Another stain on the American story of manifest destiny and the genocide of #Native people takes place on the morning of 29 December 1890, when the Spotted Elk (Big Foot) band of 350+ are #murdered at #WoundedKnee in present-day #SD. 20 congressional medals of honor are handed out to the troops. - - Today, the #BigFoot riders again make their way into the massacre site after riding the route of the band from that day. We remember and we work for better relations, better understanding, for a recognition of the truth and for the #nationofempathy that is needed. - - In a bitter twist of history, a surviving family member of the #DakotaWar and #Mankatohanging, Ohiyesa or Dr. Charles A Eastman, whose family converted to Christianity, attended to the few survivors of the massacre. Ohiyesa was the primary founder of the #SiouxYMCA throughout the northern plains and into Canada, the only truly indigenous YMCA.
