Days begin very early now. Barnum goes into his act about 7:00 AM, and it’s time to hit the floor and gallop outdoors for the first dog-walk. It’s ALWAYS freezing rain…
This morning I told him the whole way up the road “Great idea Barn…we could all still be sleeping nice and warm in our beds - but you’re right. WHO would want to miss this? Grey skies, still dark, icy wind and rain down the back of my neck? You are a LEGEND. Thanks for this, it is awesome.”
He was not amused.
But early days push us to get moving and get stuff done. Many stops to make today, and as Murphy needs work to learn how to “car” - he allowed himself to be lured into the back seat with a lot of coaxing, and the leftover bone from last nights lamb stew.
Off we went over hill and dale- Manorhamilton, Sligo, Bundoran - with several errands in each.
Murphy slouched out of the car at the Sligo Pet Food store. We made it to the front door, but his past history set in and he dropped onto his belly, refusing to walk in. I can’t imagine what his former life was like - he seems terrified into some sort of submissive posture when confronted with doorways or moving from outside into a room…?
No pressure from me, just allowed him to come to grips with his fear, and learn that there was nothing that’s going to hurt him. He stood up, and we moved indoors. A nice lad who works there made a big fuss over him and told me “If you ever want to give him up - I WANT HIM” Murphy was fine with the patting and the stranger - so YAY.
We moved down one of the aisles, and he followed cautiously.
Bri was buying the bag of dogfood, and Murphy and I were standing by a bin filled with rawhide snacks. His nose started twitching, he stuck his snoot into the bin, and brought out a rawhide doughnut. He laid it onto the floor, and went back for another one.
He stretched out on the floor while I paid, happily munching his prize. I slipped the second doughnut into my pocket and we headed out to the parking lot, doughnut happily held in his teeth…up into the car, no problem - and he monched his way back home.
Murphy has always refused all offered treats, won’t even consider taking a snack from my hand - even as reward for “sit” “stay” or “NO” Murphy needed to be dragged into the car, and is terribly shy around people and dogs.
BUT
Today is a red-letter day. He had a long car ride (only threw up once) - met some nice people, and went shopping for his own treatos.
We are making progress !

A Short and Bloody Existence
A Short and Bloody Existence
‘One summer night, when there was peace, a score of Puritan troopers, under the pious Sir Frederick Hamilton, broke through the door of the Abbey of White Friars at Sligo. As the door fell with a crash they saw a little knot of friars gathered about the altar, their white habits glimmering in the steady light of the holy candles. All the monks were kneeling except the abbot, who stood upon the…

“Enjoying the Sun”. Photo from Leitrim Observer.
This cow was made in the Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton, of which Artist McKenna is a co-founder. In the studio, Mondays were open access days when farmers coming from the local mart could call in and give their expert opinion on nostril size and hoof measurements.
The sculpture is now on display in Wolfe Tone Park, Dublin

I’ve never been inside the big church in Manorhamilton - until yesterday in the rain.
Trudged up the walk, tugged on the heavy iron ring in the center of the huge door, and was surprised when it swung open.
A few candles in red jars flicker away in the corner. The place is empty, silent, and is a quiet spot to sit, out of the pouring rain.

Day 3 May 18 Carrick-on-Shannon - Donegal 110kms
Day 3 May 18 Carrick-on-Shannon - Donegal 110kms
Today started at 4am when I woke with burning thighs. Don’t know how that happened! I eventually got up at 6am and had an early breakfast, then another one provided by the BnB. It was pretty good and really filled me up. It also meant I didn’t get away until 8:30. I had spent ages scribbling down notes on todays route but it turns out I didn’t need them. There were signs to the significant towns I knew I was passing through so all I had to do was follow them.
This worked well in the morning anyway. It was a beautiful morning! The sun was shining. The turn-off was just a few hundred meters from the BnB and the scenery lovely as usual.
Tumblr media
There was even a tail wind which strengthened during the day making me glad I wasn’t going in the opposite direction. The terrain was undulating, the road  smooth and Shirley sailed along beautifully. Since I was still full from breakfast I decided to ride just under 50kms to Manorhamilton before having a break. This was where all the signs were pointing so I had high hopes for a good cafe. This photo is from the top of the hill just before Manorhamilton.
Tumblr media
Luckily I noticed a sign advertising a cafe called The Loft, on top of the local supermarket. I rolled up to the supermarket, looped a chain around Shirley and made my way upstairs to enjoy this.
Tumblr media
There was even wifi and a view over the town from my table.
Tumblr media
After an enjoyable break spent studying the map I rode out of town stopping to chat to an Irish cyclist who wanted to give me tips on my route. He couldn’t quite understand which way I was going. Now I know why! First I had to tackle the biggest climb of the day. It wasn’t too bad and the run down the other side was great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The view from the road changed a little and I was winding my way around lakes.
Tumblr media
Somewhere I entered Northern Ireland. The roads deteriorated and the signs with directions became scarce. I managed to get to Belleek without any trouble but then things went a bit wrong. Belleek was rather bleak and I saw more of it than I bargained for when I followed the road out. It was the only real road but I seemed to be climbing towards the east and copping the wind more than I had all day. A map check revealed I had gone up that hill for no reason so I rolled back down into Belleek and turned into a small side street with a sign pointing to a car park. Yep, I checked the map, this was it. I realised then I had put the bike option in. I really should know better by now.
It was a actually a real road which wound between lakes and rivers.
Tumblr media
Quite enjoyable really. After about 5kms I checked the map again to find that now I was way off route again out to the west this time. I decided to keep going another 5kms to Ballyshannon and join the N14. I was here 3 years ago so was pretty confident I knew what I was doing.
Getting up onto the motorway was quite tricky. I asked a couple of locals but they both gave directions that would lead to the wrong side. I should have been more specific. After checking the map again I figured it out and looped around then up onto the N14. I had forgotten there was a long slow ascent to tackle first. The downhill was great but these roads are not as smooth as the lesser roads and there was a lot of roadwork….again! At least the road wasn’t closed this time and I used the time at the stop/go holdup to eat a quick chocolate bar.
I cycled the last 15kms into Donegal fairly quickly, assisted by the tailwind and mostly downhill runs.
Tomorrow is definitely going to be shorter! I’m hoping I won’t wake up with burning thighs again tonight and can sleep in instead.
Just hopped up to take photo out my window and it’s raining again. Typical Ireland!!

Going to Market
Set back from Main Street and perhaps the most significant building in Manorhamilton, County Leitrim, this is the former Market House. It dates from 1834 when the design was commissioned by Nathaniel Clements, second Earl of Leitrim from Dublin architect William Farrell. The latter is best known for the many churches he designed across Ulster. The building features crisp sandstone with rusticated…

Customs House - Sophie Foster Opening Reception: Friday 29th November, 5-8pm at Leitrim Sculpture Centre
Tumblr media
Exhibition Statement:
CUSTOMS HOUSE is an area of artistic research into the complexities of borders. Viewing from the map, the Irish border near to where Manorhamilton is situated is more or less invisible, interweaving unconventionally through farmland and homes causing numerous unofficial crossing points that are difficult to concretise. During the course of the residency, artist Sophie Foster visited sections of the north side of the Irish border between Belcoo and Belleek, collecting physical associations of its landscape such as water, stones, sticks and vegetation. These items have been precisely catagorised through the GPS code of where they were found and organised within the exhibition space as a pop up exchange centre. They will be available to be traded with other natural items brought in by the audience members from the Irish Republic side of the border. By asking people to choose and reposition objects from bordering locations, the natural and artificial functions of the border have been reinforced, drawing attention to the socio-geographical contradictions of the current European political debate -  the dividing line reflects on both sides an area of displacement and turbulent history as well as what is now an open border and freedom to cross.
The artist will be available to manage the exchange of goods in the gallery, meet the public and continue the project between 1pm – 4pm weekdays and 11am-4pm on Saturdays.
Biography:
After completing a Combined Honours degree at Newcastle University UK, Sophie Foster remained in the city working as a contemporary artist and arts educator within the lifelong learning sector. She accomplished her first solo exhibition Transitions: At a Snail’s Pace (2012) with the National Glass Centre in Sunderland and later awarded a residency at Northumbria University, working in their paper studio. She is now based in Weimar, DE after recently completing an MFA in Public Art and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar under Prof. Danica Dakić. From there, her work has made a shift into photographic reconstruction, site-specific performance and temporary interventions about narrative, identity, memory and place.
Proud to be supported by the Arts Council.
Light refreshments will be served, everyone welcome.
Exhibition runs until Saturday 14th December.
Gallery opening times
11am-4pm.Thursday to Saturday - Doors open at front of house. Tuesday and Wednesday - Go first to central reception at the side of the building.
