue, too English. The Pierre Freys are the correct choice and make perfect sense. Another SBLong fabulous yet important decision.

The last step has been the landscaping which was installed by Dominque Lafourcade. A wisteria covered walkway leads to the newly built pool and a rose covered arbor lays on an axis off the living room. A tennis court now has its own charming house while the old barn was renovated for staff apartments.

Here is how the Mas looked when it was first purchased. Pretty, but in need up an update. Originally the shutters were burgundy - today, they are French blue. The open air building to the left is now the orangery.

The pool is new – before it was on the front lawn. Behind the house is the large barn which now holds offices and apartments for the staff.

AFTER: The shutters are now blue. Notice the blue and white fabrics on the furniture – stripes and checks. Gravel terrace.

This is the corner between the long facade and the kitchen facade.

The front view – the large arched window is now the living room. At the very left – the other large window is the orangery. Many of the photos are not completely staged yet. You can see the step ladder was left out in view – but that’s ok. It will be forever before a magazine properly photographs the house. We can wait.

This allee of tall cypress was added by Dominque to accentuate the center axis of the house.

This makes a natural place for outdoor parties – one long table between the cypress. Seriously pretty.

Understand – this house was just finished. Just! The owners and designer have been posting photos of the installation for months now. It was a huge undertaking. Be sure to look at their instagrams (posted at the end) for all the before and during photos!!

The next room to the large salon is the dining room with its two crystal chandeliers. The large table doubles as a library table. This is just too pretty for words!

I love the check on the chairs – you can never have too many checks in one house! With such a large family – you need large tables with lots of chairs.

The living room is at the right and at the left is the orangery. I think this was once a open garage/barn.

Love the fabric on the chairs. More identical chairs are set up outside the orangery. The owner said in an interview this was one of her favorite rooms.

And this room – with custom colored fabric and a wonderful painting with a sofa with a velvet cushion. The custom colored fabric is the Le Manach pattern "Victor Hugo Bordures." Guess where this room is! I don’t know! No other photos! I looked! No fair!

And the charming laundry room. With a family of nine, you need lots of towels!

The Bedrooms:

The master suite. Look at that bed!!! What a canopy. And notice the Swedish bench at the foot of the bed. Hidden between the bed and the sofa is a TV cabinet. Closets on both sides of the bed – added after the fact.

Apparently, this was all the fabric the owner could get of this pattern. So, the canopy was made of plain fabric. But I think this is perfect – I love the plain cream fabric – it sets off all the patterned fabric.

Before the canopy was completed, this photograph was taken. Such a pretty room with all the large windows. Corner rooms make for lots of windows.

Apparently this was in the area that was once the barn and it is the room above what is now the living room. This room connects to the upper floor of the orangery through its closet.

Notice the wainscot in the bathroom – and in a lot of rooms in the house. It’s painted on!! Details, details, details. I’m telling you Susan Long did a fabulous job!

Ah! Thank you! The door is now closed. The shower is incredible with its matched marble.

Now think about all the bathrooms that people are doing today using every kind of tile there is, just to be “different” – why? Isn’t the white marble the perfect choice?

Can’t afford marble slabs like this – go for marble subway tiles. It’s as effective as this, almost as fabulous, and it’s just as classy and chic.

Guest Room – well, this might be the prettiest of the lot. Hard to judge. The designer said she loved the peach fabric that was used to line the canopy. I love the canopy – SBLong designs for the canopies are incredible. I love the curves on her canopies. And notice the lantern – all the details, all the minute details, and Susan Long still took the time to put the trim on the lantern chain. Amazing work.

Can I stay in this room? Even if I’m not a daughter?

I promise to be neat!

Notice how beautifully placed the Tree of Life fabric is – and remember, Susan Long lives in DALLAS!!!!!

But this is my favorite – the oval portrait of a lady and her cat? or dog? between the luscious curtains.

There’s more!!! Look how pretty this side of the room is – the old doors, the antique mantel, the trumeau, the antique chairs. This room must be in an older section of the house with its beamed ceiling.

I’m sorry – there can’t be too many photos of this gorgeous bedroom!

Well, this guest room is another favorite. The check is in dark and light French blue. The blue velvet pillows are so pretty. The alcove with tis Pierre Frey fabric is flanked by two closets.

Love this room.

Wait I was wrong!! Can I stay in here instead? I’ll just move my own bags. Don’t mean to be a bother. Gracias!!!

Bedroom #6 - A small bedroom on the corner which makes it extra bright and light with its many windows. Such a pretty ribbon fabric matched with a tiny check.

I love two things especially – all the beds are made with white cotton duvets and sheets AND I love all the seagrass on the floor. Some seagrass is layered with an antique rug, but most times, it’s left in all its glory. The corner room with the extra windows. Pretty trumeau.

Poirier, 1950, p. 212). Aussi bien Marcel Mauss était-il le dernier homme au monde à pouvoir publier un « Cours ». Son cours était pour lui une sorte de conversation à peine ordonnée, un exposé de caractère apparemment décousu (…) (P. Histoire et technologie[iii] se définissent, au sein de systèmes techniques dynamiques – du point de vue de l’historien des techniques (T. Hugues, 1998, in [4] p.857 ou B. Gille, 1979) ou au sein de réseaux d’acteurs – du point de vue de sociologues héritiers de M. Mauss (T. Hughes, O. Coutard, 1996, p. 41), avec toutefois deux difficultés : la première touche à la réflexivité de l’historien – technicien par rapport à son objet de recherche, aussi sujet-acteur de ses propres pratiques scientifiques (défricheur, accumulateur, créateur individuel ou correcteur d’entrants saillants sur une ou des « frontières mobiles »), difficulté qui conduit à s’interroger sur ce qu’est l’histoire des techniques ou l’histoire des technologies (history of technology), dont les tentatives de définitions successives (L. Marx, D. Edgerton, etc.) conduisent à conclure à une forme de circularité que résume de manière limpide Hannah Arendt (H. Rubén Darío (1867 – 1916) Félix Rubén García Sarmiento mejor conocido como Rubén Darío nació en el poblado de Metapa hoy Ciudad Darío, Matagalpa el 18 de Enero de 1867. Fue el primer hijo del matrimonio formado por Manuel García y Rosa Sarmiento, quienes se habían casado en León (Nicaragua) un año antes, desgraciadamente el matrimonio García - Sarmiento no marchaba nada bien y para hacer más llevadera la mutua incomprensión, el incansable Manuel se entregaba inmoderadamente a las farras y ahogaba sus penas en el acohol y en las prostitutas, lo que obligo a Rosa ya embarazda a tomar la decisión de abandonar el hogar conyugal y refugiarse en el poblado de Metapa, en la que dio a luz a su hijo, Félix Rubén. Despues de algun tiempo el matrimonio terminó por reconciliarse, e incluso Rosa llegó a dar a luz a otra hija de Manuel a la que llamaron Cándida Rosa, quien murió a los pocos días. La relación volvió a deteriorarse y Rosa abandonó a su marido para ir a vivir con su hijo en casa de una tía suya, Bernarda Sarmiento que vivía con su esposo, el coronel Félix Ramírez en la Ciudad de León. Donde Rosa conoció poco después a otro hombre llamado Juan Benito Soriano y estableció con él su residencia en San Marcos de Colón, en el Departamento de Choluteca, Honduras yendose a vivir con ellos el pequeño Rubén que poco tiempo despues regresó a León para residir al lado de sus tios. La niñez de Rubén Darío transcurrió en la Ciudad de León, criado por sus tíos abuelos Félix Ramirez y Bernarda Sarmiento, a quienes consideró en su infancia sus verdaderos padres, tenia muy poco contacto con su madre ni con su padre, a quien llamaba "tío Manuel". Rubén era un niño prodigio desde sus primeros años de infancia, precoz versificador infantil, el mismo Rubén no recordaba cuándo empezó a componer poemas, pero sí que ya sabía leer a los tres años. En 1871 su tio Félix Ramírez falleció y la familia pasó apuros económicos, e incluso se pensó en colocar al joven Rubén como aprendiz de sastre, asistió a varias escuelas de la Ciudad de León y en los años 1879 y 1880 estudió con los jesuitas, a los que dedicó algún poema cargado de invectivas, aludiendo a sus "sotanas carcomidas" y motejándolos de "endriagos". El hogar del coronel Félix Ramírez era centro de célebres tertulias que congregaban a la intelectualidad del país, en este ambiente culto creció Darío, entre los primeros libros que leyó el pequeño Darío están El Quijote, las obras de Moratín, La Bilblia, Las mil y una noches los Oficios de Cicerón y la Corina, pronto empezó también a escribir sus primeros versos, se conserva un soneto escrito por él en 1879, publicó por primera vez en un periódico poco después de cumplir los trece años, se trata de la elegía "Una lágrima", que apareció en el diario El Termómetro de la Ciudad de Rivas en 1880. Tambien colaboro en el Ensayo (revista literaria de la Ciudad de León) y en muy poco tiempo alcanzó la fama de poeta niño, en sus primeros versos sus influencias predominantes eran los poetas españoles de la época Nuñez de Arce, Ventura de la Vega, Campoamor entre otros y mas adelante se interesó mucho por la obra de Bécquer y Victor Hugo que tendrían una influencia determinante en su labor poética. A sus catorce años proyectó publicar un primer libro, poesías y artículos en prosa, algo que no pudo lograr en su momento. Rubén poseía una superdotada memoria, gozaba de una creatividad y retentiva genial, y era invitado con frecuencia a recitar poesía en reuniones sociales y actos públicos. En Diciembre de 1881 se traslada a Managua debido a que algunos politicos de la epoca habian concebido la idea de que por sus dotes poéticas el joven Darío podría estudiar en Europa a costa del erario público, lo cual no fue aprobado por el presidente del congreso y se resolvio que estudiaría en la Ciudad de Granada. Pero Darío prefirió quedarse en Managua donde continuó con su actividad periodística y trabajo como colaborador para los diarios El Ferrocarril y El Porvenir de Nicaragua y en agosto de 1882 parte desde el puerto de Corinto hacia el país vecino de El Salvador. En El Salvador, Darío fue presentado al presidente de la república, Rafael Saldivar quien lo acogió bajo su protección. Conoció al poeta Salvadoreño Francisco Gavidia, gran conocedor de la poesía francesa. Al lado del poeta Gavidia Darío intentó por primera vez adaptar el verso alejandrino francés a la métrica castellana. El uso del verso alejandrino se convertiría después en un rasgo distintivo no sólo de la obra de Darío, sino de toda la poesía modernista. En El Salvador Darío gozó de bastante celebridad y llevó una intensa vida social, participando en festejos pero más tarde las cosas comenzaron a empeorar, pasó penalidades económicas y enfermó de viruela por lo que en Octubre de 1883 aún convaleciente decide regresar a su País natal. Despues de su regreso vivio brevemente en León y despues en Granada pero finalmente regresó a Managua donde trabajo en la Biblioteca Nacional, para esta época reanudó sus amorios con Rosario Emelina Murillo, una joven que había conocido antes de cumplir sus quince años y antes de viajar a El Salvador. Para 1884 Darío había escrito un libro llamado Epístolas y poemas pero como en la primera ocasión este segundo libro tampoco llegó a publicarse, trabajó en teatro, incluso llegó a estrenar una obra llamada: Cada Oveja, que tuvo algo de éxito, pero que hoy no se conoce. En este elocuente episodio, Rubén expresa sin tapujos sus ambiciones burguesas por lo cual encontraba insatisfactoria la vida en Managua y el 5 de Junio de 1886 se embarca rumbo a Chile donde desembarca en el puerto de Valparaiso el 23 de Junio, allí Darío recibiría la ayuda y protección del poeta Eduardo de la Barra y de Eduardo Poirier, con este último escribió a medias una novela sentimental llamada "Emelina" con el objeto de participar en un concurso literario el cual no llegaron a ganar. Gracias a la amistad de Poirier, Darío encontró trabajo en el diario La Época, de Santiago desde Julio de 1886. Para esta etapa en Chile Darío vivió en condiciones muy precarias, y tuvo además que soportar continuas humillaciones por parte de la aristocracia del País, que lo despreciaba por su escaso refinamiento. Sin embargo llegó a hacer algunas amistades, como el hijo del entonces presidente de la República, el poeta Pedro Balmaceda Toro y gracias al apoyo de éste y de otro amigo, Manuel Rodríguez Mendoza, logró publicar su primer libro de poemas, titulado: Abrojos, que apareció en Marzo de 1887. Entre Febrero y Septiembre de 1887, Darío residió en Valparaiso y aquí participó en varios certámenes literarios. De regreso en la capital, encontró trabajo en el diario El Heraldo, con el que colaboró entre Febrero y Abril de 1888. Fue en este año en el mes de Julio que Rubén Darío publica su obra cumbre "Azul" gracias a la ayda de sus amigos Eduardo Poirier y Eduardo de la Barra, este fué el libro clave de la recién iniciada revolución literaria modernista. "Azul"... recopilaba una serie de poemas y de textos en prosa que ya habían aparecido en la prensa chilena entre Diciembre de 1886 y Junio de 1888. El libro no tuvo un éxito inmediato, pero fue muy bien acogido por el influyente novelista y crítico literario español Juan Valera quien publicó en el diario de Madrid El Imparcial, en Octubre de 1888, Rubén Darío recibe dos cartas, en las cuales, aunque reprochaba a Darío sus excesivas influencias francesas reconocía en él a "un prosista y un poeta de talento". Estas cartas de Valera, luego fueron divulgadas en la prensa chilena y de otros países, las que consagraron definitivamente la fama de Darío. Despues de la publicación del libro Azul Rubén consiguió trabajo con el puesto de corresponsal del diario La Nación en Buenos Aires que era en la época el periódico de mayor difusión de toda Hispanoamérica. Poco después de enviar su primera crónica a La Nación, emprendió el viaje de regreso a Nicaragua. Tras una breve escala en Lima, donde conoció al escritor Ricardo Palma, llegó al puerto de Corinto el 7 de Marzo de 1889. En la ciudad de León fue agasajado con un recibimiento triunfal. Sin embargo Darío no estaría mucho tiempo en Nicaragua y emprende su viaje a El Salvador donde contrajo matrimonio con Rafaela Contreras el 21 de Junio de 1880, en ese mismo mes Darío viajaría a Guatemala quedando Rafaela en El Salvador. En Diciembre de 1890 le fue encomendada la dirección de un periódico de nueva creación, El Correo de la Tarde. Ese mismo año publicó en Guatemala la segunda edición de su exitoso libro de poemas Azul..., sustancialmente ampliado, y llevando como prólogo las dos cartas de Juan Valera que habían supuesto su consagración literaria (desde entonces, es habitual que las cartas de Valera aparezcan en todas las ediciones de este libro de Rubén Darío). Entre las adiciones importantes a la segunda edición de Azul... destacan los Sonetos áureos (Caupolicán, Venus y De invierno) y Los medallones en número de seis a los que se suman los Èchos, tres poemas redactados en francés. En enero del año siguiente, su esposa, Rafaela Contreras, se reunió con él en Guatemala y el 11 de Febrero contrajeron matrimonio religioso en la Catedral de la Ciudad de Guatemala, pero en junio de ese mismo año el diario que Darío dirigía dejó de recibir la subvención gubernamental lo que obligó al cierre del mismo. Darío etonces se trasalada a Costa Rica donde se instaló en agosto de ese año en San José, en Costa Rica donde apenas era capaz de sacar adelante a su familia, agobiado por las deudas a pesar de algunos empleos eventuales, nació su primer hijo, Rubén Darío Contreras, el 12 de Noviembre de 1891. Al año siguiente dejando a su familia en Costa Rica se dirigiaó de nuevo a Guatemala y luego a Nicaragua, en busca de mejor suerte. Inesperadamente el gobierno Nicaragüense lo nombró miembro de la delegación que ese país iba a enviar a España con motivo del cuarto Centenario del descubrimiento de America lo que para Darío suponía ver realizado su sueño de viajar a Europa. En su viaje a España hizo una escala en La Habana, Cuba donde conoció al celebre poeta Julián del Cazal entre otros artistas, el 14 de Agosto de 1892 desembarcó en el puerto de Santander para despues continuar su viaje en tren hacia Madrid. En España Darío conoce a los poetas Gaspar Núñez de Arce, Salvador Rueda, Juan Valera, Emilia Pardo Bazan, el erudito Marcelino Menéndez pelavo y varios destacados políticos, como Emilio Castelar
