Copper lettering on the side entrance to the French gothic mansion at 2 East 79th Street and Fifth Avenue. Designed by Charles Pierrepont Henry Gilbert in 1897 for New York banker and stockbroker Isaac D. Fletcher. When he died 20 years later he left it to the Met, who then sold it to self-made oil millionaire Harry F. Sinclair and used the money to create the Fletcher Fund for purchases of prints and drawings. The building is still known as the Harry F. Sinclair House. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978. Once the smallest plot of land in Manhattan. Around 1910 when New York City started buying up property in what is now the West Village to extend the old IRT subway line further downtown. David Hess, refused to sell his 5-story apt building at Christopher St & 7th Av. Citing eminent domain law, the city took it anyways, leaving Hess with this tiny triangle. New York City government then asked Hess to donate the land so that it could be used for a public sidewalk. Hess refused and took the city to court. A NYC institution since 1914. Joel Russ, a Polish immigrant who arrived in Manhattan around 1905, started the business to cater to Jewish immigrants settling in the LES. He began by selling Polish Mushrooms on the street off his shoulders while saving to purchase a pushcart. In 1920 he opened his store at the current location: 179 E Houston St. In 1933, he renamed the business “Russ & Daughters” making his 3 daughters, Hattie, Anne, & Ida, partners. They all worked there from the age of 8 and the business is still family owned 4 generations later. Ps.
